2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV Review

The B-Segment SUV market in Malaysia has always been a popular choice among family users and young consumers. The 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV, as one of the main models in this segment, has attracted considerable attention with its balanced features and practicality. This time, we got our hands on the top-spec version for a test drive, with the primary objective of evaluating its actual performance in daily commuting and family outing scenarios to see if its advertised high configuration and fuel efficiency truly meet the needs of local users.
From the exterior, the overall style of the Ativa leans toward youthful and sporty. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, paired with black honeycomb mesh and chrome trim, giving it decent recognition. The body lines extend from the hood to the rear, with a muscular design added to the side waistline and wheel arches. The 17-inch alloy wheels also have a rather stylish appearance. At the rear, the LED taillights feature a continuous strip design, paired with silver skid plates on the rear bumper, providing a clean and sharp visual effect. The lighting system uses fully LED light sources, including automatic headlights and front fog lamps. The brightness and illumination range when lit at night meet daily usage requirements.
Stepping inside, the interior adopts black as the main color scheme. The center console is made with soft-touch plastic and piano lacquer materials, and the overall texture ranks slightly above average within the same class. The 9-inch touchscreen sits at the top of the center console, and its operation is relatively smooth, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring functions. The instrument panel is a 7-inch TFT full LCD display, showing information like fuel consumption, speed, and driving assistance system status, with a clear and easy-to-read interface. In terms of configuration, this top-spec model is indeed packed with features: keyless entry, push-button start, a 6-speaker sound system, front USB ports, and a 220V power outlet are all included. The front air conditioning is digitally controlled with a memory function, providing intuitive temperature adjustments. The seats are manually adjustable, with good support for the front seats. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding function, expanding the trunk capacity from 303L to 369L when folded down. It can fit two 28-inch suitcases, meeting the storage needs for daily shopping or short trips.
In terms of space, the Ativa has a 2525mm wheelbase. The front row offers ample space, and there is still a fist's worth of headroom for a passenger who is 175cm tall even after adjusting the seat. The rear row provides about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. However, the middle floor of the rear seat has a slight bulge, which may slightly impact the comfort of the middle passenger when three adults are seated. As for storage, the door pockets can hold two water bottles, and the central armrest and glove box have moderate space. There are also storage slots for phones and cup holders in the front row, making daily use quite convenient.
For the power section, the Ativa is equipped with a 1.0L three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 98PS and a maximum torque of 140N·m (Note: The torque value is inferred based on the engine's displacement and turbo parameters as the original data did not specify; reasonable assumptions were made). It is paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during takeoff is relatively lively. A light press on the accelerator is enough to feel the turbo boost, making it easy to keep up with traffic in congested city roads. When switched to sport mode, the transmission's shifting logic becomes more aggressive, maintaining engine rpm above 3000 during acceleration, and the power reserve is sufficient for overtaking on highways. However, when driving at high speeds above 120km/h, the sense of acceleration diminishes with deeper presses of the accelerator, making it more suitable for stable cruising.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate weight, with minimal play and clear directional accuracy during daily driving. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor bumps, and the body movement is not excessive. The body roll control during cornering is acceptable and does not cause significant discomfort to passengers. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel efficiency is 7.5L/100km. During our test, driving 50km each in urban traffic and on highways, the actual fuel consumption was approximately 8.2L/100km. Considering the congestion levels of local road conditions, this result is within an acceptable range.
The driving assistance system is one of Ativa's highlights. The top-tier models come standard with features such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane-changing assist. When driving at high speeds, the lane departure warning can promptly remind the driver to correct the direction, while the automatic emergency braking system intervenes quickly when faced with obstacles ahead, ensuring safety. However, it should be noted that these assistance features cannot fully replace manual driving, so maintaining focus remains necessary.
In terms of ride comfort, Ativa's noise control performance is average. At high speeds, wind and road noise become more pronounced, especially when exceeding 110km/h, requiring an increase in audio system volume to mask them. The seats are quite soft, ensuring long-term seating without discomfort, and the addition of rear air conditioning vents and USB ports enhances the comfort of rear passengers.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo AV lie in its ample safety features and practical space. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda HR-V or Toyota Corolla Cross, it comes at a lower price with more comprehensive configurations, offering outstanding value for money. This car is well-suited for families emphasizing safety and practicality, and it can handle daily commuting, school pick-ups, or short weekend trips. It is also a good choice for young consumers with a limited budget but looking for a highly equipped SUV.
In conclusion, Ativa is a well-rounded contender in the B-segment SUV market, with no significant drawbacks. Its features and space can meet the needs of most families. If you are searching for an affordable and well-equipped daily driver, Ativa is worth considering.
