2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) Review

In Malaysia's D-segment MPV market, practical multi-passenger experience and balanced features have always been core requirements for family users. As a popular model in this segment, the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) version enters the market with mainstream safety configurations such as 7 airbags and a 360-degree parking view, as well as an 8-seater layout. This test drive will focus on evaluating whether its space utility, powertrain compatibility, and daily driving performance meet the expectations of family users.
The exterior of the 2021 Innova 2.0 G continues the rugged MPV silhouette, with a front face adopting Toyota's family design language. The upper grille is connected to the front headlights via chrome trim, while the trapezoidal lower grille is made of black plastic and paired with a silver front skid plate, adding a touch of off-road charm. The side profile features straight lines with a waistline running from the A-pillar to the rear, passing through the front and rear door handles. The 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with 205/65 R16 tires balance comfort and practicality. At the rear, the taillights are connected by a chrome trim, and the lower section features a concealed exhaust layout. The overall boxy design aligns with the practical positioning of MPVs and stands out in its class for recognizability.
When the door is opened, the interior adopts a black theme. The dashboard has a symmetrical design, covered with soft plastic materials on the upper part and accented with silver trim in the middle. The overall texture is mediocre within its price range. The dashboard is equipped with a 9-inch touch screen that supports Bluetooth connectivity and offers decent operating smoothness. The driver’s seat is equipped with an 8-way power adjustment, the front passenger seat with manual adjustment, and the second-row seats also support manual adjustment. The third-row seats can be split 50:50 and folded for flexible storage space expansion. In terms of features, keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, and air-conditioning vents for both the front and rear are all standard configurations, meeting daily usage needs.
In terms of body size, the length, width, and height are 4735mm, 1830mm, and 1795mm, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2750mm, accommodating an 8-seater layout. Based on real seating experience, a passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the front row would have a headroom of about one fist and two fingers. When the second row is adjusted to a suitable position, there is about two fists' worth of legroom and one fist of headroom. When the third row seats two adult passengers, legroom is slightly tight but sufficient for short trips. Regarding storage space, there are compartments beneath the dashboard and on the door panels. The trunk can accommodate two 20-inch suitcases with the third row of seats up, and storage capacity significantly increases when the seats are folded down.
The powertrain is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 139PS (5600rpm) and a maximum torque of 183N·m (4000rpm). It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and features rear-wheel drive. During daily driving, the acceleration is relatively gentle at start, and the power output is linear when the accelerator is pressed, meeting urban commuting needs. At highway speeds, when the engine revs exceed 3000rpm, power improves, but overtaking requires pressing the accelerator harder in advance. The transmission shifts smoothly with almost no noticeable jerks, fitting the positioning of a family car.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate turning resistance and acceptable directional accuracy, making everyday driving agile. The suspension system includes a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear rigid axle type non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension absorbs most vibrations, providing rear passengers with a smooth ride without significant jolts. However, during sharp turns at high speeds, the body leans noticeably, requiring speed control. As for noise cancellation, the cabin remains relatively quiet within 60km/h. When the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind and road noise become increasingly noticeable but still stay within acceptable limits.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.1L/100km. During actual test drives, city road fuel consumption is about 10-11L/100km, while highway fuel consumption is 8-9L/100km. Overall, the performance meets the expectations for a 2.0L MPV. In terms of safety features, 7 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, forward collision warning, and 360-degree parking cameras are all standard, making the safety performance stand out among vehicles in the same class.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) lie in its practical 8-seater space, comprehensive safety features, and reliable powertrain. Compared to vehicles in the same class, its safety configuration is outstanding, and its price (RM 133,880) is relatively competitive. However, the compact third-row space and average high-speed noise control are its drawbacks. This car is suitable for family users who prioritize space practicality, safety features, and brand reliability, especially for consumers who frequently need to transport multiple passengers.
Overall, the Innova 2.0 G (AT) is a well-balanced family MPV. Although it doesn't particularly stand out in terms of power and handling, its practical space and reliable performance are sufficient to meet the core needs of family users, making it a worthy consideration in its class.
