2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD Review

In the Malaysian C-segment SUV market, the Tesla Model Y has always been an inescapable option—it is not only a representative of the pure electric lineup but also one of the top choices for many family users transitioning from fuel vehicles to electric cars. The core selling points of the 2023 Model Y Long Range AWD are clear: long range, all-wheel drive, and Tesla's hallmark smart features. This test drive focuses on whether its dynamic performance meets everyday family needs, and whether its static experience keeps up with the upgrade trends of competitors in the same segment.
In terms of appearance, the Model Y continues Tesla's family-oriented minimalist style. The front lacks a traditional grille, relying on smooth lines and sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides to enhance recognition. When the daytime running lights are lit, they display the classic "willow leaf eyebrow" design, offering a clean and sharp visual effect. The side of the car reveals a standard crossover SUV profile, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, paired with 19-inch front tires and 21-inch rear tires for a well-balanced proportion. At the rear, the smoked LED taillight clusters adopt a through-type design, making them highly recognizable when illuminated at night. The rear bumper's diffuser design also adds a touch of sportiness. The overall design is free from excessive flourish, belonging to a timelessly stylish category.
Sitting inside the car, the interior still carries Tesla's signature minimalist style. The center console is almost devoid of physical buttons, with all functions concentrated on a 15-inch central touchscreen. The screen has high resolution and operates smoothly, with frequently used functions like air conditioning, navigation, and media easily accessible. In terms of materials, the center console and inner sides of the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by black trim, providing a texture that matches the price range. The seats are wrapped in leather, with front seats supporting electric adjustment. The side bolsters are moderate, ensuring comfort during long rides. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, and when folded, the trunk volume reaches up to 2,158L, which is more than enough for carrying strollers, suitcases, or other large items. In terms of space, the wheelbase of 2,891mm provides a spacious rear legroom. A passenger of 175cm sitting in the back will have about two fists of space between their knees and the front seat, along with one fist of headroom. Even with five passengers, it won't feel cramped. The rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB ports, showing attention to detail.
In terms of power, the 2023 Model Y Long Range AWD is equipped with front and rear dual motors, delivering a total system power of 450PS and total torque of 559N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5 seconds. On actual driving, the power response is very direct when starting, as stepping on the accelerator pedal delivers an evident push-back feeling. The mid-to-high range acceleration does not falter, and overtaking is as simple as pressing the pedal deeper for immediate power delivery. There are three driving modes to choose from: Comfort, Standard, and Sport. The Sport mode increases accelerator sensitivity, suitable for users seeking driving pleasure, while the Comfort mode focuses on smoothness, ideal for daily commuting.
The handling performance is worth mentioning. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the turning feels just right in terms of effort, so even female drivers won't find it heavy. The chassis uses a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension. Its tuning leans towards a taut yet resilient feel. When going over speed bumps, the suspension quickly filters out bumps without unnecessary rebounds. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and with the support of the all-wheel-drive system, stability is excellent. We tested its noise control, and at speeds below 60km/h, external noise is almost inaudible inside the car. When speed increases to 100km/h, wind and tire noise do emerge slightly but do not interfere with normal conversations. The energy recovery system comes in two modes: Standard and Low. In Standard mode, releasing the accelerator pedal provides a noticeable deceleration, making single-pedal operation almost possible, and once adapted, it can reduce brake usage. The Low mode is closer to the coasting feel of a fuel car, making it suitable for novice drivers transitioning to EVs.
In terms of range, the official pure electric range is 533km. We drove about half the distance on city roads and highways, with the air conditioning on the whole time and the energy recovery set to standard. The final range achievement rate was approximately 85%, and the power consumption was 15.2kWh per 100 kilometers, which met expectations. In fast charging mode, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while slow charging requires about 10 hours. This fully meets the needs of daily commuting and short-distance travel.
In terms of safety features, the Model Y Long Range AWD comes standard with 8 airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic braking, among other functions. The HUD head-up digital display and digital dashboard also allow the driver to stay updated on vehicle information at all times, ensuring safety.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Model Y Long Range AWD lie in its long range, powerful performance output, and comprehensive intelligent configurations. Compared to competitors like the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz EQC, it offers a more affordable price, longer range, and more spacious interior, making it stand out in terms of cost performance. This car is suitable for families who prioritize range and space, as well as young people who seek technological features and driving enjoyment. If you're considering a well-rounded all-electric SUV, the Model Y Long Range AWD deserves a spot on your list.
