Volvo S90 2020 Review

The executive sedan market has always been a balance between luxury and practicality. Many family users and business professionals are looking for a vehicle in this segment that can meet daily commuting needs while also maintaining a respectable appearance. The 2020 Volvo S90 T5, as a popular choice in this class, attracts attention with Volvo's signature safety features, the performance of its 2.0T turbocharged engine, and its 5-year/120,000-kilometer extended warranty policy. We got our hands on the actual vehicle this time to see whether its static features and dynamic driving experience truly live up to its executive-level positioning, providing potential buyers with a clear reference.
In terms of appearance, the S90 T5 continues Volvo's family design language, with an overall design that leans towards a sleek and elegant look. The front grille features vertical slats paired with the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, offering high recognizability even in traffic. The side profile displays a character line that extends from the front fender to the rear, paired with 19-inch multi-spoke wheels, making the 4963mm length appear less cumbersome. The rear design is relatively simple, with "Viking Axe" LED taillights that have a distinctive lighting effect when lit. However, the rear bumper design is more conventional, featuring no overly flashy elements. As for the lighting system, the standard LED headlights and front fog lights provide good nighttime illumination, and the combination of automatic headlights with rain-sensing windshield wipers enhances daily convenience.
Upon entering the car, the interior style of the S90 T5 leans toward a simple Nordic design with minimal complex lines. Most areas of the dashboard are wrapped in soft-touch materials, providing a decent tactile feel. However, compared to some competitors in the same segment, the luxury ambiance feels somewhat subtle. The 12.3-inch touchscreen is the center of the interior. While the size is adequate, its operation logic takes some time to get used to, particularly since adjustments such as air conditioning need to be made via touch controls rather than physical buttons. The instrument cluster features an adaptive digital display, which can switch styles based on driving modes and offers a wealth of information. In terms of features, keyless entry, electrically adjustable front seats, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning are standard, and the rear seat area is equipped with independent air-conditioning vents to accommodate the needs of rear passengers. For storage space, the front central armrest box and door panel storage compartments are sufficient. The trunk offers a capacity of 500 liters, which can fit two 28-inch suitcases, meeting the needs of family travel.
Space is one of the advantages of the S90 T5, with its 2941mm wheelbase providing a spacious rear legroom. Passengers 175cm tall sitting in the rear have about two fist's distance between their knees and the front seat backs, and there is also one fist of headroom, so it does not feel cramped. However, the center floor has a certain amount of protrusion, which might make longer rides uncomfortable for the middle passenger. The seat comfort is commendable; the front seats offer adequate support and cushioning, making long drives less fatiguing. The rear seats are relatively soft and well-suited for daily commutes or long trips.
In terms of power, the S90 T5 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 257PS, with a maximum torque output at 4800rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. On the road, the power response during acceleration is relatively quick, with a throttle tuned to be linear, avoiding any abrupt surges. When switched to sport mode, the transmission's gear-shifting logic becomes more aggressive, and a strong sense of acceleration is evident when you press the gas pedal hard. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.8 seconds ranks among the top tier in its class, providing confidence during overtaking. However, at low-speed crawling, the transmission occasionally experiences slight jerking, affecting smoothness to some extent.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the S90 T5 uses a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is generally tuned for comfort. The steering wheel offers moderate effort and precise feedback, making daily driving easy. When facing bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most of the tiny vibrations, but when encountering larger speed bumps, rear passengers may feel a noticeable bounce. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled without significant swaying, providing sufficient confidence. The drivetrain is rear-wheel drive, which is quite common in executive sedans, offering excellent stability during high-speed cruising.
As for fuel consumption, we drove equally on urban roads and highways, achieving an average fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure of 7L/100km. However, considering its 1840kg weight, this result is still acceptable. The braking performance is stable, and during emergency braking, the body posture is well-controlled without obvious nosedive effects. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise do enter the cabin during high-speed driving, but it remains within an acceptable range and does not interfere with normal conversations.
Safety features have always been a strong point for Volvo. The S90 T5 comes standard with 6 airbags, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking. During testing, we tried out the autonomous emergency braking system, which issues an early warning when detecting obstacles ahead. If the driver does not react, the system brakes automatically, and the response speed and braking force are quite satisfactory. The 360-degree panoramic camera provides good clarity, and combined with front and rear sensors, even novice drivers can easily park.
Overall, the main strengths of the 2020 Volvo S90 T5 lie in its safety features, spacious interior, and solid performance. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the S90 T5 has a more affordable price and more comprehensive safety features. Additionally, the 5-year/120,000 km extended warranty offers more peace of mind to owners. However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to the luxury feel of the interior and the smoothness of the transmission.
This car is suitable for families that value safety and space or consumers looking for an executive sedan that balances business and family use. If you are not pursuing overly flashy luxury and prioritize practicality and safety, the S90 T5 will be a great choice. Overall, it's a well-rounded executive sedan that embodies Volvo's brand philosophy with its solid product strength.
