Specs

The B-segment hatchback market has always been a battleground for family users and young buyers locally. The Perodua Myvi, known as the "national car" that has consistently topped sales charts, always stirs interest with every update. The 2023 Myvi 1.5 X returns this time with improved safety features and optimized fuel consumption. Priced at RM 50,900, can it maintain the advantages of its predecessors? We got our hands on the actual car and conducted a comprehensive test, from static to dynamic performance, to see if it can still hold its position as the benchmark in its class.

In terms of appearance, the 2023 Myvi 1.5 X continues the family-style design but looks more refined in details. The front features a large trapezoidal grille adorned with chrome accents, flanked by sharp-looking LED headlights that come standard with an automatic headlight function, making daily use more convenient. The side profile has smooth lines, and the 15-inch wheels with 185/55 R15 tires provide balanced proportions without obvious signs of being budget-oriented. At the rear, the LED taillights echo the style of the front, while the black trim on the lower rear bumper adds a sporty touch, giving it a mid-to-high-level distinctiveness among its class.

Stepping inside, the interior design leans toward functionality, with a simple layout for the dashboard and primary control areas centralized. Most materials used are hard plastics, but the seams are even and do not feel flimsy. The standard multifunction steering wheel supports volume adjustment and call answering, offering a user-friendly experience. The instrument panel uses a backlit analog design with clear displays for essential information like water temperature, fuel level, and RPM, making it easy to read at a glance. The manual single-zone air conditioning system in the center console comes with digital controls and memory settings, allowing intuitive adjustments, which front passengers can quickly adapt to. The seats are manually adjustable and upholstered in fabric, providing good support with no noticeable fatigue even during long periods of sitting.

Regarding space, the dimensions of the vehicle are 3895mm×1735mm×1515mm with a wheelbase of 2500mm, which is standard for a B-segment vehicle. The front row offers ample space, with a height of 175cm for passengers leaving about one fist's worth of headroom after seat adjustments. The rear legroom has around two fists of space, and headroom is about one fist, making it sufficient for daily family use. The rear seats offer a 60:40 split-folding design, expanding the trunk volume from 277L to a much larger space when folded, which makes it convenient for strollers or luggage. Storage compartments within the cabin are abundant; the door storage slots can fit two bottles of mineral water, and the center armrest box along with the glove compartment provide sufficient space for daily use. Rear passengers also benefit from an air conditioning vent, further enhancing comfort levels.

In terms of power, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 76kW (103PS) and a maximum torque of 137N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During actual driving, the power response is smooth when starting from a stop, with no noticeable delay. It is easy to follow traffic or get going in city conditions. During acceleration, the CVT transmission offers linear performance. When the accelerator is pressed hard, the RPM stays around 6000, providing sustained power output. While overtaking requires some planning ahead, it's more than sufficient for daily driving needs. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 10.2 seconds, which is average among naturally aspirated cars in the same class.

In terms of handling, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When dealing with commonly seen speed bumps or uneven roads in urban areas, the suspension can filter out most of the minor vibrations and the car body does not experience noticeable jolts. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, the steering is precise with minimal slack, making it quite agile for daily driving. Fuel consumption performance is impressive. We drove 50km each in urban and highway conditions, achieving an average fuel consumption of about 5.2L/100km, which is close to the official figure of 4.7L/100km, highlighting its excellent fuel economy.

Safety features are the highlight of the Myvi 1.5 X in this update. It comes standard with vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, and four airbags, as well as seatbelt reminders for all seats. Its safety performance ranks among the top level within the same price range. During daily driving, the lane departure warning provides timely alerts when the vehicle drifts out of its lane, while the autonomous emergency braking effectively prevents rear-end collisions when following at low speeds, significantly enhancing driving safety.

In terms of driving comfort, noise control is well-handled. When driving at 60km/h in urban areas, tire noise and engine noise are not noticeable; at 100km/h on highways, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect in-car conversations. The seats provide good support and wrap-around comfort, ensuring that long periods of sitting do not induce fatigue.

To sum up, the core strengths of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X lie in its balanced performance, outstanding fuel economy, and comprehensive safety features. Compared to the similarly priced Proton Iriz 1.6 Standard, the Myvi 1.5 X offers more complete safety features, lower fuel consumption, and a minimal price difference, making it an excellent value for money. It is suitable for families prioritizing practicality and safety, and can effortlessly handle daily commutes, school runs, or short weekend trips. For young buyers with limited budgets who seek reliability and fuel efficiency, it is also a great choice.

Overall, the 2023 Myvi 1.5 X continues its pragmatic positioning as a "national car." It does not boast flashy designs but leads its class in safety, fuel efficiency, and space, making it a very suitable hatchback for the local market.

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X, having driven it in Malaysia for more than half a year, the two main things I'd like to talk about are the exterior and safety. Giving the exterior a 4-star rating is really fair—it features a large front grille paired with LED headlights, which provide good recognizability when stuck in traffic in KL city, especially at night with the automatic headlights on. The brightness of the lights is sufficient and looks dynamic. However, the rear design is somewhat ordinary. Last time, when I parked next to a friend's older Myvi model, it was hard to tell the difference in the tail light without a closer look. It would be nice to see a sportier spoiler or more unique lighting design, especially since younger people nowadays prefer more personalized designs. When it comes to safety, it deserves a full score! Everyone knows how Malaysian roads are—cars suddenly switching lanes on the highway and lots of motorbikes in the city. Once, while following too closely on Jalan Ampang, the forward collision warning suddenly alerted me, and before I could react, the autonomous emergency braking engaged, bringing the car to a stop—almost hitting the taxi in front. Thinking back on it still gives me chills. Additionally, with features like 4 airbags, lane departure warning system, all as standard, it’s very reassuring when going out with kids. The ISOFIX anchors make installing a child seat super secure. Driving long distances to places like Genting on winding mountain roads, the vehicle stability control works really well—it feels stable during turns, and there’s no sense of skidding at all, providing a strong sense of safety. Overall, while the exterior may not be particularly stunning, the safety features really offer peace of mind, making it fully sufficient as a family car!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I genuinely feel I made the right choice! I give the exterior a full 5 stars—there’s absolutely nothing to fault. The new LED headlights look especially sharp, and the body lines are more streamlined compared to the old model. Every time I park next to an LRT station, people always take a second look. It really stands out in Kuala Lumpur’s traffic. The interior deserves 4 stars because the overall quality is quite good. The digital air conditioning panel on the center console is convenient to use, and the multifunction steering wheel feels very intuitive. However, the plastic materials are somewhat obvious, especially the hard plastic on the passenger side. If it were softer, it would be perfect. For safety, I have to give it full marks! Malaysia gets a lot of rainy days, and on the highway, I often encounter cars that switch lanes suddenly. Its lane departure warning and forward collision warning respond very quickly. There was one time on the North-South Expressway when I nearly rear-ended the car in front, but the autonomous emergency braking immediately stopped the car for me. It gave me a scare, but it also made me completely trust it. With four airbags and vehicle stability control as standard across all variants, even taking the family on the hilly roads to Genting Highlands feels especially stable and provides maximum peace of mind!

Here is the translated content: As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X, after driving it for three months in Malaysia, what surprised me the most is the interior! The first feeling when sitting in the car is "worth every penny" — though the plastic on the center console isn't high-end material, the workmanship is solid, and the seams are even, totally unlike a car that costs only over 50,000 MYR. I have to send my kid to school every day, and the 60:40 split rear seat is incredibly practical. Last week, I went to IKEA to buy small furniture, folded down half of the seat, and managed to fit a folding table without needing to call for a Grab truck. There's also the single-zone air conditioning with memory function. My wife and I have different body temperatures, so every time we get in the car, we just press the memory button to adjust to our preferred temperature. It's particularly hassle-free in Kuala Lumpur's 35-degree heat. As for the exterior, it's much better looking compared to the previous generation. The LED headlights are very striking in the evening traffic on Jalan Ampang, and the recognition is quite high. However, I think the chrome strip on the front is a bit too shiny; sometimes when the sunlight hits it directly, it reflects onto the windshield. If it could be made into a matte finish, it would be perfect — so I deduct one point for that. But overall, I'm still very satisfied. Several neighbors in the community have already asked me if it's the new Myvi!

As the owner of the 2023 Myvi 1.5 X, after driving it in Malaysia for almost half a year, what I’m most satisfied with are its safety features and interior design, which completely meet expectations for this price range! Starting with safety, a 4-star rating is very reasonable—features like ABS and vehicle stability control are all available as basic configurations, and it also comes standard with lane departure warning and forward collision warning. These are especially useful during rush hour commutes in Kuala Lumpur. There was one time the car in front braked suddenly, and the autonomous braking kicked in to slow me down. It gave me a fright but also a sense of reassurance. However, the one downside is that there are only 4 airbags. It would be perfect if side curtain airbags were added, especially considering Malaysia’s frequent rainy days and the occasional skidding on the highway. In terms of the interior, I’d also rate it a 4. The overall craftsmanship is much more refined compared to the previous generation. Although the center console uses hard plastic rather than soft-touch materials, the texture is finely crafted and doesn’t look cheap. Features like LED headlights and power-folding side mirrors are very generous at this price point. I particularly appreciate the manual air conditioning with digital display and memory function—it saves me from adjusting the temperature every time I get in. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats are also very practical. On weekends, when taking my family to Genting Highlands, folding down half of the rear seats easily makes space for a stroller and suitcase. The only slight regret is that the instrument cluster is still a traditional backlit analog design. A fully digital display would enhance the tech feel, but considering the price of just over RM50k, it’s totally acceptable! All in all, as a daily commuter and family car, the safety and interior performance of the Myvi 1.5 X have exceeded my expectations, making it feel particularly reliable on Malaysian roads!

Owner of 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X
As the owner of the 2023 Perodua Myvi 1.5 X, I’ve been driving it for almost half a year, and I genuinely feel this car is super practical in Malaysia! First, let’s talk about the exterior. I chose the metallic grey color, and every time I park it near the LRT station or Pavilion, there are always people turning their heads for a second look — the large front grille paired with the LED headlights gives it a much more spirited appearance compared to the older model. The side profile also has a very sleek contour, nothing like a car priced at just over RM50,000. Giving it a full score of 5 isn’t an exaggeration at all! As for performance, I’d rate it 4 out of 5, and it’s perfectly adequate for daily driving. You know how roads in Malaysia are — Jalan Ampang is jam-packed during rush hour. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT is particularly smooth, making starts and stop-and-go traffic seamless without any jerks. On weekends, I take my family to Genting Highlands, and the hill start assist feature is a lifesaver, preventing the car from rolling back on steep inclines. However, once you go over 110 km/h on the highway, acceleration becomes a bit sluggish. Last time I drove to Penang, overtaking required pressing the accelerator pedal down quite early. But considering the price and fuel consumption (I’m getting around 5.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure but acceptable), I’m really satisfied with its performance!
