Nowadays, the variety in Malaysia's electric vehicle market is gradually increasing, but C-segment pure electric SUVs that balance range, features, and practicality are still rare. The 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric e-Max, as a popular player in this segment, boasts an official range of 484 km and comes standard with a range of intelligent safety and comfort features, making it highly competitive among vehicles in the same price range. This time, through an actual test drive, we focus on its daily driving performance, space practicality, and whether its features truly cater to the needs of local users.

In terms of exterior design, the Kona Electric e-Max retains the rugged lines of its fuel-powered counterpart but incorporates details unique to electric vehicles. The front features a closed grille, paired with sharp LED headlights and a continuous daytime running light, offering high recognition; the side body line extends from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 17-inch wheels, giving the overall posture a compact and dynamic look; the rear LED taillights also adopt a continuous design, echoing the front, while the diffuser-style design of the lower rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. The overall style is neither overly aggressive nor dull, reflecting the technological feel of electric vehicles, which aligns with the aesthetics of most family users.

Inside the car, the interior is dominated by dark tones, with the center console covered in soft materials and accented with silver trim, giving it a good texture. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display is positioned on top of the center console, operates smoothly, and supports the Sound Plus feature. The 6-speaker system satisfies daily music-listening needs; the fully digital instrument panel is clear and allows switching between different driving mode interfaces, while the HUD head-up display reduces the need to look down at the instruments while driving. The most noteworthy feature in terms of configuration is the seating: the front driver's seat supports 10-way electric adjustment, the passenger seat supports 8-way electric adjustment, and both are equipped with heating and ventilation functions. Even in Malaysia's hot weather, the seats can quickly reach a comfortable temperature. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, expanding the trunk space to easily accommodate baby carriages or suitcases for everyday use.

In terms of space performance, the car's length, width, and height are 4205mm/1800mm/1570mm, with a wheelbase of 2600mm. The front row offers ample space, providing around a fist's width of headroom for a 175cm passenger after seat adjustments; the rear row has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, and can accommodate three adults without feeling overly crowded. In terms of storage, the front central armrest box and door storage compartments have practical capacities, while the rear is equipped with air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, making it convenient for passengers to charge devices or use small appliances. The trunk has a regular capacity of 332L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats to accommodate larger items, meeting the storage needs for short family trips.

In terms of power, the Kona Electric e-Max is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor that delivers a maximum output of 204PS and a peak torque of 395N·m. The power response is immediate upon startup, providing a noticeable pushback sensation with a light press on the accelerator. Overtaking in city traffic or accelerating on highways is effortless. It offers three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, power output is more gradual, suitable for daily commuting; Sport mode unleashes full power, catering to users who enjoy a dynamic driving experience. The steering wheel provides moderate resistance and precise handling. The body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the front MacPherson independent suspension can absorb most minor bumps on urban roads, ensuring comfort for rear passengers.

In terms of range and charging, the 64kWh lithium battery pack has an official range of 484km. In actual testing, the range retention rate in city commuting (air conditioning set at 24°C) is about 85%, and about 75% during highway driving (at around 110km/h). It can basically meet the need for one charge per week. The energy consumption performance is average, with city electricity consumption being about 15kWh per 100km and highway about 18kWh per 100km. In terms of charging efficiency, using a home charging pile (7kW), it takes about 9 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. With a public fast charger, it can charge up to 80% in 30 minutes, suitable for emergency charging.

In terms of driving comfort, the Kona Electric e-Max offers commendable noise insulation performance. At speeds below 80km/h, both tire noise and wind noise are well controlled. The seats provide good wrapping and support, ensuring no fatigue even during long drives. The energy regeneration system supports three levels of adjustment. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator creates a noticeable drag, which is suitable for users familiar with driving electric vehicles. At the lowest level, the experience is similar to coasting in a fuel vehicle, allowing beginners to adapt quickly.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric e-Max lies in its balance: the range of 484km can meet the daily needs of most users. Rich safety features (6 airbags, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, etc.) and comfort features (heated and ventilated seats, HUD) are rarely seen in vehicles of the same price range. The space is also sufficient for family use. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the MG ZS EV or BYD Atto 3, it offers more comprehensive features and a better range.

This vehicle is suitable for families who prioritize practicality and features or young people looking for a car for daily commuting and short trips. If you want an electric SUV with sufficient range, rich features, and a smooth driving experience, the Kona Electric e-Max would be a good choice.

Pros
The wipers automatically work on rainy days, keeping the view clear
The tires have stable grip on mountain roads, providing strong uphill power without slipping
Practical safety features, lane departure warning, and active braking are effective
Cons
The design of the headlights is ordinary, the appearance is not stunning
Power drains quickly on mountain roads, and actual range deviates significantly from the stated range
The trunk space is insufficient, making it difficult to accommodate multiple large items

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. Suddenly, a downpour came pouring down. The wipers automatically went into overdrive, yet the visibility remained clear. When going uphill, the tire grip was very stable and did not slip. As for the exterior, the lines are quite sharp, but the design of the headlights is a bit ordinary, 4 out of 5 is a fair rating. Safety features get a 4 as well, since the lane departure warning helped correct my distraction twice in the rain, and the automatic braking stopped the car once at the foot of the mountain. The only downside is that the range dropped quickly in mountain roads, so charging needs to be planned in advance.

Yesterday, I drove it in heavy rain and went uphill. Just a slight push on the throttle, and it went up easily. The power is really awesome!

Last week, I took my wife and kids to a durian orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. On the way down, it was pouring rain, but the 204-hp motor pulled the 1.7-ton vehicle through corners without skidding. With 395 Nm of torque, climbing hills felt effortless—like stepping on clouds—but the battery drained faster than a durian peel! By the time we got to the foot of the mountain, the range was down to just 120 km. My wife complained that the trunk couldn't fit three boxes of durians. As I touched the ventilated and heated seats and looked at the HUD flashing the charging reminder, I thought: this 484 km range on rainy mountain roads is just a "fairy tale number." But when I used the paddle shifters on the steering wheel to control energy regeneration, I felt that this 4 points for performance and 4 points for the interior were worth the price.

Every day commuting in the Kona EV, it accelerates smoothly during traffic jams, overtakes without waiting for revs, and is always the first to dash off at green lights. The ventilated seats are lifesavers after being exposed to the sun, and the rear seats comfortably fit three colleagues. The exterior may not be super eye-catching, but the car is hassle-free to drive, and that's good enough!
