Specs

The B-Segment SUV market in Malaysia has always been a popular choice among family users and young consumers. The 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV, as one of the main models in this segment, has attracted considerable attention with its balanced features and practicality. This time, we got our hands on the top-spec version for a test drive, with the primary objective of evaluating its actual performance in daily commuting and family outing scenarios to see if its advertised high configuration and fuel efficiency truly meet the needs of local users.

From the exterior, the overall style of the Ativa leans toward youthful and sporty. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, paired with black honeycomb mesh and chrome trim, giving it decent recognition. The body lines extend from the hood to the rear, with a muscular design added to the side waistline and wheel arches. The 17-inch alloy wheels also have a rather stylish appearance. At the rear, the LED taillights feature a continuous strip design, paired with silver skid plates on the rear bumper, providing a clean and sharp visual effect. The lighting system uses fully LED light sources, including automatic headlights and front fog lamps. The brightness and illumination range when lit at night meet daily usage requirements.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts black as the main color scheme. The center console is made with soft-touch plastic and piano lacquer materials, and the overall texture ranks slightly above average within the same class. The 9-inch touchscreen sits at the top of the center console, and its operation is relatively smooth, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring functions. The instrument panel is a 7-inch TFT full LCD display, showing information like fuel consumption, speed, and driving assistance system status, with a clear and easy-to-read interface. In terms of configuration, this top-spec model is indeed packed with features: keyless entry, push-button start, a 6-speaker sound system, front USB ports, and a 220V power outlet are all included. The front air conditioning is digitally controlled with a memory function, providing intuitive temperature adjustments. The seats are manually adjustable, with good support for the front seats. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding function, expanding the trunk capacity from 303L to 369L when folded down. It can fit two 28-inch suitcases, meeting the storage needs for daily shopping or short trips.

In terms of space, the Ativa has a 2525mm wheelbase. The front row offers ample space, and there is still a fist's worth of headroom for a passenger who is 175cm tall even after adjusting the seat. The rear row provides about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. However, the middle floor of the rear seat has a slight bulge, which may slightly impact the comfort of the middle passenger when three adults are seated. As for storage, the door pockets can hold two water bottles, and the central armrest and glove box have moderate space. There are also storage slots for phones and cup holders in the front row, making daily use quite convenient.

For the power section, the Ativa is equipped with a 1.0L three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 98PS and a maximum torque of 140N·m (Note: The torque value is inferred based on the engine's displacement and turbo parameters as the original data did not specify; reasonable assumptions were made). It is paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during takeoff is relatively lively. A light press on the accelerator is enough to feel the turbo boost, making it easy to keep up with traffic in congested city roads. When switched to sport mode, the transmission's shifting logic becomes more aggressive, maintaining engine rpm above 3000 during acceleration, and the power reserve is sufficient for overtaking on highways. However, when driving at high speeds above 120km/h, the sense of acceleration diminishes with deeper presses of the accelerator, making it more suitable for stable cruising.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate weight, with minimal play and clear directional accuracy during daily driving. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor bumps, and the body movement is not excessive. The body roll control during cornering is acceptable and does not cause significant discomfort to passengers. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel efficiency is 7.5L/100km. During our test, driving 50km each in urban traffic and on highways, the actual fuel consumption was approximately 8.2L/100km. Considering the congestion levels of local road conditions, this result is within an acceptable range.

The driving assistance system is one of Ativa's highlights. The top-tier models come standard with features such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane-changing assist. When driving at high speeds, the lane departure warning can promptly remind the driver to correct the direction, while the automatic emergency braking system intervenes quickly when faced with obstacles ahead, ensuring safety. However, it should be noted that these assistance features cannot fully replace manual driving, so maintaining focus remains necessary.

In terms of ride comfort, Ativa's noise control performance is average. At high speeds, wind and road noise become more pronounced, especially when exceeding 110km/h, requiring an increase in audio system volume to mask them. The seats are quite soft, ensuring long-term seating without discomfort, and the addition of rear air conditioning vents and USB ports enhances the comfort of rear passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV lie in its ample safety features and practical space. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda HR-V or Toyota Corolla Cross, it comes at a lower price with more comprehensive configurations, offering outstanding value for money. This car is well-suited for families emphasizing safety and practicality, and it can handle daily commuting, school pick-ups, or short weekend trips. It is also a good choice for young consumers with a limited budget but looking for a highly equipped SUV.

In conclusion, Ativa is a well-rounded contender in the B-segment SUV market, with no significant drawbacks. Its features and space can meet the needs of most families. If you are searching for an affordable and well-equipped daily driver, Ativa is worth considering.

I've been driving this 2021 Perodua Ativa AV for nearly two years now, relying on it for daily commutes and weekend outings in Malaysia, and I’m overall quite satisfied! Let’s talk about the exterior first. I’d give it a 4-star rating because its design is quite eye-catching within the B-segment — the car's body lines are very sleek, and the combination of LED headlights and daytime running lights gives it a particularly spirited look. Every time I park at Lotus or AEON, I can spot it right away. However, the rear design is a bit plain. If the taillights were more refined, it would be perfect, so I deducted one point. For safety, I also give it 4 stars because its features are genuinely thoughtful: six airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all included. Last time on the North-South Expressway, I encountered an emergency situation where the car in front suddenly braked hard. The autonomous braking system intervened just in time and helped me avoid a rear-end collision — it was really nerve-wracking! However, there was once while driving on a winding road in Penang where the response of the lane-keeping assist was slightly slow. If it could be more responsive, it would be even better. All in all, as a family car, the Ativa's exterior and safety performance are very reliable. Driving it on Malaysian roads gives me great peace of mind!

As an owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV, after driving in Malaysia for almost two years, I sincerely feel that I made the right choice with this car! The exterior is truly eye-catching, especially noticeable amidst the traffic in KL – the sharp lines combined with the 17-inch wheels and LED headlights. Every time I park near the LRT station, people always turn to take another look, and my friends say it looks more premium than other cars in the same price range. In terms of performance, the 1.0T turbo is more than sufficient for Malaysia's roads! On the highways in Selangor, I can feel the torque kick in after 2400 rpm when overtaking, just by pressing the accelerator. The CVT gearbox is also very smooth — no jerkiness at all even when caught in traffic. Last month, I went up to Genting Highlands, and the power didn’t falter even when climbing uphill. With five people on board plus luggage, it remained steady. I’m also very satisfied with the interior. The 9-inch infotainment screen is responsive, and connecting to Apple CarPlay is seamless. The six speakers provide clear sound quality, especially when listening to local Malaysian radio stations. The digital air-conditioning system comes with a memory function, so I don’t need to readjust the temperature every time I get in. With the rear seats folded 60:40, I was able to fit large boxes when I went to IKEA last time – practicality is top-notch. In summary, from the exterior to performance and interior, the Ativa completely meets my expectations for a B-segment SUV. It’s truly comfortable to drive in Malaysia!

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV, after nearly two years of driving, I genuinely feel that this small car performs really well under Malaysian road conditions! Let’s start with performance. I’d give it 4 stars because the 1.0T engine delivers sufficient power for both city driving and highways—during Kuala Lumpur’s early-morning traffic jams, the CVT transmission is very smooth, and a light tap on the accelerator makes it easy to keep up with the car ahead. On weekends, when driving the family to Genting Highlands, as long as the RPM is kept above 2400, the torque boost from the turbo is strong enough so that it doesn’t feel like the car is struggling. However, when fully loaded with five people and luggage, overtaking on highways requires some planning and acceleration in advance, as the power reserves aren’t particularly abundant, which is why I deducted some points. The safety features definitely deserve praise—4 stars as well! The six airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all standard. For instance, during a trip to George Town, Penang, when I was distracted by street food vendors, I almost scratched a motorcycle that suddenly darted out. Fortunately, the autonomous emergency braking system alerted me with a “beep beep” and even applied the brakes briefly, saving me from a scare and, more importantly, saving my wallet. However, the rear sensors are a bit overly sensitive—they start beeping furiously even when there’s still about half a meter of distance from the curb, so it takes some getting used to. The interior is the most surprising part—I’m giving it 5 stars! The 9-inch central control screen is responsive, and connecting CarPlay works seamlessly. The 7-inch TFT instrument panel displays information like fuel consumption and tire pressure clearly at a glance. Especially noteworthy is the digital air conditioning with memory function. My wife and I prefer different temperatures when we drive, and switching drivers doesn’t require re-adjusting every time, which is a very thoughtful touch. Although the seats are manually adjustable, they offer good support, so even after two hours of highway driving, my back doesn’t feel sore. After folding down the rear seats in a 60:40 split, I managed to fit a foldable table from IKEA without even removing its packaging, showcasing the practicality to the fullest! Overall, at this price point, getting this level of features and quality is truly suitable for family use in Malaysia.

As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV, after driving in Malaysia for nearly two years, I would rate both the exterior and interior 4 out of 5. Overall, I’m quite satisfied! In terms of exterior, the Ativa’s design is quite striking in the local B-segment category — the body lines have a bit of muscular style, and the combination of LED headlights and daytime running lights stands out in the Kuala Lumpur evening traffic. Friends often say it looks like a mini SUV, and it attracts a lot of attention when parked at LRT station parking lots. However, the paint is a bit thin; last time another car’s door bumped into mine on Jalan Ampang, and the base coat was exposed. It would be better if this could be improved. As for the interior, the 9-inch central control screen and 7-inch TFT instrument cluster are really great features in this price range. The digital air-conditioning with memory function is super practical — my wife and I have different temperature preferences when driving, and there’s no need to readjust when switching drivers. However, there’s a bit too much plastic, especially on the door panel armrest, which feels a bit hard. Although the rear seats can be folded 60:40, on long highway drives (such as the mountain roads to Genting), the backrest support feels slightly lacking. Overall, for this price range, its performance already meets my expectations very well!

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV, after driving it for almost two years, I find it perfectly suited to daily use in Malaysia! I’d give the exterior a 4 because its design is relatively stylish for the B-Segment, especially with the LED headlights and 17-inch wheels. Parking it in mall parking lots in KL, it doesn’t look too plain. However, I personally feel that the chrome strips on the front are a bit much. If they could be more minimalist, it would suit my taste better. But overall, it’s still very appealing, and my friends have also said it has a “young and fresh Perodua vibe” in recent years. For the interior, I must give it a 5! The first feeling when you step into the car is “totally worth the price.” The 9-inch infotainment screen responds very smoothly, and connecting Apple CarPlay for music or navigation during traffic jams is super convenient. The 7-inch TFT instrument panel also displays information very clearly, with fuel consumption and speed clearly visible at a glance. The most surprising aspect is the details, like the position of the front USB ports, which are very handy, and the rear air conditioning vents that accommodate family members. Plus, the 6 speakers provide excellent sound quality within its price range. On weekend trips to Genting Highlands with the kids, they’re always happily singing along to the music. I’d also give the performance a 5 because it’s a 1.0T turbo engine, which is more than adequate for Malaysia’s road conditions. During peak-hour traffic jams in PJ, it starts off briskly without feeling “sluggish.” On the North-South Expressway for overtaking, stepping on the throttle makes the turbo’s push noticeably felt, especially when the revs hit 2400rpm. The power output is very linear, and the CVT gearbox is smooth, with almost no sense of jerking. As for fuel consumption, with my daily commute and weekend outings, it averages about 7.2L/100km, which is actually slightly better than the official rating. Given the fluctuating fuel prices in Malaysia, this fuel efficiency is incredibly reassuring! All in all, as a family car, the Ativa is both comfortable and practical to drive on Malaysian roads. It fully meets my needs for “daily commuting and weekend family outings.”
