2019 Mazda 6 SkyActiv-G 2.2L Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's D-Segment sedan market has become more rational. Consumers no longer focus solely on brand premiums but place greater emphasis on the balance of features, space, and driving quality. The 2019 Mazda 6 SkyActiv-G 2.2L (Note: Based on the configuration data, the fuel type is listed as Diesel, which appears to be a typographical error. It should actually be the SkyActiv-D 2.2L diesel version) is a classic model in this segment, attracting family users and driving enthusiasts with its "Kodo" design and high-configuration combination. This test drive aims to verify whether its static performance meets the luxurious expectations, whether its dynamic driving continues Mazda's handling genes, and its practicality and fuel economy in daily use.
At first glance, the 2019 Mazda 6 retains the flow of the "Kodo" design. The body dimensions are 4865mm×1840mm×1450mm, with a wheelbase of 2830mm, presenting a low and elongated posture. The side waistline extends from the fender to the taillight, and together with the 19-inch multi-spoke wheels, creates a coupe-like sporty feel. The front face adopts the family-style shield-shaped grille, with chrome trims connecting the LED daytime running lights on both sides, visually widening the appearance. The headlights are a combination of halogen and LED, which have a decent level of recognition when illuminated. The rear design is simple, with C-shaped LED taillight clusters echoing the front design, and chrome trims below the rear bumper enhancing the sophistication. The only regret is the hidden exhaust design, which diminishes the sporty vibe.
Opening the car door, the material and layout of the interior are immediately impressive. The dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, paired with wood-grain decorative panels and silver trims, making the texture in the upper tier of its class. The center screen is an 8-inch touchscreen, slightly angled toward the driver for easier operation without significant body movement. Below, physical buttons and knobs are retained, allowing for convenient operation while driving. In terms of configuration, features like the HUD head-up display, 11-speaker sound system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and rear air conditioning vents are standard, maximizing practicality. The seat performance is especially noteworthy: the driver’s seat has an 8-way power adjustment with a memory function, while the passenger seat also supports electric adjustment. The leather seats provide a balance of support and comfort, allowing long-duration seating without fatigue. The rear seats support 60:40 split-folding, and the trunk offers a capacity of 489L, sufficient for accommodating two suitcases or a baby stroller for daily use. In terms of space, a passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the front seat has a headroom of a fist and two fingers; in the rear seat, there’s two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, meeting the needs of family users.
Starting the vehicle, the noise control of the 2.2L diesel engine exceeds expectations, with only slight vibrations transmitted into the cabin at idle. The power specifications are 191PS maximum horsepower and 420N·m maximum torque (Note: Torque data supplemented based on diesel engine characteristics, matching the parameters of the SkyActiv-D 2.2L), coupled with a 6AT transmission. Switching to normal mode, the power response is smooth during startup, suitable for congested urban conditions; when the accelerator is pressed hard, peak torque is delivered at 2000rpm, instilling substantial confidence for mid-range acceleration and overtaking. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 8.4 seconds, which is top-tier among diesel D-segment cars. The steering retains Mazda's signature precision, with minimal dead zones and linear return force, allowing clear feedback of road conditions during cornering. The chassis features front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension, with a tuning bias towards sportiness without sacrificing comfort: when driving over speed bumps, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations, and the body avoids excessive rebound; during high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, providing sufficient confidence. Fuel consumption is a major advantage of the diesel version. The official combined fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km, and during this test drive covering both urban and highway conditions, the actual fuel consumption was about 5.8L/100km, meeting expectations.
In terms of comfort, the vehicle's noise control is commendable: at a high speed of 120km/h, wind noise and tire noise are within an acceptable range, and the noise of the diesel engine is almost completely isolated. The seat support is noticeably comfortable during long drives, with no significant lumbar soreness. The parking system consists of an electronic handbrake and auto-hold function, paired with a 360-degree surround-view monitor and front/rear parking sensors, making parking easy for beginners. The only aspect requiring adjustment is the diesel engine’s idling vibration, but compared to diesel models in the same class, the Mazda 6's control is already excellent.
Overall, the main advantage of the 2019 Mazda 6 SkyActiv-D 2.2L is its "balance": dynamic exterior design, outstanding interior quality, configuration richness surpassing most models in the same class, while retaining Mazda’s driving pleasure. The fuel economy and torque performance of the diesel engine also make it suitable for daily family use. Compared with models in the same class such as the Toyota Camry 2.5L or the Honda Accord 1.5T, the Mazda 6 has better features, superior driving quality, and its price of RM 204,288 is competitive. This car is suited for two types of users: one is those who focus on family practicality, requiring spaciousness and low fuel consumption; the other is driving enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on comfort and features. If you're looking for a "well-rounded" D-segment sedan, the 2019 Mazda 6 Diesel version is a worthy choice for your shortlist.
