In the Malaysian B-segment hatchback market, the Perodua Myvi has always been a popular choice among family users and young office workers—after all, it strikes a balance between practicality, fuel efficiency, and price. The 2023 Myvi 1.5 AV, as the top variant of the series, stands out by introducing advanced safety features that were previously only available in mid-to-high-end models to this segment, while still maintaining Myvi’s trademark high cost-effectiveness. In this test drive, I mainly want to see whether its actual performance in terms of power and space meets daily needs, and whether the newly added safety features are truly practical.

The exterior of the 2023 Myvi 1.5 AV continues the family-oriented design but looks more refined in detail. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with a black honeycomb-patterned insert. The sharp-shaped LED headlights are connected to a chrome trim along the upper edge of the grille, enhancing overall recognition. The side profile is smooth, with 15-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels featuring a simple design, paired with 185/55 R15 tires for a well-proportioned look. At the rear, the LED taillights are connected by a chrome strip running across the top, while the lower bumper includes black anti-scratch cladding. Overall, the style leans towards youthful sportiness, while maintaining the compactness typical of B-segment models.

Stepping inside, the interior features a predominantly black color scheme. The dashboard is a combination of soft-touch plastic and piano black trim. While the materials are not luxurious, the craftsmanship is more consistent. The top of the dashboard houses a 6.9-inch touchscreen that supports Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring, offering decent operational smoothness. The instrument panel is an electroluminescent analog display, which is clear and directly shows information such as RPM, speed, and fuel consumption. In terms of features, the 1.5 AV version comes standard with keyless entry/start, automatic LED headlights, manual front air-conditioning (with digital control and memory function), rear air vents, six airbags, adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, among other safety features. These safety configurations are quite comprehensive for models in the same segment.

In terms of space, the vehicle measures 3895mm in length, 1735mm in width, and 1515mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2500mm, which fits the standard dimensions for the B-segment. The front row offers ample space, with a 175cm tall passenger having a fist’s worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear row space is moderate, with passengers of the same height getting two fingers of knee room and one fist of headroom, which is adequate for daily family use. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, and when folded down, the trunk capacity can be expanded from 277L to accommodate larger suitcases or baby strollers. In terms of storage space, both the front and rear door panels have cup holders, there is a phone storage slot below the dashboard, and the front central armrest box has moderate capacity, offering good practicality.

The 2023 Myvi 1.5 AV is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power output of 76kW (103PS) and a peak torque of 137N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. During actual driving, the start is relatively quick, and the low RPM torque output is sufficient for urban commuting. Acceleration is smooth and the CVT transmission avoids obvious jerks. When switched to sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, and during overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply raises the engine speed above 4000rpm, making the power delivery more direct. However, during high-speed acceleration, the limitations of the naturally aspirated engine become apparent, as the power reserves in the higher range are not particularly strong.

In terms of handling, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension is tuned for comfort. During daily driving on smooth roads, the chassis performs well in filtering out bumps. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations without noticeable residual tremors. While cornering, the steering is adequately precise with minimal dead zones, and the body roll is within the normal range for B-Segment models. The overall driving experience is stable. The braking performance is standard, with a combination of front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes. The brake pedal travel is moderate, and the braking force is released linearly, which is sufficient for daily use.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 4.7L/100km. During actual test drives, urban congestion saw fuel consumption at around 5.5-6L/100km, while highway drives ranged between 4.2-4.5L/100km. The overall fuel efficiency meets expectations, making it economical for family usage.

Regarding ride comfort, the interior noise control is decent. Below 60km/h, wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable. At highway speeds above 100km/h, wind noise increases gradually but does not affect normal conversation. The seats are made of fabric with moderate support and wrapping, ensuring no significant fatigue during long rides. The ACC adaptive cruise control is particularly convenient for highway use, as it automatically follows other vehicles, reducing the burden of long-distance driving.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV lie in its comprehensive safety features, smooth power output, and economical fuel consumption. Its space offerings meet the needs of routine family usage. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the Proton Iriz 1.6 Premium, the Myvi 1.5 AV has more extensive safety features and a more competitive price (the RM59,900 price tag is on the lower-middle side within the B-Segment).

This car is suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and safety features, or for young professionals who have just started working. It meets the needs of daily commutes and weekend family outings, while its low fuel consumption and the 5-year/150,000 km warranty help reduce long-term maintenance costs. If you don’t require particularly strong performance and place more importance on balance and cost-effectiveness, the Myvi 1.5 AV is a solid choice.

In summary, the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV is a well-rounded car with no particularly obvious shortcomings. Its safety features and practicality are its key highlights, making it one of the most worth considering models in the B-Segment market.

Pros
The interior texture is great, the center console with soft plastic is comfortable, and the touch screen is responsive and smooth
The seat fabric is breathable and not stuffy, manually adjustable but of good quality, suitable for Malaysia's hot weather
The rear 60:40 split seats are practical, offering high space utilization and convenience for placing luggage or items
Cons
The side profile lines have little difference from the old model, and the wheel size is small (15 inches), making the appearance less sporty
The interior contains a lot of hard plastic, and the door panels and dashboard have an average texture, lacking detailed touches such as soft armrests
The safety system occasionally has false positives, such as lane departure warnings mistakenly identifying motorcycles, and the stability system intervenes slowly

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV
As the owner of the 2023 Myvi 1.5 AV, after driving it for almost half a year, the most surprising aspect is still the interior! The first feeling when stepping inside is the "premium touch." The soft plastic on the dashboard feels very comfortable, not as hard as the old version. Especially the 6.9-inch touchscreen, which is very responsive, making Bluetooth music playback and navigation super convenient during traffic jams in KL, with no lag at all. Although the seats are manually adjustable, the fabric quality is excellent—breathable and not stuffy. Even in Malaysia's recent weather, where temperatures reach over 30 degrees, driving for long hours doesn't make you feel sticky. The 60:40 split rear seats are also very practical. When going to Genting with family on weekends, you can easily fit a stroller or luggage, making great use of space. As for the exterior, I’d give it a 4 out of 5. The new LED headlights and daytime running lights are indeed much sharper than the old version, especially when driving at night—they are highly recognizable. However, the side profile doesn’t feel much different from the previous generation. Perhaps it’s to retain the classic Myvi design? That said, everyone has their own preferences. My wife actually finds it quite appealing, saying that it’s easy to spot in a parking lot. Overall, the interior truly exceeded expectations, and although the exterior isn't particularly stunning, it’s still good-looking enough. As an everyday car, it’s more than sufficient!

As the owner of the 2023 Myvi 1.5 AV for nearly half a year, let me share two of my most direct impressions! The exterior deserves a solid 4/5—The new model is much more refined than the old one. The LED headlights and smoked taillights are highly identifiable during nighttime in KL city, and the body lines are sleeker compared to the old version. Parking it near the LRT station even gets a fair amount of attention. But honestly speaking, the side profile still carries a bit of that "mini-van" vibe. It would look sportier if the wheels were one size bigger (currently 15 inches), a minor regret on this otherwise stylish design~ Performance, however, gets a full-on 5/5! We all know Malaysia’s road conditions—slow-moving traffic jams on Jalan Ampang during morning rush hour, or the winding roads to Genting Highlands on weekends, it handles them all. The 1.5L NA+CVT setup may not be "explosive" in acceleration, but it’s exceptionally smooth when following traffic in the city, perfectly proportional to how much you press the accelerator without any jerking. Going uphill to Genting, it didn’t feel underpowered either, maintaining a steady 3000 RPM. The most surprising part is its fuel efficiency. My daily commute is a mix of highways and city driving, and the average is just above 5L. That’s even better than the official claims! Given Malaysia’s rising fuel prices, this fuel efficiency is absolutely a win! To summarize: the exterior is practical and decent-looking but not striking, while its performance perfectly addresses the pain points of Malaysian drivers—easy to drive, fuel-efficient, and capable of handling complex road conditions effortlessly. As a family car, it’s truly flawless!

As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I’m growing to love it more and more! Let me praise the exterior first — it absolutely deserves a 5-star rating! The LED headlights at the front look especially sharp, and the body lines turn heads even while stuck in traffic in KL city, especially with the metallic blue I chose. Under the sunlight, the finish looks incredible, totally not like a car priced at 60,000 MYR. The interior gets 4 stars. There is a slight plastic feel overall, but the design is very practical — the 6.9-inch touchscreen in the center console responds quickly, the manual air conditioning with memory function means I don’t have to adjust the temperature every time I get in; this is fantastic in KL’s 35-degree weather. With the rear seats split 60:40 and folded down, taking my mom to Klang last week to stock up on Chinese New Year goods was no problem — we fit three large boxes without an issue. It’s just that there’s a bit too much hard plastic; if they could add a soft armrest, that would be perfect. As for safety, I’d also give it 4 stars, especially since the 6 airbags + ACC adaptive cruise control are such great features! Last time on the North-South Expressway, there was a sudden traffic jam, and the autonomous emergency braking kicked in, stopping the car instantly. It gave me a fright, but it also made me feel at ease. The lane departure warning was particularly useful when driving long distances on the winding roads in Penang. However, it occasionally misjudges motorcycles on the side of the road, but lowering the sensitivity fixes it. Overall, having such comprehensive safety features at this price point is really reassuring for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV
As the owner of the 2023 Myvi 1.5 AV, having driven it for almost half a year, the thing I'm most satisfied with is its appearance! Myvis are everywhere in Malaysia, but the design of the new model is truly eye-catching — the LED headlights look sharp like little eagle eyes, and the body lines are more rounded and smooth compared to the old model. Especially the side waistline, it looks particularly textured under the sunshine in KL city. I chose the metallic gray color, and every time I park at the LRT station's parking lot, I feel it looks much better than the older Myvi models parked next to it. My friends always say first thing when they see my car, "Wow, the new Myvi is so much better-looking!" When it comes to safety, I feel quite assured, especially since it's Perodua's top-spec model. Last time in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, the car in front of me suddenly braked, and my car immediately triggered the forward collision warning and even applied the brakes automatically. I almost had a rear-end collision and was scared out of my wits at the time, but thankfully, the feature was there. When cruising on the North-South Expressway, the ACC cruise control makes it much more convenient. The lane departure warning reminds me to stay in my lane, and the 6 airbags offered at this price point are really impressive. However, once when I was driving on the highway in Johor Bahru on a rainy day, I felt that the vehicle stability control took a bit longer to kick in — perhaps I was driving too fast? But overall, the safety features are more than enough for Malaysia's road conditions, and I think giving it a 4 out of 5 is reasonable. In conclusion, as a daily commuter and a weekend family car for trips to Genting, the Myvi’s appearance and safety performance have not let me down!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV
As the owner of a 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV for almost half a year, let me first praise the exterior — it’s a solid 5 out of 5! The roads in Malaysia are filled with Myvi cars, but this new design completely breaks away from the "common car" vibe: the large chrome grille on the front paired with the LED headlights looks particularly sharp when driving on the LDP highway during the day; the side body lines running from the front to the rear, combined with the 15-inch wheels, often catch the eyes of passers-by when parked in a Klang Valley shopping mall. My favorite is the rear's through-style taillights — when stuck in traffic at Jalan Ampang at night, their unique design is highly recognizable, and my friends can spot my car from afar. In terms of aesthetics, this car is definitely a winner! The interior deserves a 4 out of 5, mainly because it’s "sufficient but with minor shortcomings." When taking my family to Genting, the manually adjustable front seats can be positioned comfortably, but long drives can still get a bit tiring; the 6.9-inch touchscreen on the center console is pretty responsive, and pairing it with CarPlay makes navigating to Petaling Street convenient, though there’s quite a bit of plastic used — such as the hard plastic on the door panels and the dashboard, which feels somewhat lacking in texture. However, the details are thoughtful: the front air-conditioning comes with digital display and memory functions, and on a 35-degree day in Kuala Lumpur, even though it doesn’t have remote start, manually turning it on cools down the car quickly and the air conditioning is powerful; the rear seats fold down 60:40, and last time I helped a friend transport some small furniture, it all fit in without issue — big points for practicality. Overall, the interior is "functional over fashionable;" if there was more use of soft-touch materials, it would be perfect!
