In Malaysia's B-Segment market, hatchbacks with a 1.5L engine have always been a popular choice for families and young professionals. These cars need to meet the economical demands of daily commuting while also being practical enough for occasional family outings. The 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J is a popular contender in this segment, boasting standout features such as 7 standard airbags, keyless entry, and Toyota's renowned reliability. In this test drive, we focus on its static performance, driving experience, and everyday practicality to see if it truly deserves the title of the "value-for-money benchmark" in its class.

From the exterior, the Yaris 1.5J adopts a youthful and sporty design. The front features a large lower grille, paired with fog lights on both sides, giving it a distinctive appearance. The streamlined side profile and waistline extending from the front fender to the rear end make the car look sleeker. The 15-inch tires, although not very large, are well-proportioned to the body and don’t appear undersized. At the rear, the LED taillights stand out with their horizontal light band design, making the car easily recognizable at night. Additionally, standard features like automatic headlights and power-folding side mirrors enhance daily usability.

Inside, the Yaris 1.5J focuses on practicality with its interior layout. The dashboard is made of hard plastic material, with a moderate feel to the touch, but the joints are well-aligned, reflecting the quality expected at this price point. The standard single-zone automatic air conditioning is easy to operate, with knobs and buttons offering clear resistance for effortless operation while driving. The multifunction steering wheel supports volume adjustment and phone calls, with well-laid-out buttons and a comfortable grip. The instrument cluster uses backlit analog dials; while it doesn't offer a fully digital display, the information shown is direct and easy to read, with the RPM, speed, and fuel level all clearly visible. The seats are manually adjustable and made of fabric material, providing decent support and being comfortable enough for extended periods. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, allowing the trunk space to expand, which is adequate for storing strollers or suitcases. Notably, the car also comes with a 220V power outlet, which is particularly user-friendly for those who need to use external devices.

In terms of space, the Yaris 1.5J has a wheelbase of 2550mm, which is average in its class. The front row offers ample space, with a 175cm tall passenger having about one fist of headroom and legroom. The rear row provides similar average room; a passenger of the same height would have around two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. While not particularly spacious, it adequately meets the needs of everyday family use. For storage, the door pockets can fit two 500ml water bottles, and the central armrest box and glove box provide enough room for small items. The regular trunk capacity is 286L, and folding down the rear seats expands it further, making it suitable for short trips with luggage.

In terms of performance, the Yaris 1.5J is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine that produces a maximum of 107PS and reaches its peak torque at 4200rpm. Paired with a CVT transmission, the power delivery is smooth and linear during daily driving. The vehicle feels sufficiently responsive in the initial acceleration phase, and since the transmission is quite seamless, there’s nearly no jerkiness during acceleration. Switching to sport mode sharpens the throttle response, and pressing the accelerator aggressively in this mode quickly raises the engine's RPM and delivers more immediate power, allowing it to meet the demands of urban overtaking with ease. However, on highways, when the speed exceeds 100km/h, the acceleration effort diminishes slightly, and additional distance may need to be considered when overtaking.

In terms of handling, the Yaris 1.5J's steering is precise with minimal play, making lane changes or U-turns during daily driving very agile. The front suspension is MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear suspension is a torsion beam, tuned for comfort. When driving over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension absorbs most of the vibrations, ensuring passengers don't feel overly jolted. While cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, with no significant swaying, providing decent overall stability. The braking performance is average, with a moderate pedal travel and linear braking force, making it easy to control during daily driving.

As for fuel consumption, we drove 50km on urban roads and 50km on the highway. In urban conditions, the fuel consumption was about 7.5L/100km, while on the highway it was about 6.2L/100km. The combined fuel consumption was 7L/100km, which is almost consistent with the official figures. Its fuel economy performance is quite good. In terms of noise control, the cabin noise is minimal below 60km/h, mainly tire noise; once the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise becomes more noticeable but does not affect normal conversations inside the car.

Safety features are a significant highlight of the Yaris 1.5J. The 7 standard airbags are rarely seen in models of its class. Combined with features like vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and rear parking sensors, its safety performance is outstanding. However, it should be noted that it does not come with a rearview camera, which might take some getting used to for new drivers.

Overall, the Yaris 1.5J's core strengths lie in its high safety features, good fuel economy, and strong practicality. Compared to the Honda City Hatchback 1.5S in the same class, the Yaris 1.5J offers more airbags and a more affordable price. Compared to the Proton Persona 1.6 Executive, it has better brand reliability and fuel efficiency. This car is suitable for families that prioritize safety and practicality, or for young commuters in need of a reliable vehicle. If you do not require too many flashy tech features and simply want a durable, safe, and adequately equipped vehicle for daily use, the Yaris 1.5J is a great choice.

Pros
Rich safety configuration: 7 airbags + body stability control, reliable performance in scenarios such as high-speed maneuvering and rainy weather anti-skid
Powertrain suitable for local road conditions: 1.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT provides smooth follow-up in congested city traffic, stable below 110km/h on highways
Fuel-efficient: About 7-7.5L/100km in the city, as low as 6.8L on highways, and can run over 500 kilometers on a single tank of fuel
Cons
The interior details are ordinary, the center console has a noticeable plastic feel, and the fabric seats tend to feel stuffy after being exposed to the sun in summer.
The basic model lacks a reversing camera, making it inconvenient to rely solely on radar and rearview mirrors when reversing in narrow lanes.
Acceleration is weak after exceeding 120km/h on the highway, with insufficient power reserve.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J
As the owner of a 2021 Yaris 1.5J, having driven it for almost two years now, my daily commute and weekend trips in Malaysia have been quite pleasant! Let me start with the exterior, which is definitely a full score — the LED headlights + daytime running lights are especially striking during the hazy morning rush in KL, and the streamlined body looks much better parked under the apartment than the neighbors' old cars. Every time my friends ride in my car, they always praise, "This Yaris looks much more spirited than the old model!" I'd give the interior a 4 out of 5 because it’s sufficient overall but a bit plain in details: the fabric seats can feel a bit stuffy after being parked outside in the summer sun for too long, but the manual angle adjustments are quite handy when adjusting during city traffic jams. The plastic feel of the dashboard is quite noticeable, but the button layout is clear; for instance, the single-zone automatic air conditioning can cool the cabin down in about half an hour on the way to the beach in Penang for the weekend, which is very practical. In terms of safety, I am quite satisfied. The 7 airbags + vehicle stability control really helped during an emergency maneuver on the LDP highway to avoid a suddenly lane-changing motorbike. The car didn’t wobble too much, and I really broke out in a cold sweat at that moment. However, there’s no reversing camera, which means every time I reverse in the tight alleys of my hometown in Ipoh, I have to rely on the parking sensors and side mirrors to inch back slowly. If it had that feature, it would be even better. Overall, as a B-segment small car, its performance on Malaysian roads is still very solid!

As the owner of a 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J in Malaysia for almost two years, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! 7 airbags + vehicle stability system. Last time, while avoiding a suddenly darting motorcycle in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, the car swayed a little but quickly stabilized, avoiding an accident — I’d give the safety performance a full score! As for the interior, there’s a bit of a plastic feel, but the daily-use features are sufficient: the automatic air conditioning is very practical during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, no need to manually adjust the temperature; and with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats, I can fit family luggage when we occasionally head to Genting, so a 4-star rating seems reasonable. The exterior belongs to the "looks better over time" category. The LED headlights are very bright on rural roads in Sabah at night, the body lines are not bulky, and it’s very agile when parking in narrow gaps in Ipoh’s old town area. While not striking at first glance, the more you look, the more pleasing it becomes. A 4-star rating is just right!

As the owner of a 2021 Yaris 1.5J for almost two years, I'm most impressed by the interior! Malaysia's weather is hot, so I always turn on the automatic air conditioning when getting in the car. The single-zone temperature control cools down quickly in just a few minutes. The design of the center console is very user-friendly, and with the multifunctional steering wheel, I can change tracks or adjust the volume without looking down. The keyless entry and start are particularly convenient; every time I carry takeaway nasi lemak or shopping bags, I can just pull the door open without taking out the key. The 60:40 foldable rear seats came in handy when I helped a friend move a small bookshelf, and it fit just fine. The 286L trunk space is usually sufficient for a stroller and backpacks—perfectly suitable for family use. In terms of performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT is very smooth in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic. The car starts and follows without jerking, and it's stable at highway speeds of up to 110 km/h. However, trying to accelerate beyond 120 km/h feels a bit sluggish, as the engine delivers only 107PS. But considering Malaysia’s highways mostly have a speed limit of 110, it's entirely sufficient for everyday use. The fuel consumption is about 7L/100km, allowing me to travel over 500 km on a single tank, which is quite economical given the rising fuel prices. Overall, the interior deserves full marks with no complaints, and the performance is adequate for family use—4 stars is a very fair rating!

As the owner of a 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, after driving in Malaysia for almost two years, I genuinely feel that this car is perfect for local road conditions! Let’s talk about performance first. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT makes following traffic in Kuala Lumpur's congestion super smooth. The accelerator responds well with just a light push, and it’s not sluggish when overtaking on the LDP highway. The fuel consumption stays around 7L regularly, and a full tank lasts me a whole week—very budget-friendly for a working family. Although the interior is not a luxury design, it’s really practical—the single-zone automatic air conditioning cools down super fast during Malaysia’s hot days. The fabric seats are breathable and don’t cause sweatiness, and with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats, there’s more than enough room for my daughter’s stroller plus shopping bags. I must praise the safety features! With 7 airbags and vehicle stability control, during a rainy-day near-slip on Penang’s mountain roads last time, the system immediately stepped in and stabilized the car. I was drenched in cold sweat at the time, but now thinking back, it gives me great peace of mind. As for the exterior, there’s no need to say more—LED headlights and the sleek body design make it super eye-catching when parked in the apartment lot. The red variant especially shines brightly under Malaysia’s sunlight! In conclusion, this car performs exceptionally well in Malaysia, with all aspects—performance, interior, safety, and exterior—being on point. The value for money is truly unbeatable!

As the owner of a 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J and having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I genuinely feel that this small car is perfect for the local road conditions! When it comes to performance, giving it full marks is not an exaggeration — the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT handles the congested roads of Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour exceptionally well. The throttle response is very linear when pressed and doesn’t feel jerky. On weekends, when taking the family to the foothills of Genting Highlands, although the power isn’t particularly strong, it still climbs effortlessly even with five passengers — it's more than adequate. The fuel consumption is also a pleasant surprise: around 7.5L/100km in the city and can drop to 6.8L on the highway, even better than the official figures, making it very economical considering Malaysia’s fuel prices. I'm also very satisfied with the interior! Although it’s a base model, the materials feel solid, and the plastic on the center console doesn’t feel cheap. The seats are fabric, which doesn’t get stuffy even in Malaysia’s hot weather. The most practical feature is the single-zone automatic air conditioning — in Kuala Lumpur’s heat of over 30 degrees Celsius, it cools down the car within minutes. The 60:40 foldable rear seats are also super handy for carrying large items occasionally (like the toy car I bought for my child). Safety gets full marks for sure! With seven airbags and vehicle stability control, I encountered an emergency braking situation once on the LDP highway, and the ABS kicked in quickly, keeping the car steady without skidding. There’s also a hill-start assist function, which is incredibly reassuring for starting on slopes in hilly areas like Penang, especially for new drivers. The exterior loses a point mainly because I find the front grille design a bit plain compared to the sportier higher-end versions, but the overall shape is still very nice. The white body looks fresh under Malaysia’s sunshine and is easy to spot in parking lots around the neighborhood. All in all, this car is really well-suited for family use in Malaysia, offering amazing value for money!
