In Malaysia's B-Segment market, the Perodua Myvi has always been an unavoidable choice — its high practicality and affordable pricing keep it at the top of sales charts. The 2022 Myvi 1.3 G, as the mid-range version of the facelift model, not only continues the family's high-value advantages but has also made significant upgrades in safety configurations. In this test drive, I focused on experiencing its performance in daily commuting and family outings to see if this "national small car" can still meet the core needs of most users.
The exterior of the 2022 Myvi 1.3 G has no major revolutionary changes, but detailed adjustments make it look more refined. It still retains the familiar compact hatchback design, with a larger trapezoidal lower grille at the front complemented by a blacked-out front lip, adding more sportiness compared to the older model. The headlights have been upgraded to full LED units, enhancing nighttime driving safety thanks to their high recognition when illuminated. The side profile of the car features simple lines, and while the 14-inch steel wheels are not particularly striking, they are durable enough for daily use. Changes at the rear are focused on the taillight cluster, which also adopts LED light sources to complement the front of the car. A small spoiler on the trunk adds a touch of flair. Overall, the design remains practical without excessive decorative elements.
Opening the door, the interior layout is almost identical to the older model, emphasizing simplicity and functionality. The top of the dashboard uses hard plastic, but its textured finish prevents it from looking cheap. The 7-inch central control screen (integrated with the multi-functional steering wheel control system) supports Bluetooth connectivity and basic audio playback, and its operation is quite intuitive. The seats are made of fabric material, with the front row seats offering manual height and forward-backward adjustment. For my height of 175 cm, there was sufficient headroom and legroom after adjustments. The rear space is average — it can feel a bit cramped with three adult passengers, but it’s enough for typical family use. In terms of storage, the door bins can hold two water bottles, and the central armrest box and glove compartment provide adequate capacity. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold configuration, which expands the trunk space and allows it to accommodate a stroller or suitcase without issue.
In terms of powertrain, the Myvi 1.3 G is equipped with a 1.3L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 95PS and a maximum torque of 121N·m. It is paired with a CVT transmission. During daily starts, the power response is relatively quick, making it agile at low speeds in urban areas, and the acceleration is smooth without noticeable lag when stepping on the accelerator. After reaching 60 km/h, the power output becomes more gradual, and overtaking requires pressing the accelerator further. The transmission simulates gear changes, and power follows up as the RPM increases. The suspension setup includes a front MacPherson strut and a rear torsion beam. It does a good job of absorbing common city speed bumps and small road irregularities, with minimal harsh impacts. When cornering at high speeds, the vehicle body leans significantly, but it's still within a controllable range. The stability during daily driving is adequate. The braking performance is average; the initial pedal response feels soft, but sufficient braking force is available in the later stages once accustomed.
In terms of fuel consumption, this test drive mainly involved urban commuting, with some highway driving. The combined fuel consumption was around 5.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 4.5L, but considering urban traffic conditions, this result is quite acceptable. Noise control is average as wind and tire noise become more noticeable at highway speeds, particularly above 100 km/h, where it may be necessary to increase the volume of the music. The safety configuration is a highlight of the Myvi 1.3 G, featuring standard equipment such as Vehicle Stability Control, Lane Departure Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Forward Collision Warning. It also comes with four airbags, which rank it among the best-equipped models in its price range.
Overall, the 2022 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G remains a very suitable commuter car for family users. Its advantages are clear: budget-friendly price, fuel-efficient, rich safety features, and strong practicality. Compared to the Proton Iriz in the same class, the Myvi has lower fuel consumption and more advantageous maintenance costs; however, the Iriz performs slightly better in terms of power. If you are a family user focusing on cost-effectiveness and safety features, or a new driver who just obtained a license, the Myvi 1.3 G is definitely a choice worth considering. It doesn’t have many fancy features, but it can meet all the needs of everyday travel and is a reliable family car.
