In the B-segment 7-seater SUV market in Malaysia, the needs of family users always revolve around three core aspects: "sufficient space, practical features, and affordable price." The Perodua Aruz has been a popular choice in this segment, and the 2023 1.5L AV model, with its standard Level 2 driving assistance, flexible 7-seater layout, and Perodua's consistent high value-for-money proposition, has been a key consideration for many families. This time, we got a test drive of the Aruz 1.5L AV, with the core aim of assessing whether its static practicality fits multi-child families and if its dynamic performance can meet the dual demands of daily commuting and weekend trips.

From a distance, the 2023 Aruz 1.5L AV's exterior continues Perodua's rugged style, with overall square lines that suit the practical positioning of a 7-seater SUV. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, connected by chrome strips to the sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it good recognition; the side profile's waistline extends from the fender to the rear, and the 16-inch alloy wheels prevent it from looking overly bulky visually. The rear LED tail lights adopt a through-type design (though the center is not illuminated), paired with a silver lower skid plate, making it more refined compared to the older version.

Opening the door, the interior features a black color scheme. The dashboard uses soft-touch materials combined with silver trims. While the materials cannot be called luxurious, the workmanship is quite tidy. The 9-inch touchscreen sits atop the dashboard, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with smooth operation; below is the manual air conditioning digital control panel with memory function, making adjustments intuitive and convenient. In terms of equipment, the Aruz 1.5L AV performs solidly: keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, a 6-speaker audio system, and rear air-conditioning vents are all included. Its safety configurations are particularly noteworthy, featuring standard 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, and a Level 2 driving assistance system (including ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking), which are top-tier in its price range.

Space is one of Aruz's core strengths. With body dimensions of 4425mm × 1730mm × 1660mm and a wheelbase of 2750mm, this wheelbase is on the longer side among B-segment SUVs. The front row offers decent space, with a 175cm passenger having a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The second-row seats support 60:40 split and one-touch folding, providing up to two fists of legroom, and won't feel too cramped even with child seats. The third-row seats are more suitable for children or short-distance adult passengers, with legroom that is decent for this class of 7-seater cars. Regarding storage, the trunk offers a regular capacity of 137L, extending to 514L when the third row is folded down, and can hold even larger items when the second row is folded, meeting the needs of family outings. Inside, there are front cup holders, a central armrest box, and rear door storage compartments, maximizing practicality.

In terms of power, the Aruz 1.5L AV is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 106PS and a peak torque of 138N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox and a rear-wheel-drive layout. During actual driving, acceleration is fairly light, and the power response is active at low speeds, making it suitable for daily commuting. However, past 80 km/h, further acceleration requires a hard push on the accelerator. The CVT gearbox simulates gear shifts, but power delivery remains smooth and lacks explosiveness. There are Normal and Eco driving modes to choose from, with the Eco mode providing gentler throttle response, suitable for stop-and-go city driving.

In terms of handling, the Aruz adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension (rear-wheel drive layout). The steering wheel is relatively light in turning effort and has average precision; it is suitable for daily driving but lacks driving excitement. The suspension tuning leans towards comfort, filtering out most minor bumps when passing speed bumps or uneven roads. However, body roll is quite noticeable when cornering at high speeds, so speed control is needed. The braking performance is average, the brake pedal travel is moderate, the initial braking force is not very strong, but the force in the later stage is sufficient, giving reasonable confidence during daily driving.

During the test drive, we evaluated the fuel consumption: about 8.5L/100km in congested city traffic, and around 6.0L/100km during highway cruising. The combined fuel consumption is approximately 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.41L/100km. However, considering the weight of the 7-seater and the rear-wheel drive layout, this result is within a normal range. As for noise control, it’s relatively quiet under 60km/h, but wind and tire noise become noticeably louder above 80km/h. Nonetheless, this is acceptable within its price range. The seat comfort is commendable, with decent support in the front seats for long drives. The second-row seats, with adjustable backrest angles, offer a better seating experience compared to the third row.

Overall, the key advantages of the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV are clear: spacious 7-seater capability, practical features (especially safety features), and Perodua’s affordable pricing (RM 75,500). Compared to peers like the Proton X70 1.5T Standard (which is more expensive and a 5-seater) or Honda BR-V 1.5V (which has slightly fewer features), the Aruz holds a stronger position in terms of value for money and 7-seater practicality.

The target audience for this vehicle is clear: families who value space and safety, particularly those who frequently need to transport 5-7 people and have a budget in the RM 70,000-80,000 range. It is not ideal for users seeking performance or driving fun, but as a daily commuter or a family vehicle for weekend trips, its well-rounded performance is sufficient to meet these needs.

In conclusion, the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV is a practical 7-seater SUV designed "for families," addressing core needs with solid features and ample space. It is one of the more recommendable choices in its price range.

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV, after driving it in Malaysia for almost half a year, here’s my honest review~ The exterior gets 4 stars. It follows Perodua’s usual practical design. The body lines aren’t particularly striking, but the boxy shape fits the SUV positioning well. Especially with the LED headlights and daytime running lights, the visibility during Kuala Lumpur's hazy morning and evening traffic peaks is quite good. However, the rear design feels a bit plain—adding more layers would make it even better. Safety deserves a full score! With 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, all the safety features are maxed out. Last time in Penang’s roundabout, I was almost grazed by a motorcycle suddenly cutting into my lane, but the emergency braking system kicked in and saved me—truly a life saver. When I take my family on long drives along the East Coast Highway, the ACC adaptive cruise control is also very steady, making long trips much more relaxing. The sense of safety is absolutely top-notch. In terms of performance, I’d give it 4 stars. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is sufficient for city driving, with smooth acceleration and overtaking. The CVT transmission doesn’t feel jerky either. However, when fully loaded with 7 people going up Genting Highlands, the power does struggle a bit and requires heavier pressing on the gas pedal, but for daily family use, it’s entirely fine. Considering Malaysia's predominantly urban roads and highways, the performance is quite satisfactory. Overall, as a 7-seater family SUV, its performance at this price point leaves me quite satisfied~

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV for more than half a year, the overall experience really suits the driving conditions in Malaysia! Performance deserves a full 5-star rating — the 1.5L NA engine + CVT might not be very powerful, but it’s more than enough for daily traffic congestion in KL or climbing uphill to Genting Highlands with family on weekends. The rear-wheel drive is also very stable on the slippery LDP highway during rainy days. Acceleration is smooth, and gear shifts are seamless without any jerks. Interior is a 4-star — the plastic texture is indeed a bit much, but thankfully the design is practical: the 9-inch infotainment screen responds quickly, and the digital air conditioning with memory function saves you from re-adjusting the temperature every time you get in. The rear air vents are very considerate for passengers, especially given Malaysia’s hot weather. Safety undoubtedly deserves a 5-star rating! With 6 airbags and standard features like Lane Departure Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking, it really saved me once on Jalan Ampang when I was following too closely; the system gave an alert and even lightly braked for me. The ACC adaptive cruise control is especially handy on long drives along the North-South Expressway, making the journey much more relaxed and secure. Exterior gets 4 stars — the overall design leans towards a rugged look, and the LED headlights and daytime running lights are quite spirited. However, the side profile lines are rather average. That said, as a family-oriented 7-seater SUV, its understated charm is enough, and it has decent recognition when parked in the neighborhood. All in all, at this price point, being able to get a 7-seater SUV with excellent safety features and great drivability makes it very friendly for Malaysian family users!

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV, after driving in Malaysia for almost six months, the safety features are what impressed me the most! After all, on Malaysian highways, you often encounter cars suddenly changing lanes, and in rural areas, there are those unlit roads. The standard lane departure warning and autonomous braking have saved me a few times — one time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked, and the system immediately applied the brakes for me. It gave me a scare but kept us safe. With six airbags and vehicle stability control, I feel especially confident taking my family out, totally worth a 5-star rating! The performance is also quite surprising. A 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT, while not a performance car, it’s particularly smooth in traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur and doesn’t feel sluggish when starting. On weekends, I took my whole family to Genting Highlands, and the power was sufficient even on uphill drives; with seven people fully loaded, it didn’t feel underpowered. The rear-wheel drive provides much better stability on curves compared to the front-wheel-drive car I previously owned, and it cruises steadily at 110km/h on highways. Absolutely deserves a 5-star rating for performance. As for the interior, overall, I’m quite satisfied, so I’d give it 4 stars. The 9-inch touchscreen on the center console responds quickly, the air conditioning has memory function, and there’s also separate air conditioning for the rear seats, which is super practical in Malaysia’s hot weather. However, the plastic finish does feel a bit heavy, especially on the door panels and the lower part of the center console. If more soft-touch materials could be added, it would be even better. The seats are manually adjustable, which is slightly inconvenient to adjust, but they have decent support, so they’re not tiring for long trips. Overall, being able to get a 7-seater SUV like this for just over 70,000 MYR, the value for money is truly high. The safety and performance have completely exceeded expectations, and while the interior has some minor drawbacks, it’s sufficient. It’s very suitable for families like ours with both older and younger members!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV, after driving it for more than half a year, I can say the overall experience is quite great! First of all, I must give full marks for the exterior. The streamlined body along with the LED headlights makes it incredibly recognizable under Malaysia's scorching sun. Every time I park it in front of the Lotus supermarket, someone asks if it's a new model—it feels really good! In terms of performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is more than adequate for city commuting. The CVT gearbox shifts smoothly, although you need to step on the accelerator harder for overtaking on the highway. The power response is slightly delayed, possibly due to the heavier body. The interior is well-built, and the 9-inch infotainment screen operates smoothly. The rear air conditioning is also very practical; during Malaysia's hot weather, my family sitting in the back doesn’t feel stuffy. Safety features are what I’m most satisfied with. Six airbags, along with lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking, make a huge difference. Last time, I almost rear-ended the car in front while on the Penang highway, but the autonomous braking intervened in time, giving me quite a scare. However, the steering wheel adjustment is manual, which is a bit inconvenient. If it were electrically adjustable, it would be perfect. All in all, as a 7-seater SUV, the performance at this price point really delivers great value for money. I highly recommend it to friends who need a family car!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Aruz 1.5L AV, having driven it in Malaysia for over half a year, I have some thoughts to share about the interior and safety aspects. The interior deserves a 4-star rating, which is genuinely "quite satisfied." When driving with my family on the North-South Expressway, the second row’s 60:40 split seats with one-touch folding make it super convenient for elderly passengers to get in and out of the third row. The front digital air-conditioning with a memory function is a considerate touch—it saves me and my wife the trouble of repeatedly adjusting the temperature when we switch driving. However, there’s a noticeable plastic feel to it; the dashboard and door panels feel hard to the touch. If they could add some soft padding, it would be much more comfortable. Given the price tag of over RM70,000, this minor shortfall is still something to note. Safety absolutely deserves full marks! Last month, on the LDP highway in Selangor, the car in front of me suddenly braked sharply. Before I even had time to react, the active braking system engaged and stopped me just half a meter from the car ahead, giving me a real scare. Driving in the congested streets of Kuala Lumpur, the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) feels like a lifesaver for my right foot, keeping a steady following distance. With six airbags and a stability control system, I feel especially reassured when driving to Genting Highlands’ hilly terrain with my two kids. Perodua hasn’t skimped on safety features at all—this is far more conscientious than cars in the same price range!
