The executive sedan market in Malaysia has always been a battleground for luxury and practicality. Many consumers not only desire the quality brought by a premium brand but also hope for a balance of space and economy in everyday use. The 2022 Maserati Ghibli Hybrid GranSport, as the brand's first hybrid model, is designed to meet these needs — it retains Maserati's iconic sporty DNA while reducing fuel consumption through its hybrid system, and is equipped with high-end features rarely seen in its class. In this test drive, we’ll see if it can strike a balance between "luxury" and "practicality" and determine whether it is truly suitable for Malaysian roads and consumer demands.

At first glance, the Ghibli Hybrid GranSport’s design is hard to ignore. Its overall lines continue Maserati's classic coupe stance, with a body length of 4974mm and a width of 1945mm. The low-profile design, combined with smooth waistlines, preserves the stability of an executive sedan while infusing a touch of sporty tension. The most striking aspect of the front is the iconic vertical-slatted grille, outlined with black chrome trim, complemented by sharp LED+Xenon headlamps on both sides — highly recognizable. The design of the air intakes on the lower part of the front bumper emphasizes aerodynamics while giving the front an aggressive look. Along the side, the dynamic design of the 18-inch wheels (with both front and rear tires sized at 235/50 R18) pairs with hidden handles for keyless entry, showcasing exquisite attention to detail. At the rear, the signature “boomerang” tail lights feature LED lighting, creating a sharp visual effect when illuminated. The dual exhaust outlets on either side constantly remind observers of its performance-oriented identity. The trunk offers a capacity of 500L, easily accommodating a few suitcases or golf bags for everyday use.

Sitting inside, the luxurious atmosphere of the interior is immediately apparent. The overall design uses dark leather paired with metallic trims. The materials are substantial, and virtually every touchable part is wrapped in soft materials. The dashboard layout is clean and straightforward, with an 8.4-inch touchscreen in the center that offers smooth responsiveness and intuitive operation. Notable configuration details include the front seats with 8-way electric adjustment and lumbar support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats are equipped with independent air-conditioning vents, a foldable center armrest, and three headrests. Thanks to the 2998mm wheelbase, rear legroom is ample; a 175cm passenger can sit in the rear with about two fist widths of space between their knees and the front seat. Additionally, the 15-speaker audio system provides fine sound quality, and the standard single sunroof enhances the driving and riding experience. Practical features like rain-sensing wipers and electrically folding side mirrors are also well-equipped, making everyday use very convenient.

In terms of power, the Ghibli Hybrid GranSport is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. It delivers a maximum output of 330 PS, with peak torque achieved between 1500-4000 rpm, and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the integration of the mild-hybrid system in the initial stages is very smooth, with almost no perceptible jolts. When the accelerator is pressed hard, the power responds quickly; official data claims 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds. For overtaking, simply downshifting delivers a noticeable thrust, while the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive in sport mode. The paddle shifters on the steering wheel are also highly responsive, catering well to occasional bursts of driving excitement. The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone independent suspension, tuned with a focus on sportiness without being overly rigid. When passing speed bumps, the suspension absorbs most of the jolts without causing significant discomfort. On curvy roads, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering is precise, instilling confidence in the driver. During our test on some mountain roads in the Malaysian countryside, its performance on consecutive turns even felt a bit like a sports car, with stability exceeding expectations.

Fuel consumption performance is one of the core highlights of hybrid models. The official combined fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km. During our test drive, which included urban congested roads, highways, and suburban mountain roads, the actual measured fuel consumption was about 8.2L/100km. Considering occasional aggressive driving, this result is quite good for an executive-class sedan. The noise control is also commendable; at 120km/h on the highway, wind noise and tire noise are well suppressed. Combined with the 15-speaker sound system, the cabin remains mostly quiet. However, it should be noted that its regenerative braking system only has a mild intervention, unlike purely electric vehicles that exhibit a significant drag effect, making the driving experience closer to that of a fuel vehicle, which is user-friendly for those accustomed to traditional fuel cars.

In terms of safety features, the Ghibli Hybrid GranSport does very well: 7 airbags (including knee airbags), front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, etc., all come as standard. The ISO FIX child seat interface is also included, ensuring peace of mind for daily family use.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2022 Ghibli Hybrid GranSport are evident: First, it has Maserati's brand premium and design quality, offering more individuality compared to BBA models in the same segment. Second, the hybrid system brings fuel economy benefits, balancing performance and efficiency. Third, it is richly equipped with features like a 15-speaker sound system, electric seats, and independent rear air conditioning, offering more practical value compared to many competitors in the same price range. Compared to the hybrid versions of the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the same segment, its sporty attributes are more prominent, and its sense of luxury is also more unique.

The target audience for this car is clear: If you are a 30-45-year-old business professional who needs a luxury sedan to enhance your presence but does not want to compromise on driving pleasure, or if you are a user who values family practicality with ample space and safety features while occasionally enjoying speed and excitement, then the Ghibli Hybrid GranSport would be an excellent choice. This is not just a "badge-focused" car; instead, it is an executive-class sedan that truly finds a balance between luxury, performance, and practicality.

Every day while commuting and maneuvering through traffic, the rear-wheel-drive handling of this Ghibli Hybrid always surprises me. The 2.0T turbo engine delivers torque at just 1500 RPM, making overtaking effortless. What I love most is the interior—Nappa leather seats paired with 15 speakers make listening to opera during traffic jams soothing and reduce any irritation.

This morning, during the traffic jam, I touched the seat stitching. It was so delicate, like touching silk, and I instantly forgot the annoyance of being stuck on the road.
