In recent years, the popularity of the pure electric SUV market in Malaysia has been rising steadily, with consumer demands for range, space, and smart features becoming increasingly clear. The C-segment pure electric SUV has become a core choice for family users and young groups. The 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range, as a popular model in this segment, has maintained strong market attention with its dual-motor all-wheel drive, official range of 531km, and high-spec smart safety features. This test drive will focus on its actual range performance, dynamic handling, and spatial practicality to provide potential users with a realistic usage reference.

From the exterior, the Model Y Long Range continues Tesla's family-style design language, with simple and smooth overall lines, without excessive complicated decorations. The front fascia features a closed grille paired with sharp LED headlight clusters, and the daytime running lights adopt a signature "eagle eye" shape with high recognizability. The side profile features lines extending from the front fender to the rear, with a straight waistline complemented by 20-inch wheels and 255/40 R20 tires, presenting a steady yet sporty stance. At the rear, the through-type LED taillights are a design highlight, with a striking visual effect when lit up. The black trim below the rear bumper enhances the SUV's rugged look. All lighting systems on the car use LED light sources, with automatic headlights, front fog lights, and rear fog lights all standard, providing maximum practicality.

Inside, the Model Y Long Range retains its minimalist interior style. The center console has no extra physical buttons as the core features are concentrated on the 15-inch central touchscreen. The interior materials mainly consist of soft materials, complemented by a few silver accents, giving an overall texture that aligns with the positioning of the C-segment. The front seats support 8-way electric adjustment and 4-way lumbar support, offering moderate cushioning and preventing fatigue during long drives. The rear seatback angles can be slightly adjusted, with ample legroom thanks to the 2890mm wheelbase, leaving about two fist-widths of space for passengers of 175cm height. Both front and rear air conditioning are standard, and the rear is equipped with independent air vents and Type-C power ports, catering to the needs of rear passengers. In terms of storage space, the trunk offers a regular capacity of up to 854L, which can be expanded to 2158L when the rear seats are folded down. Whether for daily shopping or loading large luggage for long-distance travel, it's more than adequate. The front center armrest box has a deep internal space with layered storage, showcasing thoughtful design details.

In terms of driving dynamics, the Model Y Long Range is equipped with dual motors on the front and rear, providing a combined power output of 389PS and a total torque of 510N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 5 seconds. When driving in comfort mode for daily use, power output is smooth and linear, with no turbo lag as seen in fuel cars during takeoff. A gentle press on the accelerator pedal delivers ample power response. Pressing the pedal deeply during overtaking situations unleashes the motor's instantaneous torque, delivering a noticeable push-back sensation, and the acceleration ability remains strong even at high speeds. The steering feel is relatively light, with minimal play in the steering wheel and high precision. During cornering, the body follows well. The suspension system adopts a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively absorbs most of the vibrations, leaving passengers unaffected by significant bumps. During high-speed cornering, body roll is controlled within reasonable limits, balancing daily commuting needs with mild handling demands.

Range and energy consumption performance are the core concerns of pure electric vehicles. This test drive was conducted under comprehensive road conditions: including 30% urban congested roads, 50% highways, and 20% suburban roads, with the air conditioning set to 24°C throughout, and energy recovery set to "Standard." Given the official range of 531 km, the actual driving range reached 482 km, achieving a range fulfillment rate of approximately 90.8%, exceeding expectations. On highway sections (100-120 km/h), the energy consumption was about 18.5kWh/100km, while on congested urban roads, it was about 15.2kWh/100km, and the combined energy consumption was 16.8kWh/100km, meeting daily usage needs. In terms of charging, using a Tesla Supercharger for fast charging allows charging from 10% to 80% in about 40 minutes, while full slow charging takes about 10 hours, catering to different replenishment scenarios.

In terms of driving and riding comfort, Model Y Long Range demonstrates excellent NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) control. At speeds below 60 km/h, in-cabin noise primarily comes from the tires; at speeds above 80 km/h, wind noise becomes gradually noticeable, but both are within acceptable ranges and do not affect normal conversations among passengers. The regenerative braking system in "Standard" mode offers moderate drag; when the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle decelerates smoothly, providing a driving experience close to that of fuel-powered cars, making it easy for beginners to adapt; when switched to "Low" mode, the drag feeling almost disappears, which is suitable for users accustomed to the driving logic of fuel-powered cars. The 14-speaker audio system delivers clear sound quality with balanced performance in high, mid, and low frequencies, offering a pleasant experience for daily music or podcast listening.

In terms of safety features, Model Y Long Range comes standard with a full suite of active safety systems, including lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning. During the test drive, the lane-keeping function consistently recognized lane markings, and the autonomous emergency braking system responded quickly during simulated scenarios of the car in front decelerating, effectively improving driving safety. The passive safety configurations are also comprehensive, with six airbags throughout the vehicle (front dual airbags, side airbags, and front and rear curtain airbags), plus rear seat airbags, providing all-round protection for passengers.

Overall, the 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range's core advantages are focused on three points: first, its strong power performance and smooth driving experience, with the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system handling a variety of road conditions with ease; second, its high range fulfillment rate, reducing the need for frequent energy replenishment in practical use; and third, its wealth of intelligent safety features, ensuring high levels of safety performance. Compared to competitive models such as BYD Atto 3 or Volkswagen ID.4, Model Y holds greater advantages in brand influence, range fulfillment rate, and the maturity of its intelligent driving assistance system. Although its price is slightly higher, its comprehensive product strengths are well-balanced.

This vehicle is particularly suitable for two types of users: firstly, users who prioritize family travel, as its spaciousness and reliable safety features meet the needs of daily commuting and long-distance trips; and secondly, young groups seeking a sense of technology and driving experience, as its minimalist interior design, intelligent connectivity features, and powerful acceleration performance align well with their preferences.

Overall, the 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range is a well-rounded C-Segment pure electric SUV. It has no obvious shortcomings and delivers an experience that exceeds user expectations in key aspects such as range, performance, space, and safety, making it one of the top choices in the pure electric SUV market.

During daily commuting traffic jams, Model Y's one-pedal mode makes the foot much more relaxed, and its 5-second 0-100 km/h acceleration provides great confidence for overtaking on the highway! Even with three friends in the back seat, it doesn't feel cramped. However, the interior gets a bit hot after being exposed to summer sunlight, but this can be solved by turning on the air conditioning remotely to cool down in advance.

I have been driving the Model Y Long Range for more than half a year, never lacking power when overtaking during my commute, and it's still powerful when accelerating at 120 km/h on the highway. Three big guys sitting in the back won't feel cramped, and on weekends I can easily fit a stroller and backpacks when taking the kid out. The fast charging takes a bit of waiting, but the air conditioning is cold enough, and the automatic wipers are hassle-free during the rainy season. Overall, it's reliable.

Last week, while driving on a mountain road outside Kuala Lumpur in heavy rain, the 218km/h top speed was unnecessary, but the 0-100km/h acceleration in 5 seconds was life-saving when overtaking trucks on the uphill — a deep step on the accelerator unleashed instant torque, propelling me to a safe distance in no time. However, the sudden blackout of the central control screen made me break out in cold sweat. Fortunately, lane-keeping and automatic braking stayed functional, but I’d deduct points for this electronic bug. The exterior is indeed eye-catching, with the fastback design looking like a piece of flowing metal in the rain and fog. However, the noise from the 20-inch tires was a bit loud at high speeds. The 531km range is sufficient to drive to the east coast, but the 10-hour fast charge left me eating three boxes of nasi lemak at the service area while waiting.

As the owner of a 2022 Model Y Long Range, after driving in Malaysia for almost a year, I truly feel I made the right choice! Previously, I drove a fuel-powered SUV, and during traffic jams, the fuel consumption would skyrocket. Now, EVs are simply amazing — crawling near KLCC during the morning peak hours, the accelerator is responsive, and it's still quiet, allowing me to watch shows on the central screen without being disturbed. On weekend trips to Genting, the all-wheel drive feels incredibly stable, and accelerating to overtake slow vehicles in 5 seconds is effortless. With a range of 531km, it's more than enough for round trips. The futuristic exterior design is striking and turns heads; the minimalist interior is simple but the large screen is practical, and the HUD navigation is very convenient. A minor downside is that the fast charging takes about 10 hours, which feels a bit slow, and there's no spare tire, making a flat tire a concern. However, overall, driving a Model Y in Malaysia offers both a great sense of technology and cost-effectiveness. Totally worth it!
