Specs

In Malaysia's D-segment MPV market, practical multi-passenger experience and balanced features have always been core requirements for family users. As a popular model in this segment, the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) version enters the market with mainstream safety configurations such as 7 airbags and a 360-degree parking view, as well as an 8-seater layout. This test drive will focus on evaluating whether its space utility, powertrain compatibility, and daily driving performance meet the expectations of family users.

The exterior of the 2021 Innova 2.0 G continues the rugged MPV silhouette, with a front face adopting Toyota's family design language. The upper grille is connected to the front headlights via chrome trim, while the trapezoidal lower grille is made of black plastic and paired with a silver front skid plate, adding a touch of off-road charm. The side profile features straight lines with a waistline running from the A-pillar to the rear, passing through the front and rear door handles. The 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with 205/65 R16 tires balance comfort and practicality. At the rear, the taillights are connected by a chrome trim, and the lower section features a concealed exhaust layout. The overall boxy design aligns with the practical positioning of MPVs and stands out in its class for recognizability.

When the door is opened, the interior adopts a black theme. The dashboard has a symmetrical design, covered with soft plastic materials on the upper part and accented with silver trim in the middle. The overall texture is mediocre within its price range. The dashboard is equipped with a 9-inch touch screen that supports Bluetooth connectivity and offers decent operating smoothness. The driver’s seat is equipped with an 8-way power adjustment, the front passenger seat with manual adjustment, and the second-row seats also support manual adjustment. The third-row seats can be split 50:50 and folded for flexible storage space expansion. In terms of features, keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, and air-conditioning vents for both the front and rear are all standard configurations, meeting daily usage needs.

In terms of body size, the length, width, and height are 4735mm, 1830mm, and 1795mm, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2750mm, accommodating an 8-seater layout. Based on real seating experience, a passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the front row would have a headroom of about one fist and two fingers. When the second row is adjusted to a suitable position, there is about two fists' worth of legroom and one fist of headroom. When the third row seats two adult passengers, legroom is slightly tight but sufficient for short trips. Regarding storage space, there are compartments beneath the dashboard and on the door panels. The trunk can accommodate two 20-inch suitcases with the third row of seats up, and storage capacity significantly increases when the seats are folded down.

The powertrain is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 139PS (5600rpm) and a maximum torque of 183N·m (4000rpm). It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and features rear-wheel drive. During daily driving, the acceleration is relatively gentle at start, and the power output is linear when the accelerator is pressed, meeting urban commuting needs. At highway speeds, when the engine revs exceed 3000rpm, power improves, but overtaking requires pressing the accelerator harder in advance. The transmission shifts smoothly with almost no noticeable jerks, fitting the positioning of a family car.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate turning resistance and acceptable directional accuracy, making everyday driving agile. The suspension system includes a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear rigid axle type non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension absorbs most vibrations, providing rear passengers with a smooth ride without significant jolts. However, during sharp turns at high speeds, the body leans noticeably, requiring speed control. As for noise cancellation, the cabin remains relatively quiet within 60km/h. When the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind and road noise become increasingly noticeable but still stay within acceptable limits.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.1L/100km. During actual test drives, city road fuel consumption is about 10-11L/100km, while highway fuel consumption is 8-9L/100km. Overall, the performance meets the expectations for a 2.0L MPV. In terms of safety features, 7 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, forward collision warning, and 360-degree parking cameras are all standard, making the safety performance stand out among vehicles in the same class.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) lie in its practical 8-seater space, comprehensive safety features, and reliable powertrain. Compared to vehicles in the same class, its safety configuration is outstanding, and its price (RM 133,880) is relatively competitive. However, the compact third-row space and average high-speed noise control are its drawbacks. This car is suitable for family users who prioritize space practicality, safety features, and brand reliability, especially for consumers who frequently need to transport multiple passengers.

Overall, the Innova 2.0 G (AT) is a well-balanced family MPV. Although it doesn't particularly stand out in terms of power and handling, its practical space and reliable performance are sufficient to meet the core needs of family users, making it a worthy consideration in its class.

Pros
The design is atmospheric and stable, with sharp body lines and LED daytime running lights enhancing recognition, attracting attention from others.
Spacious 8-seater practicality, suitable for family vacations or transporting colleagues, with the third row providing enough space for comfort.
Practical safety features, including forward collision warning, vehicle stability control, 7 airbags, etc., ensuring driving safety.
Cons
The interior features a lot of plastic parts; areas such as the front passenger side and the lower center console have hard plastics that may generate noise when rubbed, with an overall average texture.
When fully loaded with 8 people or climbing slopes, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine lacks sufficient power and requires deep pressing of the accelerator.
The rear design is ordinary; the taillights are not particularly refined, and the overall exterior is not very eye-catching.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT)
As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, the thing I want to praise the most is its exterior! Every time I park it in front of a Lotus supermarket or on the way to Genting Highlands, people keep asking if it’s the new model — the body lines are sharper than the older model, and the LED daytime running lights look particularly spirited when lit. The 8-seater spacious cabin combined with the stable body proportions makes it feel impressive whether it’s taking the family on a vacation to the East Coast or driving colleagues to Klang for seafood on the weekend. I’d give its appearance a perfect score of 5 without any hesitation! As for the interior, I’m overall quite satisfied. After all, it’s a family car, and the build quality is relatively solid. The 9-inch touchscreen on the center console is convenient to use, and the air conditioning knobs are large enough — for someone like me who often drives with gloves on, it’s no problem to operate them blindly. However, there is indeed quite a lot of plastic, especially the hard plastic panel in front of the passenger seat. Sometimes, it makes noises when things are placed on it, so it would be great if it were replaced with softer material. A score of 4 is just right for this aspect. The safety features are really practical for driving in Malaysia’s road conditions! Once, near KLCC, I was stuck in traffic, and the car in front braked suddenly. My car immediately activated the forward collision warning, helping me avoid a rear-end collision. Another time, I was driving to Penang, and the car slightly skidded on the highway in the rain. The vehicle stability control system kicked in right away, keeping the steering steady. With 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera, whether I’m parking on the complex one-way streets of Kuala Lumpur or driving the whole family on mountain roads, I always feel reassured. The only slight regret is the lack of automatic parking, but for experienced drivers, it’s not a big issue. A score of 4 feels very reasonable!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) and having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, what I appreciate the most is its interior! The 8-seater layout is incredibly family-friendly. For our big family, it's perfect for weekend trips to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands. The third row comfortably seats two adults without feeling cramped, and the rear air vents work great. Even in Kuala Lumpur's 35°C weather, the rear seats stay cool and comfortable. The 9-inch touchscreen in the center console is quite responsive, and using CarPlay for navigation to find food spots in Petaling Street is very convenient. The buttons on the steering wheel for adjusting volume and skipping tracks are also easy to use. The most pleasant surprise is the material quality of the interior — even areas exposed to the sun frequently show minimal wear and tear. It's very well-built, and I would rate it a full 5 out of 5! As for the performance, I’d rate it a 4 out of 5. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine drives smoothly in city areas and is adequate for handling traffic on the LDP highway. However, when the car is fully loaded with 8 passengers and climbing uphill roads in Genting, I do need to press down harder on the accelerator as the power comes a bit slowly. That said, it's sufficient for daily commutes or grocery runs with the family. After all, an MPV isn't meant for racing, so I'm quite satisfied with its performance!

Owner of 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT)
As a car owner who has lived in Kuala Lumpur for almost ten years, this 2021 Innova 2.0 G AT is truly perfect for Malaysian families! Talking about the interior first, I think giving it a 4 is just right — the 8-seater layout is incredibly friendly for families like ours, which often includes parents and three children. Even with two adults sitting in the third row on a trip to Johor Bahru, it doesn't feel cramped. The rear air conditioning is an absolute lifesaver in a tropical climate, and the kids sitting in the back no longer complain about being too hot. However, the plastic texture does feel a bit too strong, especially the hard plastic piece below the center console, which feels less premium to the touch. It would be perfect if there were more soft padding. As for performance, giving it a 4 is also reasonable. In city traffic, the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine doesn't feel too aggressive on takeoff, but its rear-wheel-drive performs very steadily on hilly roads like those in Subang Jaya. The transmission shifts smoothly without any jerks. On the North-South Expressway, cruising at 120km/h is effortless, with a fuel consumption of roughly 9.5L, which is slightly higher than the official 9.1L. But considering Malaysia's hot weather and full load conditions, this performance is acceptable. What reassures me the most is the safety, which absolutely deserves a 5! Last month in Penang, I almost got sideswiped by a truck that suddenly changed lanes. The front collision warning immediately sounded, and I was able to step on the brakes in time to avoid the accident. With 7 airbags and vehicle stability control, these features provide great stability while driving on the highway in heavy rain. And the 360-degree camera is a lifesaver in Kuala Lumpur's narrow parking lots, making it much easier to reverse without worrying about scratching nearby motorcycles. All in all, this car is extremely practical for use in Malaysia. With its complete safety features, it's more than sufficient for family use!

Owner of 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT)
As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT), my experience using it in Malaysia has been quite satisfactory. In terms of safety, the 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, and forward collision warning are very practical, especially on the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur. The 360-degree parking camera makes it easy for me to handle narrow parking spaces. Giving it 4 points is very reasonable. In terms of appearance, the design of this car is grand and steady. The LED daytime running lights and chrome trim enhance its texture, making it very suitable as a family car. Although not particularly stunning, it is highly aesthetically pleasing and meets my sense of style. Giving it 4 points is no problem. In terms of performance, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine is sufficient for city commuting, and the AT transmission shifts smoothly. However, when climbing hills or fully loaded with 8 people, the power can feel slightly inadequate, especially on the long slopes of the East Coast Highway where advance acceleration is required. The rear-wheel drive configuration performs well in terms of stability on wet roads. Overall, I’d rate it 4 points. Overall, this car performs well under Malaysian road conditions and is suitable for family use.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT)
As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Innova 2.0 G (AT) for nearly two years in Malaysia, let me talk about the exterior first. The overall design is quite steady and not overly flashy like some MPVs. The chrome trim on the front and the LED daytime running lights make the car quite recognizable in Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic. However, the rear design is somewhat ordinary; it would be better if the taillights were more refined. I’d rate it 4 out of 5—satisfactory overall but not stunning. As for the interior, the 8-seat layout is very practical for families like ours, as we often drive relatives and friends to places like Genting Highlands or Penang for road trips. The 9-inch touchscreen on the center console responds fairly smoothly, and the physical buttons for air conditioning controls are convenient for blind operation. This feature is particularly useful in Malacca’s hot weather—you don’t need to look down to adjust the temperature. However, there is a noticeable plastic feel in the interior, especially on the door panels and the lower part of the center console; the texture feels ordinary. On the other hand, the rear air conditioning vents and USB ports are quite thoughtful, so even those sitting in the third row on long trips won’t feel stuffy. Overall, I’d give it 4 out of 5 points—functional enough but with room for improvement in terms of detail and texture.
