Today, Malaysia's C-segment SUV market is undergoing an electrification transformation, and more and more family buyers are considering pure electric models when changing cars — they want to retain the practicality of an SUV while enjoying the low running costs of an electric vehicle. As one of the few pure electric options in this segment focusing on safety and luxury, the Volvo XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD, with its 408PS dual motor powertrain, 418km official range, and Volvo's signature safety features, has become a contender for many consumers. In this test drive, we focus on its daily driving quality, spatial practicality, and whether its range can meet the needs of intercity travel for Malaysian users.

From the exterior, the XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD continues the design outline of the petrol version of the XC40, but includes exclusive details unique to electric vehicles. The front features a closed grille, paired with the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, offering high recognizability; the side of the car maintains the compact SUV proportions with 19-inch dual-tone wheels (front 235/50 R19, rear 255/45 R19) adding a sporty touch, while the muscular lines of the rear fenders retain the robust feel of an SUV. The rear is highlighted by the Viking Axe-shaped LED taillights, which remain striking, but due to it being an electric vehicle, the exhaust layout is removed, giving it a simpler overall appearance.

Stepping inside, the interior style leans towards Scandinavian simplicity, with a 9-inch touchscreen at the center of the dashboard and very few physical buttons for a clear operational layout. In terms of material usage, the upper part of the dashboard is made of soft textured plastic, the door panels are wrapped in leather, complemented by silver trims, offering a quality feel that matches its luxury C-segment positioning. The front seats are power-adjustable, with memory functions for the driver’s seat; the cushioning is firm but provides good support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, offering 460L of trunk space in the standard state, which can be expanded to accommodate larger items like strollers or suitcases when folded down. With a wheelbase of 2,702mm, the rear legroom is sufficient; a 175cm passenger sitting in the back has two fists' worth of space between their knees and the front seat, with a fist's distance above their head, making it suitable for family use.

In terms of power, the XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD is equipped with front and rear dual motors, delivering a combined maximum power of 408PS and a total torque of 660N·m, achieving an official 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. During actual driving, the response upon start is immediate; a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation, and when overtaking at high speeds, pressing harder on the accelerator still delivers ample power without needing to wait for the revs to build. It offers multiple driving modes: the eco mode softens the power output, making it suitable for daily commuting, while the sport mode delivers more aggressive performance, catering to users seeking driving excitement.

As for handling, the front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup is tuned for comfort without compromising resilience. When going over speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, the suspension effectively filters out most minor vibrations, and the body remains stable without significant sway; when cornering, body roll is well-controlled, the steering wheel turns with precision, with minimal play, providing confidence to the driver. However, due to its weight of 2,150kg, the car's heft can be felt during fast lane changes, but the added stability from the all-wheel-drive system ensures consistent body balance.

In terms of range and charging, the official range is 418km. During our test under mixed urban and highway conditions in Malaysia, with the air conditioning on and music playing throughout, the actual range was approximately 360km, achieving a rate of about 86%—a fairly average performance. The battery capacity is 78kWh, and using DC fast charging, it takes about 40 minutes to go from 10% to 80%. With AC slow charging, it takes around 8 hours, which comfortably meets daily household charging needs.

In terms of comfort, the noise control of the XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD is excellent. At speeds below 60km/h, external noise is nearly inaudible. At higher speeds, wind and tire noise are present but remain within acceptable limits. The seats offer great support and cushioning, and the rear row is equipped with independent air vents, ensuring passengers don't feel stuffy during long-distance travel.

Safety configuration is Volvo's strong point. This car comes standard with 7 airbags, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and also features automatic parking and front and rear parking sensors, making it convenient for new drivers to park. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Tesla Model Y or Volkswagen ID.4, the XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD offers more comprehensive safety features and a more luxurious interior quality.

In summary, the core strengths of the XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD lie in its strong performance, comprehensive safety features, practical space, and luxurious Nordic design. It is suitable for families who prioritize safety and comfort as well as young people who desire performance without compromising practicality. If your budget is around RM260,000 and you're looking for a well-rounded electric SUV, the XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD is worth considering.

Pros
Strong acceleration performance (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds), easy overtaking, AWD system provides strong grip on rainy days
Nordic-style interior with good texture, wooden trim panels and crystal gear shift enhance luxury feel, Harman Kardon audio delivers excellent sound quality
Comprehensive safety features, practical functions like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping, avoided multiple accidents
Cons
The steering wheel is relatively heavy when driving slowly in urban areas, causing wrist fatigue for women after prolonged use.
The rear middle floor is high, making the foot space for the middle passenger cramped, and the glove box lacks damping.
The central control screen occasionally lags, the resolution of the reversing/360 cameras is average, and the clarity at night is insufficient.

As the owner of an XC40 Recharge P8, I've been driving it in Malaysia for over half a year. Let's talk about the performance first — the 4.9-second 0-100 km/h acceleration is really powerful! During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, if someone cuts in line, a deep press on the accelerator overtakes them steadily, and the AWD performs especially well on the rainy LDP highway. Previously, driving a friend's two-wheel drive car in heavy rain felt a bit unstable, but this car has significantly better grip on waterlogged roads. However, considering the car weighs over 2 tons, the steering wheel does feel a bit heavy when trailing at low speeds in the city. For girls, driving for a long time may make their wrists feel sore. I'll deduct some points for this, but overall, I'm quite satisfied. As for the interior, I really like Volvo's Nordic design, the wooden trim on the center console feels very high-quality, and the Harman Kardon sound system is great for listening to Malaysian local songs during traffic jams after work. However, the rear center floor is a bit high, so when I took three friends to Genting, the person in the middle said that foot space was a bit tight. Also, the lack of damping on the glove compartment causes a "bang" sound when closing it. If the details were a bit more refined, it would be perfect. Overall, I'm still very satisfied.

As the owner of a 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD, having driven it in Malaysia for more than half a year, I genuinely want to share a few thoughts about this car. First of all, I must give full marks for its exterior! The Nordic design of the XC40 stands out in Kuala Lumpur's traffic, especially when the Thor's hammer headlights are turned on, instantly boosting its recognition. Every time I park at Pavilion or downstairs in my neighborhood, people always turn their heads to look. Even gas station staff have asked me if this is the latest Volvo model—it truly feels prestigious. As for the interior, I’d give it 4 stars. The overall quality is impeccable, and the minimalist Nordic design really suits my taste, especially the Orrefors crystal gear shifter, which feels particularly cool and premium to the touch. However, there's a small downside: sometimes the central control screen responds a bit slowly. Particularly during traffic jams in KL, when I want to quickly change a song or adjust the air conditioning, it occasionally lags. If this could be improved, it would be perfect. In terms of safety, I also give it 4 stars. Volvo's safety features really make me feel at ease. The automatic braking has helped me avoid a rear-end collision once on Penang's narrow streets, and the lane-keeping assist makes long drives on the North-South Highway particularly effortless. However, one thing is that the resolution of the rearview camera seems average. Sometimes when reversing at night in the neighborhood, it's not very clear to see obstacles behind. If it could be upgraded to HD, that would be even better. Overall, this car is very comfortable to drive in Malaysia. It has a stunning exterior, a high-quality interior, and reliable safety features, though there are some small details that could be improved.

As the owner of the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD, having driven it for almost a year in Malaysia, the two points I want to talk about the most are safety and exterior design. Let’s talk about safety first. I’d give it a 4 because overall it really gives me peace of mind, but there’s a small detail I want to mention. On Malaysia’s highways, it’s common to encounter cars suddenly changing lanes, and this active braking system reacts incredibly fast. Once on the North-South Expressway, the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could even react, the car braked itself and literally saved me! There are also features like 7 airbags and lane-keeping assist, which make long drives or navigating traffic in Kuala Lumpur feel like the car is “watching out” for road conditions for me. However, there was one time I was reversing in the old streets of Penang, and although there’s a rear camera, if it had a 360-degree bird’s-eye view camera, it would’ve made maneuvering those narrow alleys much easier. That’s a small regret—otherwise, I would definitely have given safety a 5. Now about the exterior, it’s full marks! The XC40’s design really stands out on Malaysian streets, especially with the Crystal White Metallic paint I chose, which looks particularly premium under the tropical sunlight. The iconic Thor’s Hammer headlights are incredibly recognizable when driving at night, and my friends say they can spot my car from far away. Then there’s the closed front grille, which retains Volvo’s signature family design while emphasizing the modern tech of an electric vehicle. It pairs beautifully with the lines of the car body. Every time I park in a mall or in front of a café, someone always comes over to ask what car it is. In terms of exterior design, I have nothing to complain about—it’s completely in line with my aesthetic!

As the owner of the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV P8 AWD, after almost a year of driving it in Malaysia, what surprised me the most is its performance! The official 4.9-second 0-100 km/h acceleration is no exaggeration — during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, when there’s occasionally an open stretch on the expressway, a light tap on the accelerator instantly leaves the traffic behind. That smooth yet powerful acceleration feels much better than the combustion SUVs I’ve driven before. Moreover, during Malaysia's rainy season, when encountering flooded roads, the AWD system provides very stable grip. It handles turns or wet roads without skidding, and switching lanes on the highway like the North-South Expressway is incredibly smooth. As for performance, I’d give it a solid full score with no complaints! Speaking of safety, I’m actually quite satisfied—I'd give it 4 out of 5 because there’s no major issue, though perhaps I had too high expectations? For instance, the automatic emergency braking system responds very sensitively during city driving in Kuala Lumpur; there was one time when the car in front suddenly braked and the system automatically stopped my car. The lane departure warning is also timely on the highway. However, there was one time I was reversing in a narrow alley in Penang, and I felt the 360-degree camera clarity could use some improvement. While I didn’t hit anything, the inability to see details clearly was a bit nerve-wracking. Overall, the safety features are comprehensive, and I feel assured using them daily, but there’s still room for improvement in the finer details.

As the owner of an XC40 Recharge, I've been driving it in Malaysia for nearly half a year. Starting with the exterior—I'd give it a 4 mainly because it has a classic aesthetic appeal rather than a "wow" factor at first glance. The boxy silhouette of the XC40 stands out quite well amid the traffic in KL, and the Thor's Hammer headlights are quite eye-catching during the day. However, the body lines lean towards a more stable design rather than the aggressive style of some EVs. The crystal white paint I chose is quite resistant to dirt under the intense sun, which is practical during Malaysia's rainy and dusty seasons. That said, the wheel design could be sportier to score higher. The interior deserves full marks! The moment I stepped inside, it felt incredibly comfortable—Volvo's Scandinavian style is totally to my taste. The wood grain panel on the T-shaped center console feels excellent to the touch, and the Nappa leather seats don't feel stuffy even in the over-30-degree temperatures in Kuala Lumpur. The front seats even come with a ventilation function, so getting stuck in traffic on the LDP highway during rush hour isn't unbearable. The 9-inch central control screen is very responsive, and the Harman Kardon sound system delivers particularly clear audio when listening to local Malaysian radio stations. The rear air conditioning vents also provide sufficient cooling, so when taking the family to Genting Highlands on the weekend, my parents in the backseat didn't feel hot. The most thoughtful feature is the wireless charging pad; given how often one looks for charging outlets in Malaysia, being able to charge the phone as soon as you get in the car is definitely a bonus!
