The B-segment hatchback has always been a key battleground in the Malaysian market. Consumers value both the economic aspect of daily commuting as well as practicality and safety features—after all, this is the first car for many families. The 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G, as the core variant of the lineup, offers several active safety features as standard for under RM50,000, which is quite a rare offering in this segment. In this test drive, we focus on its static experience, performance, and everyday practicality to see if it can continue its reputation as the "people's car."

From the exterior, the 2023 Myvi 1.3 G retains the family design language with overall smooth lines that appear rounded but not bulky. The front's large lower grille, paired with chrome trims, enhances the horizontal visual width; LED headlights are standard, with sharp styling and high recognition when illuminated, appearing more spirited than the previous halogen lamps. The side profile features a waistline running from the front to the rear, complemented by 14-inch alloy wheels (though not large in size, the style is much more refined than steel wheels), resulting in well-proportioned aesthetics. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights echoing the headlights, while the black plastic trim under the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. It's worth mentioning that the body panel gaps are even, and the paint quality is above average for vehicles in this price range.

Inside, the Myvi 1.3 G's interior layout is clear and practical. The dashboard uses hard plastic materials but features textured finishing to avoid looking cheap. The air conditioning section has manual single-zone controls but comes with digital display and memory functions, making adjustments intuitive and convenient. A multifunction steering wheel is standard, with the left-side buttons controlling volume, track changes, and phone answering, while the right side switches the instrument panel displays, making everyday use seamless. The instrument cluster is a backlit analog design with speedometer and tachometer that are easy to read. A small screen in the middle provides basic information like fuel consumption and mileage. The seats are fabric, with manual adjustment available for the front; the seat pads and backrests offer decent support, ensuring comfort over long periods. The rear seats are split-folding 60:40, with a moderate backrest angle. A 175cm-tall passenger sitting in the rear would have about a fist's worth of legroom and sufficient headroom without hitting the ceiling. In terms of storage, the door panels' compartments can hold two 500ml water bottles, while a small tray below the dashboard provides space for phones. The armrest box also has enough space for small items. The trunk capacity is 277L, which is enough for groceries or two carry-on suitcases. Folding down the rear seats provides additional space for carrying larger items occasionally.

As for performance, the Myvi 1.3 G is equipped with a 1.3L naturally aspirated engine, producing a maximum output of 95PS and a peak torque of 121Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. In practice, the power response at start-up feels brisk; pressing the accelerator results in noticeable acceleration, making it suitable for urban driving and overtaking. While mid-to-high range acceleration is not particularly strong, the speed increase up to 80km/h is sufficient. On highways, overtaking requires pressing the accelerator harder, causing the CVT to simulate gear shifts and increase the RPM to over 4000rpm. At this point, engine noise becomes somewhat noticeable but remains within an acceptable range. Two driving modes are available: Normal and Eco. In Eco mode, throttle response is softer, making it more suitable for daily commutes and slightly improving fuel efficiency. The official combined fuel consumption is 4.5L/100km. During our week-long test drive, with equal parts city and highway driving, the actual fuel consumption was approximately 5.2L/100km, which aligns with expectations.

In terms of handling, the Myvi 1.3 G features MacPherson independent suspension in the front and torsion beam non-independent suspension at the rear. While driving in the city, the suspension can filter out most small bumps, and the vibrations when going over speed bumps are not too stiff; on winding roads, the body roll is well-controlled, the steering wheel has moderate weight, and the direction is quite precise, making it easy to drive. The braking performance is stable, with a linear pedal feel, and the stopping distance meets the standards for vehicles of this class. In terms of noise control, wind noise and road noise are barely noticeable at speeds below 60 km/h. However, once the speed exceeds 80 km/h, wind noise starts to come in from the A-pillars but doesn't affect in-car conversations.

Safety features are a major highlight of the Myvi 1.3 G. It comes standard with ABS anti-lock braking, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and an autonomous emergency braking system. Additionally, there are 4 airbags and seatbelt reminders for all seats. These features are not commonly found in B-segment models of the same price range, especially the active safety features, which provide extra security during daily driving. The reverse sensors are also standard, making them very practical for new drivers.

Overall, the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G has very obvious advantages: it is affordable, well-equipped with safety features, fuel-efficient, and practical in terms of space. Compared to its competitor, the Proton Iriz, it offers richer active safety features and has lower fuel consumption. Compared to the Honda Jazz, it has a more competitive pricing and offers better value for money. This car is suitable for families focusing on practicality and safety, especially those with a budget of around 50,000 MYR who need a vehicle for daily commuting and occasional family outings. If you're looking for a reliable, hassle-free, and well-balanced B-segment hatchback, the Myvi 1.3 G is a great choice.

Pros
Safety configuration is practical and sensitive, with functions like automatic braking and lane departure warning effectively reducing risks
Interior layout is clear and practical, with designs such as digital air conditioning panels and multifunctional steering wheels making operation convenient
Fabric seats are suitable for Malaysia's hot weather, they do not get uncomfortably hot and are highly practical
Cons
The interior is mostly made of hard plastic materials. The door panels and center console have average texture, lacking soft padding design.
The 1.3L naturally aspirated engine feels slightly underpowered, making overtaking challenging on long slopes or when fully loaded at high speed.
The brightness of the LED headlights is average, with significant blind spots when driving on rural roads at night.

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G, having driven it in Malaysia for more than half a year, I have the most say about the interior and safety features! Rating the interior 4 stars is quite reasonable — it’s generally a practical design. The layout of the buttons on the center console is very clear. For example, the digital panel for air-conditioning adjustments is so straightforward that even my wife, who’s not very familiar with cars, can spot it at a glance. The seats are fabric; while not as premium as leather, they’re actually more considerate in Malaysia’s hot weather because fabric doesn’t get as scorching to sit on. However, there’s a small downside: the door panels and some parts of the center console are still hard plastic, which doesn’t feel very refined. Adding a bit more soft padding would be better, especially since these areas are frequently touched when getting in and out of the car. Safety deserves full marks! On Malaysia’s highways, where cars often suddenly switch lanes, there was one time on the North-South Expressway when the car in front braked suddenly, and Myvi’s automatic emergency braking stopped me just in time — it was a heart-stopping moment, but truly a lifesaver! There’s also lane departure warning; when I feel drowsy during long-distance drives, the steering wheel vibrates to alert me. With four airbags throughout the car and ISOFIX connectors, I feel very assured bringing my kid along. My family lives in Johor Bahru, and we need to pass through the Second Link every day. Thanks to these safety features, they work very well at low speeds in traffic jams, and I don’t have to worry about minor collisions at all. Overall, having these safety features at this price range is such great value. While the interior has some minor flaws, its practicality is top-notch, making it a perfect family car!

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G, I’ve been driving it for almost half a year, and its daily performance in Malaysia really fits my needs! Let’s start with safety: I’d rate it 4 stars because the basic features are solid enough—4 airbags, vehicle stability control, and lane departure warning are all included. During Kuala Lumpur's peak hours, the forward collision warning occasionally alerts me, helping me avoid a few minor risks when distracted. However, compared to the higher-end version, it lacks side curtain airbags. If those could be added, it would be perfect, but for daily family use, this setup is more than sufficient. Performance absolutely gets a full score! The 1.3L naturally aspirated engine paired with CVT is excellent for local roads—during Kuala Lumpur’s traffic jams, it starts smoothly without any jerking. On weekends when driving up the mid-hills of Genting, it maintains stability even at 4000 RPM, and the 11.5-second acceleration is more than adequate for urban overtaking. The fuel efficiency is a pleasant surprise. For my regular commuting coupled with occasional highway trips, it averages just 4.8L/100km, which is even a bit better than the official figures. With a 36L fuel tank, I can drive over 700 kilometers on a full tank, reducing the need for frequent refueling. The interior deserves a 5-star rating too! Even though this is the entry-level version, the details are very considerate—the manual air conditioning comes with digital display and memory function, which means I don’t need to reset the temperature every time when it’s over 30°C in Kuala Lumpur. The multifunction steering wheel allows control of music and calls, eliminating the need to look down at the screen during traffic. The rear seats can be folded 60:40, which makes it convenient on weekends to buy small cabinets in Klang Valley. The 277L trunk fits a stroller and two backpacks just right. Though made of plastic, the construction isn’t rough, and everything feels comfortable for daily use. All in all, for under 50,000 MYR, such performance is truly worth it for an ordinary family like ours!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G for almost half a year, I genuinely feel this car is perfect for Malaysia! Let's first talk about its appearance—absolutely a 5 out of 5! The newly designed LED headlights are particularly sharp, and the car body lines are smoother than the old model. Every time I park at the LRT station or near the market, people ask me if it's a brand-new car—after all, in a Kuala Lumpur filled with older cars, this beauty really stands out. In terms of performance, I’d give it another 5 out of 5! Although it's a naturally aspirated 1.3L engine, it's incredibly smooth to follow traffic in KL's congested roads, and the CVT gearbox has no jerks at all. Last week, I drove to Genting Highlands, and the climbing power was sufficient—passing other cars wasn’t a problem. The most surprising part is the fuel consumption—the official 4.5L/100km is no exaggeration. For my daily commute on Federal Highway, with traffic jams and the air conditioning on, the fuel consumption is just around 5L. The 36L fuel tank costs only about RM60 to fill up and can last for over a week—it’s incredibly economical! I’d give the interior a 4 out of 5, mainly due to the plastic feel, especially on the dashboard and door panels, which feel a bit hard. However, the features are practical enough, with a multifunction steering wheel and digital air conditioning. The rear 60:40 split-fold seats were convenient when I helped a friend transport small appliances before—it all fit in. Overall, I’m still quite satisfied. In conclusion, being able to buy such a well-balanced car for less than 50,000 ringgit, I sincerely recommend it to friends commuting in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.3 G
As the owner of the 2023 Myvi 1.3 G, having driven it for nearly half a year now, overall, I feel it's definitely worth the price! Let me start with the performance. During rush hour traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, the CVT gearbox is very smooth, and there's no jerky feeling when stepping on the accelerator, making it very easy to follow the car ahead. However, since it's a 1.3L naturally aspirated engine, when encountering long slopes on the LDP highway or when fully loaded with five people and luggage, you need to accelerate a bit earlier for overtaking as the power feels slightly sluggish. The official 11.5-second acceleration claim is quite accurate. It's enough for city driving, but the high-speed burst power is average. A 4-star rating feels very reasonable. As for safety, I'm quite satisfied. It rains a lot in Malaysia, and there was a time on the North-South Highway when another car suddenly changed lanes. The forward collision warning immediately alerted me, and since I reacted a bit slower, the automatic braking helped reduce speed for me. It was a close call, and I was terrified! When driving on the LDP expressway, the lane departure warning is also very sensitive; if I occasionally get distracted and cross the line, it quickly reminds me. However, one time when I was driving on a village road at night, I felt that the brightness of the LED headlights was average, and there was a noticeable blind spot when turning. If they could be brighter, it would be even better. A 4-star rating is just right. The safety features are practical, but there's still room for improvement in the details.
