In Malaysia's B-Segment market, finding a balance between affordability and basic features remains the core consideration for consumers when choosing a car—after all, most families need a "versatile car" that can handle daily commutes, weekend shopping, and occasionally carrying family and friends. The 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X (excluding A.S.A. 2.0), as a popular option in this segment, highlights its affordable price (RM 44,959) and standard basic smart features. This time, we experience the vehicle firsthand to see if it truly meets the core needs of an average family.

From the exterior, this Myvi continues the family’s signature rounded contours, with an overall design that leans youthful without being over the top. At the front, the large trapezoidal grille paired with chrome trim connects to sharp LED headlights on both sides, visually widening the stance; the car’s side profile features smooth lines, and while the 175/65 R15 tire size isn’t particularly large, it matches the body proportions well. The recessed design on the lower doors adds some visual layers. The rear design is relatively simple, with horizontally arranged LED taillights offering good recognition when lit, and the rear fog lights integrate well into the rear bumper, aligning with the practical positioning of a family car without unnecessary decorations.

Inside the cabin, the interior adopts a dark gray color scheme paired with silver trim highlights, offering above-average quality for its price range. The center console layout is straightforward, with an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle that operates smoothly and supports Bluetooth connection and basic multimedia functions. Below, physical buttons are concentrated in the air conditioning area, with rotary knobs for adjusting the digital aircon that offer moderate resistance, suitable for blind operation. The seats are covered in fabric, with manual adjustments for the front seats. The back and cushion provide decent support, ensuring no significant fatigue during long trips. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold configuration, which can expand the trunk space when folded flat. It’s sufficient for carrying items like strollers or large luggage for daily needs. As for space, the vehicle dimensions are 3895mm (length), 1735mm (width), 1515mm (height), with a wheelbase of 2500mm. A 175cm tall front passenger has a headroom of one fist’s height, while rear legroom allows for about two fists of space. While not particularly spacious, it is adequate for short trips accommodating 4-5 family members. The storage space is thoughtfully designed, with door panel slots fitting two bottles of water, and the central armrest box and glove compartment can store small everyday items. The front row also includes a USB port, convenient for charging mobile devices.

For performance, the 1.3L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 95PS (6000rpm) and maximum torque of 121N·m (4000rpm), paired with a 4AT gearbox. In actual driving, the power output during startup is smooth, with throttle response not being particularly sensitive, but the power gradually kicks in after pressing the accelerator down by one-third, making it completely suitable for urban commutes. For mid-to-high-speed overtaking, it requires stepping harder on the accelerator to trigger a downshift, and once the engine revs exceed 4000rpm, the power becomes more evident. On highways, cruising at 100km/h keeps the engine speed at approximately 2500rpm, with well-controlled noise levels. The suspension features a front MacPherson independent setup and a rear torsion beam non-independent configuration, tuned for comfort. It efficiently absorbs small bumps across speed bumps or uneven roads, although larger undulations can cause slight bounces in the rear seat. The steering wheel feels light, and its precision is average, but given the family car positioning, this setup is more suited for daily parking and low-speed driving. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel efficiency is 4.7L/100km. In real-world urban commutes (about 30% in congested traffic), the fuel consumption is around 5.5L, with highway fuel consumption about 4.2L. For a 1.3L family car, its fuel efficiency performance is outstanding.

In terms of safety configuration, this Myvi is equipped with 4 airbags (driver, passenger, front side airbags), ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and front/rear parking sensors. Although it does not come with a reversing camera, the sensitivity of the sensors is adequate, making daily parking manageable. However, it should be noted that it does not include the A.S.A.2.0 system, lacking advanced features like autonomous emergency braking and forward collision warning, which puts it behind the higher-end models in this aspect.

As for driving comfort, the seats have average wrapping but are soft, ensuring no significant discomfort during long journeys. The cabin noise is well-controlled, with minimal wind and tire noise below 60km/h in urban areas. At 100km/h on highways, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect normal conversation. The air conditioning cools quickly, the digital adjustment interface is intuitive, and although the rear row lacks standalone air vents, the front air conditioning provides sufficient airflow to cover the rear seats.

In summary, the core strength of the 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X lies in its "balance": budget-friendly price, decent fuel efficiency, adequate space, and basic safety features, fully capable of meeting the daily needs of an average family. Compared to its class equivalent Proton Iriz 1.3L, the Myvi offers better fuel economy and has more after-sales service outlets, making it more appealing to users who prioritize practicality and lower maintenance costs. However, its performance is just average, and it lacks a reversing camera and advanced active safety features. It is suitable for families with a limited budget, prioritizing "ease of driving, fuel efficiency, and maintenance convenience," especially for young people who have just started working or small families with two children.

If you need a reliable vehicle for commuting, without pursuing complex technological configurations, but simply want "hassle-free use and low maintenance costs," then this Myvi 1.3L X will be a pragmatic choice.

Pros
The powertrain is smooth and responsive, with a 1.3L naturally aspirated engine paired with an AT gearbox, providing sufficient power for city driving, highway climbing, and overtaking
Fuel economy performs excellently, matching the official data, with even lower consumption on highways, suitable for Malaysia's fuel prices
The interior is practical and well-equipped, featuring digital air conditioning, a touchscreen, keyless entry, and more for enhanced convenience
Cons
The exterior lacks distinctiveness, side lines are ordinary, and it is easily mistaken for other models.
The center console and door armrests are mostly made of hard plastic, resulting in a less pleasant touch and causing discomfort with prolonged use.
Some models lack the ASA 2.0 active safety system, missing advanced assistance features such as active braking.

As the owner of the 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X, after driving it for nearly two years, my daily commuting and weekend trips in Malaysia truly fit local needs perfectly! I give full marks for performance. The 1.3L naturally aspirated engine paired with the AT gearbox performs exceptionally smoothly during the stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur’s peak hours. The throttle response is quick enough — every time going uphill on the LDP highway or overtaking on the narrow roads in Klang Valley, the power feels responsive and never “sluggish.” Fuel consumption is accurately around the official 4.7L/100km; a bit higher during Kuala Lumpur city congestion, but it can go as low as 4.2L when driving on the highway to Penang, which is very friendly considering Malaysia’s fuel prices! I give 4 points for the exterior. It follows Perodua’s usual round and cute design style. The LED headlights and daytime running lights are particularly eye-catching during the day. However, the side profile is a bit ordinary. When parked in my neighborhood spot in Ipoh, people often ask me, "Is this a new Viva?" It lacks some distinctiveness but is overall pleasant to look at. The interior absolutely deserves full marks! Though it’s an entry-level version, the keyless entry, digital air conditioning, and touch screen are all very practical. During Kuala Lumpur’s hot summers, turning on the air conditioning remotely before getting in (even though it doesn’t have remote-start, the digital air conditioning adjusts temperature extremely quickly) is amazing. With the 60:40 foldable rear seats, it can fit three large bags of souvenirs I bought in Genting. The seat fabric is also stain-resistant — last time when I went to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah with my child, some juice spilled but it cleaned up easily without any worry. Overall, this Myvi is truly a “national favorite car” on Malaysian roads, offering unbeatable value for money!

Owner of 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X (Without A.S.A.2.0)
As the owner of the 2020 Myvi 1.3L X, having driven it for almost two years, the experience has been pretty good for daily commutes and weekend getaways in Malaysia! Let’s talk about performance first: I’d rate it 4 stars because it's really sufficient for city driving — during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour when traffic turns into a parking lot, the 1.3L naturally aspirated engine paired with the AT gearbox offers smooth starts and following traffic without any jerking. However, last time I took the whole family (three adults and two kids) to Genting Highlands, I could clearly feel the power struggling a bit while climbing uphill. Even with the throttle pressed deeper, the revs went up, but the speed increased slowly. After all, the displacement is limited, and we can’t demand too much from an everyday grocery car. For city driving, it’s indeed fuel-efficient. I usually get around 5L per 100km, slightly higher than the official 4.7L, but given the fluctuating fuel prices in Malaysia, this fuel consumption is still very reassuring. Now let’s talk about the interior — it’s a solid 5 stars! The first impression upon sitting in the car is "doesn’t feel like a car priced at just over 40,000 Ringgit" — the soft-touch materials on the dashboard, the silver trims, and the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s quite responsive. Even my mom, who isn’t very tech-savvy, quickly learned how to pair her Bluetooth and play songs. The most practical feature is the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. Last time, I helped a friend move small furniture, and after folding the seats down, I could fit two folding chairs easily. There’s also keyless entry and one-touch start, which is super convenient in Malaysia's hot and humid weather, as there’s no need to fumble for keys to unlock the door. The LED headlights are adequately bright at night, and the automatic headlights also turn on by themselves in tunnels, showing great attention to detail. All in all, this car is really suitable for family use on Malaysian roads. The performance is sufficient for everyday needs, the interior quality and features far exceed expectations, and the value for money is unbeatable!

As the owner of the 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X, having driven it for almost two years, the two points I’d like to talk about the most are safety and appearance. Let’s talk about the appearance first. The design of the Myvi is truly eye-catching on the streets of Malaysia! The rounded body lines paired with LED headlights, and the daytime running lights on during the day on the LDP highway, really turn heads. Especially the rear design, it’s more stylish than the old model. When parked at shopping mall parking lots in the Klang Valley, people often ask if this is the new Myvi. I give full marks for the appearance—no complaints! As for safety, I’d give it 4 points mainly because my model doesn’t come with the ASA 2.0 advanced safety system, but the basic features are still reliable. Last month, while reversing in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, the rear sensors timely alerted me, preventing me from grazing a motorcycle by the roadside. Last week, while driving on the North-South Expressway in heavy rain, the car in front suddenly braked, and the ABS and vehicle stability control responded quickly, preventing the car from skidding. However, it would feel even safer if it had automatic emergency braking since Malaysia has frequent rainy days and unexpected situations on the highway. Overall, the safety performance is considered good enough for daily commuting, but it lacks the extra reassurance of advanced assistance features.

As the owner of a 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I’d like to talk about two aspects: the interior and safety. Let’s talk about the interior first. I think giving it 4 points is pretty reasonable—it’s comfortable for daily use, but there’s still room for improvement in the details. For example, the plastic material of the center console feels hard, but it’s designed to be very practical: the air conditioning is digital and touch-controlled, so you don’t have to fumble for a knob when adjusting the temperature; it’s also convenient to operate while glancing down during a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur. The layout of the multi-function steering wheel buttons is very intuitive, making blind operations like changing tracks or adjusting the volume effortless. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split; last time, when helping a friend move some small furniture, I folded the back seat flat and fit in two folding chairs. This feature is especially practical in Malaysia, where we often “help out along the way.” However, if they could replace the material of the door panel armrests with something softer, it would be more comfortable for long drives without the arm feeling sore from leaning against it. Now, about safety—it absolutely deserves full marks! Everyone knows about the road conditions in Malaysia. Especially near my house on the smaller roads, where there are many motorcycles and pedestrians who love to cross suddenly, Myvi’s safety features give me real peace of mind. It’s equipped with 4 airbags as standard. Last time, I almost collided with a motorbike that suddenly changed lanes while I was driving in the outskirts of Penang. When I braked hard, the vehicle stability control system immediately engaged, keeping the car steady and stopping it without skidding. It also has front and rear sensors, which are super helpful when looking for those ridiculously narrow parking spaces in Kuala Lumpur’s city center. The beeping reminders are much more reliable than just using the rearview mirrors. Although my car doesn’t come with A.S.A.2.0, essential features like ABS and vehicle stability control are all present. On a recent rainy day driving on the North-South Expressway, even though the road was slippery, the car didn’t skid at all, making me feel incredibly safe. Overall, these two aspects live up to its price of over 40,000 MYR. As a daily commuter and family car, it’s really sufficient!

Owner of 2020 Perodua Myvi 1.3L X (Without A.S.A.2.0)
As the owner of a 2020 Myvi 1.3L X, I've been driving it for almost two years, mainly around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Let me talk about safety and performance first. For safety, I’ll give it 4 stars because the basic configuration is solid—ABS, vehicle stability control, and 4 airbags are all there. Last time on the LDP Highway, when the car in front suddenly braked hard, I slammed on the brakes, and the ABS kicked in promptly, preventing skidding and essentially saving the day. However, since I didn't opt for ASA 2.0, it lacks active braking and collision warnings. During heavy traffic in PJ, I have to stay fully focused while tailing other cars. Having active safety assists would’ve made it much more convenient, so I deducted one point. For performance, it's a full score! The 1.3L NA engine paired with the AT transmission suits Malaysia's road conditions perfectly. For daily commuting on the Federal Highway, the acceleration and overtaking are very smooth, especially in hilly areas like Subang Jaya. The hill-start assist is really reliable, preventing rollbacks on inclines. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the uphill roads pose no challenge at all. The transmission shifts smoothly, making it very comfortable to drive. The fuel consumption is also impressively low—around 5L even in city traffic. A full tank lasts quite a long time, which is absolutely wallet-friendly for working-class individuals. Overall, as a family car, I’m really satisfied with its performance in these two aspects!
