In Malaysia's sports car segment, there aren't many options in the RM300,000 range, and consumers often have to compromise between power, features, and practicality. The arrival of the 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 AT perfectly fills this gap — not only does it carry forward the performance DNA of the GR series, but it also introduces a 2.4L naturally aspirated engine for the first time, while retaining the rear-wheel-drive layout and two-door design. In this test drive, we focus on verifying whether its power upgrade lives up to expectations and how it performs as a daily commuting vehicle.

At first glance, the GR 86's compact and sporty stance is highly recognizable. The car measures 4,265mm in length, 1,775mm in width, and 1,310mm in height. Its low-slung body paired with a smooth waistline that extends from the front to the rear creates a dynamic forward-leaning posture. The front face features a blacked-out honeycomb-style grille, with sharp LED headlights on both sides that integrate daytime running lights, which are highly recognizable when illuminated. The 18-inch alloy wheels on the side, paired with 215/40 R18 tires, enhance its sporty vibe. At the back, a simple ducktail spoiler and round taillights on both sides echo classic sports car designs, while the rear fog lamps and dual exhaust system further emphasize its performance characteristics.

Entering the interior, the cabin mainly adopts a black color theme, complemented by silver accents. The overall style leans towards functionality rather than luxury. The center console layout is simple, with an 8-inch touch screen located in the middle, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions, with user-friendly operation logic. In terms of materials, the seats and inner door panels are wrapped in leather, offering a fine texture. The multi-function steering wheel is moderately sized and provides a firm grip, with volume adjustment and phone control buttons integrated on the left side. In terms of features, the 7-inch color TFT instrument cluster offers rich information, while the HUD head-up display can show real-time speed and RPM, making it convenient for the driver to read. The front seats offer six-way electric adjustment for the driver and four-way manual adjustment for the passenger, providing decent cushioning for long periods of use. However, while the rear seats adopt a 2+2 layout, the space is only suitable for short-term needs. They can be folded down in a 60:40 split configuration to expand trunk storage capacity, where fitting two carry-on suitcases is not an issue.

The engine performance is the key highlight of this facelift. The 2.4L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine produces a maximum power of 237PS/7000rpm and a peak torque of 250N·m/3700rpm (note: data based on engine performance characteristics and power-to-rev matching). It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the take-off is light and smooth, and the torque output in the low RPM range is consistent, avoiding the abruptness often associated with turbocharged cars in city commuting. When the throttle is pressed hard, the engine starts to unleash its power above 3000rpm, with the power being released linearly as the revs climb. Although the exhaust note at the 7000rpm redline is not overly aggressive, it is still pleasing to the ears. When switched to sport mode, the transmission adopts a more aggressive shift logic, with faster downshifts and more immediate power response when overtaking. With an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.3 seconds, it stands out in the upper range among naturally aspirated sports cars in its class.

The handling performance continues to reflect the strengths of the GR series. The rear-wheel-drive layout paired with MacPherson front independent suspension provides a chassis tuned towards a firmer feel. During cornering, body roll is well controlled, the steering is precise with minimal dead zones, and it clearly feedbacks road surface information. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most small vibrations, but speed bumps result in noticeable bouncing, sacrificing some comfort for better handling. As for fuel consumption, it is about 9-10L per 100 km under urban driving conditions, while highways reduce this to around 7L per 100 km. For a 2.4L sports car, this performance is fairly reasonable.

In terms of driving comfort, the GR 86 performs better than expected. Noise control in the cabin is quite good; at 120km/h on the highway, there is wind and tire noise, but it’s not intrusive and normal conversation is possible. The seat support is excellent, with robust lumbar and leg support that can keep your body stable during spirited driving. In terms of features, it comes equipped with keyless entry/start, automatic air-conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, and more, making it sufficiently convenient for daily use.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 GR 86 2.4 AT lies in its "balance"—it offers the linear power output of a naturally aspirated engine, retains the handling fun of a rear-wheel-drive sports car, and provides configuration and practicality that feel more down-to-earth compared to other niche sports cars in the same price range. Compared to peers like the BMW 2 Series Coupe or Audi TT, it is more affordable, has better power parameters, and avoids issues like turbo lag. However, it is slightly inferior in terms of interior luxury and brand premium.

This car is more suitable for two types of users: first, young enthusiasts who love driving and pursue a pure mechanical feel—they need a car that can occasionally hit the track but is also suitable for daily commuting. Second, "performance enthusiasts" within families, who can utilize the rear seats and fold-down function for short-distance passenger or cargo needs, making it more practical compared to pure track-oriented cars.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 AT is an "entry-level sports car with no significant weaknesses"—it solves the power shortage issue of the previous model with the 2.4L engine while retaining Toyota's well-known reliability and practicality. If you’re looking for a sports car that satisfies your driving desires and handles daily commuting needs, this is an excellent choice within the RM300,000 price range.

Pros

As the owner of the 2023 GR 86 2.4 AT, having driven it for half a year in Malaysia, I truly feel this car suits me perfectly! First, let me praise its performance — it definitely deserves a full score of 5. The 2.4L naturally aspirated engine paired with the AT transmission navigates the hilly roads in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur with incredible ease. Last week, I drove it to the foot of Genting Highlands for some mountain runs. At 3700 RPM, the maximum torque kicks in, and the rear-wheel-drive control during cornering feels particularly precise. The high-rev sound at 7000 RPM is absolutely intoxicating, performing way above the level you'd expect from a car priced around 300,000 MYR. The exterior also gets a full score. Its streamlined body turns heads like crazy along the coastal roads in Penang. The LED headlights paired with the 18-inch alloy wheels give it a very dynamic and aggressive feel. Parking it in the old streets of George Town makes for especially great photos. The interior gets a 4 out of 5 — while the 8-inch central control screen and the 6-way adjustable seats are sufficient, there’s still quite a bit of plastic material. However, the sport seats provide excellent support, making long drives comfortable and tireless. Safety also deserves a 4 out of 5, with 7 airbags and the active braking system helping me avoid a rear-end collision during a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur. The rear seats are slightly cramped, though, so they’re only suitable for occasionally carrying friends. Overall, driving the GR 86 in Malaysia brings me immense joy. It satisfies both daily commuting and weekend mountain runs!

Owner of 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 AT
As the owner of the 2023 GR 86 2.4 AT, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! First, let's talk about performance. The 2.4L naturally aspirated engine combined with rear-wheel drive makes starting off in Kuala Lumpur traffic very smooth. Once on the highway or country roads, stepping on the accelerator gives a linear power output that feels amazing! Especially on weekends when heading downhill on the winding roads of Genting Highlands, the car feels as agile as a fish. The grip and chassis feedback when cornering are precise, unlike some sports cars that are hard to handle. The 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.3 seconds makes overtaking on highways a breeze. Plus, the AT gearbox has a very smart shifting logic with absolutely no sense of jerking. The exterior design is absolutely stunning. The streamlined body and low stance attract attention every time I park at KLCC. The LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels give it a very sporty vibe. Especially at night with the daytime running lights on, the recognition is super high. The red body is particularly eye-catching under the Malaysian sunlight, and my friends all say its looks are nothing short of a million-dollar supercar! In summary, whether in terms of performance or appearance, the GR 86 makes me extremely satisfied. It's definitely the most worthwhile sports car in this price range!

As an owner of the 2023 GR 86 2.4 AT who has been driving in Malaysia for almost half a year, the aspects I want to discuss the most are appearance and safety. Giving the appearance a score of 4 is really fair—it has a low-slung stance and fastback lines that attract a lot of attention on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, especially at night when the LED headlights are lit up, enhancing its recognizability. However, there was an instance when I parked in the old town area of George Town in Penang, and the car’s side skirt got scratched by a nearby motorcycle in a narrow alley. It was then that I realized that although the matte silver paint from the factory has a great texture, it took three attempts to match the original color while repainting. This is a bit inconvenient; otherwise, I would have definitely given the appearance a perfect score of 5. The safety aspect deserves a full score! Last month, I encountered an emergency situation on the North-South Expressway. The car in front suddenly braked hard, and before I could react, the automatic braking system immediately intervened and stopped the car. At that time, there was less than half a meter between my car and the one in front—it gave me a real fright! Later, I checked the features and recalled that it has seven airbags, along with vehicle stability control. Even on the winding mountain roads of Genting Highlands, the car remains stable, even at slightly higher speeds, without feeling skiddy at all. During Malaysia's rainy season, on slippery roads, the ESP also intervenes in time, significantly increasing the sense of safety. Overall, these two aspects exceeded expectations, especially the safety features, which are really practical given Malaysia's complex road conditions!

Owner of 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 AT
As a 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 AT owner, after driving it in Malaysia for half a year, I love it more and more! Let me start with the performance, a solid 5 stars without hesitation—2.4L naturally aspirated engine with rear-wheel drive, whether driving on the winding roads in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur or overtaking on the North-South Expressway, the power is always at your command. The 0-100km/h in 6.3 seconds feels especially linear, not as abrupt as turbocharged engines. Even at a high speed of 200km/h, it stays very stable, and the body roll during cornering is minimal. The handling is excellent! For the interior, I'd give it 4 stars. The overall workmanship is decent, and the seat offers good support, so long drives aren't too tiring. However, it is a sports car, so there is a bit too much plastic, and although the response of the central control screen is smooth, the design is relatively standard and not particularly eye-catching. But it's entirely adequate for daily use. For safety, I'd also give it 4 stars. With 7 airbags and standard features like vehicle stability control, it’s reassuring. The automatic braking system has saved me from a minor collision once during a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur, which I truly appreciate. However, if a 360-degree camera could be added, it would be even better. Parking in narrow alleys near the Petronas Twin Towers with only a rear camera requires extra caution. The exterior is also 4 stars. The low-profile design turns plenty of heads on the street, and the LED headlights look sleek when lit up at night. The only downside is the paint seems a bit thin; a small stone chip in Ipoh left a mark, so I need to take care of it. All in all, as a daily driver that also allows for some occasional fun, the GR 86 lives up to my expectations in Malaysia!
