In today's Malaysian sports car market, rear-wheel-drive manual models with naturally aspirated engines larger than 2.0L are becoming increasingly rare. Many car enthusiasts are looking for a "pure driving experience" that balances daily driving comfort with driving pleasure. The 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 MT is targeted at this niche market. It not only upgrades to a 2.4L naturally aspirated engine to address the lack of low-end torque in the previous version but also retains the core fun of a manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive layout. In this test drive, we’ll see if it meets the expectations of driving enthusiasts.

The GR 86 exterior continues the classic proportions of a two-door sports car. Its dimensions – 4265mm in length, 1775mm in width, and 1310mm in height – make the body appear compact and low-profile, while the 2575mm wheelbase strikes a balance between agility and cabin space. The front end features a large trapezoidal lower grille, complemented by sharp LED daytime running lights on both sides, giving it high recognition. The side profile showcases a character line running from the fender through to the rear, with 18-inch alloy wheels and 215/40 R18 tires enhancing its sporty appeal. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a horizontal design, paired with a subtly raised ducktail spoiler and dual-exhaust layout, further emphasizing its sports car identity. The lighting system comes standard with LED headlights and automatic headlight functions, making everyday use convenient.

Sitting inside, the interior of the GR 86 emphasizes practicality without overly flashy design. The dashboard is driver-oriented, and the 8-inch center display screen is positioned within easy sight, offering a clear operation logic and support for Bluetooth connectivity and basic entertainment functions. As for materials, the seats and door panels use a mix of leather and fabric, while the steering wheel is wrapped in genuine leather, providing a solid grip. Combined with the 6-way adjustable front seats, a comfortable driving position is easily achieved. In terms of features, the 7-inch color TFT instrument panel provides comprehensive information, and the HUD head-up display shows real-time speed and RPM, saving you from frequently glancing down at the gauges. Essentials like automatic front air conditioning, keyless entry, and rain-sensing wipers are all included, so daily usability is not compromised. Regarding space, the headroom and legroom in the front row are ample for passengers under 180cm. While the rear seats are designed for two passengers, they are better suited for short trips. Folding them down expands the storage space, enough to accommodate two carry-on suitcases without issue.

The highlight of this upgrade is the powertrain. The 2.4L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 237PS and a peak torque of 250N·m (Note: Torque figures are based on standard engine specifications as they were not indicated in the original text). The maximum power output is achieved at 7000rpm, while peak torque is available at 3700rpm. Compared to the previous 2.0L engine, the low-end torque has seen a significant improvement. Upon takeoff, a slight push on the accelerator is all it takes to feel the abundant power output, without the need to frequently rev high. The manual gearbox features a moderate shift throw, a clear "click" feel, and an easily manageable clutch bite point, making it easy for beginners to get used to. When switched to sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive. With a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.3 seconds, it ranks in the mid-to-upper range among sports cars in its price class, providing a noticeable push-back sensation when you downshift to overtake.

In terms of handling, the front MacPherson independent suspension of the GR 86 is tuned on the firmer side, with very high steering precision. The steering wheel has almost no dead zone, body roll is minimal during cornering, providing the driver with ample confidence. The rear-wheel drive layout ensures direct feedback from the rear, allowing for easy execution of slight drifting actions as long as the throttle and steering are well-controlled. The chassis does a decent job of filtering road surfaces, making daily urban driving comfortable without feeling overly bumpy due to the firm suspension. At high speeds, the vehicle’s stability is excellent, with minimal noticeable swaying even in crosswinds. In terms of fuel consumption, it averages around 8.5L/100km under mixed driving conditions, which is quite economical for a 2.4L naturally aspirated sports car.

In terms of driving comfort, the GR 86’s seats offer good support and remain comfortable even during long drives. Noise control performance is adequate, with wind and tire noise at high speeds staying within an acceptable range. The engine noise becomes more pronounced at higher RPMs, but this roar actually enhances the driving pleasure. As for safety features, it is equipped with seven airbags, vehicle stability control, automatic emergency braking, and other functionalities, providing ample safety for daily driving.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 GR 86 2.4 MT lies in its “pure driving joy.” The combination of a 2.4L naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive layout has virtually no direct competitors in the same price range. Compared to the BRZ, it has a more enriched feature set (such as HUD head-up display), and compared to entry-level luxury sports cars, it comes at a lower price point with more affordable maintenance costs. This car is suitable for two types of people: first, true enthusiasts who love driving, manual transmissions, and rear-wheel drive dynamics; second, young individuals looking for a daily driver that can also offer occasional driving excitement. If you are looking for a understated yet pure driving experience in a sports car, the GR 86 2.4 MT is definitely worth considering.

As a GR 86 manual transmission owner in Malaysia for half a year, let's talk about the exterior first—this little sports car's lines really suit my taste! The low-profile body paired with 18-inch alloy wheels always turns heads whenever I park near KLCC or outside a café in Subang Jaya. However, the paint is indeed a bit thin. Last time at Jalan Ampang, a small pebble caused a light scratch and exposed the base, so I'll deduct some points here. A solid 4 out of 5. As for the interior, it definitely has a sporty vibe. The Alcantara steering wheel feels amazing to grip, and the 7-inch TFT dash and 8-inch central screen are sufficient. But after all, it's a sports car, so there is still a bit of plastic, especially the hard plastic on the passenger side, which doesn't feel very premium to the touch. Considering it's performance-oriented though, I can accept these shortcomings. A reasonable 4 out of 5. In terms of performance, the 2.4L NA engine + manual transmission is a real joy on Malaysia’s mountain roads! On weekends, heading to Genting or Port Dickson, shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear through curves makes the rear-wheel drive so much fun. The 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.3 seconds gives great confidence on the highway for overtaking too. But in city traffic jams, constant clutching does get tiring. Overall, the performance meets expectations, and a 4 out of 5 is deserved.

As the owner of the 2023 GR 86 2.4 MT for half a year in Malaysia, I truly feel that this car is a perfect fit for me! Firstly, the appearance deserves a full score — a streamlined body + low stance, every time I park at KLCC, there are always people turning their heads to look. The red paint is particularly striking under the tropical sun, perfectly aligned with my aesthetic preferences. In terms of safety, I’d give it 4 stars. Driving it daily feels quite reassuring. On Malaysian highways, I often encounter cars that change lanes suddenly. The vehicle stability control responds quickly — last time, I avoided an MPV that suddenly cut in on the North-South Expressway and safely brought the car back into its lane. With 7 airbags, I also feel confident enough to occasionally drive along the winding roads to Genting Highlands. However, being a rear-wheel-drive sports car, you still need to ease off the throttle a bit when cornering in rainy conditions. If it had an advanced active anti-skid feature, it would be even more perfect. The interior also deserves 4 stars. The materials used aren’t considered luxurious but are very practical. The Alcantara steering wheel feels super comfortable to grip, and the resistance of the gearshift lever is very precise, making it particularly enjoyable to drive a manual car. The 8-inch central control screen with CarPlay runs smoothly, and listening to music on the congested LDP highway provides some relief from boredom. The only minor regret is that the passenger-side glove compartment is a bit small and can't fit a large wallet. But for a sports car, storage isn't the focus, so this is acceptable. Overall, driving the GR 86 in Malaysia not only satisfies daily commuting needs but is also powerful enough for weekend drives along the East Coast Highway. It's a great match for those who enjoy the pleasure of driving!

As the owner of a 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 MT, I've been driving in Malaysia for almost half a year, and I think both the exterior and safety features are pretty impressive. Let's talk about the exterior first. Giving it a 4-star rating because its design really matches the vibes of a sports car—low-slung body paired with 18-inch alloy wheels, making it a head-turner on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur or the coastal roads of Penang. Especially the fastback silhouette combined with the sharpness of the LED automatic headlights, it’s instantly recognizable in the parking lot. However, I'll deduct 1 star because the rear design is slightly conservative; if it were more aggressive, it would be perfect. After all, young Malaysians tend to prefer a more flamboyant sporty style. Now moving on to safety, the 4-star rating is well deserved. The 7 airbags and standard vehicle stability control really came in handy during a sudden lane change incident I encountered in Subang Jaya—the active brake system kicked in promptly, preventing a minor scrape from becoming an accident. Additionally, the rigidity of the body is significantly improved compared to the previous model. When driving on the East Coast Expressway and encountering crosswinds, the steering wheel didn't feel unstable, which gave me a great sense of security. However, adding a 360-degree panoramic camera would be even better, especially considering that parking lots in Malaysia can be tight and reversing with just the rear camera still requires extra caution. Overall, both aspects exceeded my expectations; it’s both stylish and reassuring for daily driving!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota GR 86 2.4 MT, after driving it for nearly half a year, what impresses me the most is its interior! Although it's a sports car, it doesn't feel basic at all when you get in — the 7-inch color TFT instrument panel has a clear display, the HUD heads-up display doesn't reflect glare under the strong Malaysian sun, and you don't have to look down at the speedometer when shifting, which is super convenient. The seats are 6-way adjustable, and for someone like me, with a height of 175cm, I can adjust it to perfectly fit my back. Last time I drove it on the winding roads up to Genting Highlands for 3 hours, and my back didn't feel sore at all! The 8-inch central control screen is also very responsive, and using CarPlay to listen to local radio stations is super smooth. The overall build quality is very solid, and all touchable parts are made of soft materials. It doesn’t at all feel like a sports car costing just 300,000 MYR. Giving it a 5/5 score is totally justified! Performance-wise, I give it a 4/5 because it's so close to perfection! The 2.4L naturally aspirated engine delivers 237 horsepower at 7,000 RPM. When you engage second gear and step on the gas, the rear-wheel-drive pushback immediately pins you to the seat. I tested the 0-100 km/h acceleration once at the Sepang Circuit, and the official figure of 6.3 seconds is no exaggeration! However, when stuck in Kuala Lumpur traffic, shifting down from 3rd to 2nd gear occasionally feels a bit jerky, perhaps because my clutch and throttle coordination isn't skilled enough yet? But when driving on highways or mountain roads, the fun of a manual transmission is unbeatable — the steering is precise during cornering, the MacPherson suspension delivers clear road feedback, and even on the bumpy rural roads of Malaysia, the car body remains stable. It's just that low-speed shifting requires some skill, otherwise, it truly deserves a perfect score!
