2023 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T Max Review

The compact SUV market has always been the top choice for Malaysian family users. It requires adequate space, practical configurations, while also balancing fuel consumption and driving comfort. The 2023 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T Max, as a popular contender in this segment, returns to the spotlight this time with 180PS turbocharged power, comprehensive safety configurations, and a 5-year or 300,000 km long warranty. The core purpose of my test drive this time is to see if it can truly meet users' expectations in daily commuting and weekend family outing scenarios.
The Tucson has a highly recognizable exterior and adopts a rugged design style. The front features a large blacked-out mesh grille integrated with split LED daytime running lights on both sides, exuding a strong sense of technology when illuminated. The side profile has smooth lines, and the 19-inch wheels coupled with 235/55 R19 tires give the side a more robust look. The rear-end features through-type LED taillights which echo the front design, and the silver skid plate under the tailgate enhances the SUV's ruggedness. In terms of details, both front and rear fog lights are standard, and the automatic headlights can turn on automatically when entering tunnels, which is quite practical.
Inside, the Tucson's interior is predominantly dark, with soft-touch materials that feel pleasant. The central control layout is relatively simple; the 8-inch touchscreen supports touch operation, and the Sound Plus function along with 6 speakers can meet daily music needs. The instrument cluster uses Electroluminescent Analogue type display, providing clear information, while the multifunction steering wheel and paddle shifters come standard and are convenient to use. In terms of configurations, the front driver’s seat is electrically adjustable, while the front passenger seat is manual. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold and manual recline, allowing for a comfortable seating angle. The front has a single-zone manual air conditioner, and the rear is equipped with air conditioning vents. Additionally, the 220V/230V power outlet in the front ensures rear passengers can charge their devices comfortably during long trips.
Speaking of space, the Tucson has a wheelbase of 2670mm and a total length of 4630mm. The front row provides ample headroom and legroom; for a person 175cm tall, there’s over a fist-width of headroom. Rear legroom is about two fists, and the floor hump in the middle is low, so accommodating three people in the back won't feel too cramped. The trunk has a capacity of 488L, which is sufficient for storing a stroller or several suitcases. Folding down the rear seats allows for storing larger items. In terms of storage, the door panels have compartments for two water bottles, and the central armrest and glovebox space are adequate.
For performance, the 1.6T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 180PS and a peak torque of 265N·m, paired with a DCT transmission. During start-up, the power response is quick; a light press on the accelerator gets the car moving, and following traffic in the city doesn’t feel sluggish. When speeding up to over 80km/h and pressing the accelerator further for overtaking, the power remains sufficient, and the transmission shifts smoothly without noticeable jolts. There are two driving modes to choose from: normal and sport. In sport mode, the accelerator becomes more sensitive. In terms of fuel efficiency, during this test drive, which involved both city and highway driving in equal parts, the actual consumption was approximately 7.5L/100km, which is not much different from the official figure of 7.1L. It’s considered fuel-efficient for SUVs in this class.
The handling and chassis performance are good. With front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, it can filter out most of the finer vibrations on bumpy city roads, and it doesn't feel too stiff when going over speed bumps. At high speeds, the body remains stable, the steering wheel is precise with no slack, and body roll is well-controlled when taking corners. Regarding braking, it features ventilated disc brakes both front and rear, with a linear brake pedal feel, and the body doesn't swerve during emergency braking. In terms of noise control, the interior is very quiet at speeds below 60 km/h in the city, while at 120 km/h on the highway, there is some wind and tire noise, but it won't affect conversations or listening to music.
Safety features are a highlight of the Tucson, with 6 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, and electronic stability control as standard. It also comes with active safety features like lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control (ACC). Front and rear parking sensors and cameras assist with parking, while the Keyless Operation and electronic parking brake functions are convenient to use. The car offers a comprehensive warranty of 5 years or 300,000 km, which is longer than many competitors in the same class, adding to its appeal.
In summary, the core strengths of the 2023 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T Max are evident: sufficient power with fuel efficiency, a spacious interior suitable for families, rich safety features, and a long warranty period that provides peace of mind. Compared to competitors like the CR-V or RAV4, the Tucson is priced at RM195,888 and offers better specifications, such as standard ACC and front and rear cameras, whereas the mid-range CR-V may require additional costs for similar features.
This car is very suitable for practical and safety-conscious family users, such as couples with children. It meets the needs for daily commuting and weekend family outings. It is also suitable for young professionals, as its power and handling cater to everyday driving requirements, and it doesn't fall behind in terms of features. If you're looking for a spacious, fuel-efficient, and well-equipped C-segment SUV with comprehensive safety features, the Tucson 1.6T Max is a solid choice. It may not be the most stunning, but it performs very well in terms of balance, making it a pragmatic family SUV.
