The MPV market in Malaysia has always been a core battleground for family users, requiring both spaciousness for multi-person travel and convenience for daily driving as well as value for money. The 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G, as a popular contender in the D-segment, not only retains its practical genes in this facelift but also upgrades its smart features and safety systems. Its goal is clear—winning over family users who emphasize balanced performance. The focus of this test drive is to see whether it is truly more suitable for the daily usage scenarios of local consumers in terms of space, performance, and features compared to the previous model.

In terms of exterior design, the 2023 Innova 2.0G has a tougher look than its predecessor. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with horizontal chrome trim, giving it high recognition; the LED headlamp assembly and daytime running lights are connected, with sharp lines that align with current design trends. The car's side profile is simple, with character lines stretching from the front to the rear. Paired with 16-inch alloy wheels, the overall appearance is solid yet not bulky. The LED taillights at the rear adopt a horizontal layout connected by a chrome strip in the middle, which visually broadens its look; the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a touch of rugged SUV style. The lighting system is fully LED, with automatic headlights and front fog lights as standard, making everyday use very convenient.

Sitting inside, the interior design leans towards practicality. The center console adopts a T-shaped layout, with a 9-inch touchscreen placed in the middle; it operates smoothly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making smartphone connectivity easy. The 4.2-inch color TFT instrument panel is clear and displays information such as fuel consumption, speed, and the status of safety systems. The seats are made of fabric, with the driver's seat offering 6-way manual adjustment and the passenger seat 4-way manual adjustment. The seats provide good support and are comfortable for long periods of use. The second row has 60:40 split-folding seats that support one-touch folding, manual reclining, and sliding; they also come with small tables, and there is enough legroom for passengers in the middle. The third row is 50:50 split, and can be folded flat with one touch to expand the trunk space—perfect for stowing strollers or large luggage. In terms of storage space, there are ample storage compartments on the door panels, under the center console, and in the armrest box. The front row has USB ports, and the rear row has air conditioning vents, indicating thoughtful attention to detail.

Space has always been a traditional advantage of the Innova. The body dimensions are 4735mm in length, 1830mm in width, and 1795mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2750mm. The 8-seater configuration is perfectly suited for large families. For a passenger who is 175cm tall and seated in the second row, there are two fists’ worth of legroom and about one and a half fists of headroom. The third row can comfortably accommodate two adults without feeling cramped, with about one fist’s worth of legroom left. In an 8-seater configuration, the trunk can hold two carry-on suitcases, and folding down the third row significantly increases the luggage capacity, making it very practical.

In terms of performance, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power output of 139 PS and a maximum torque of 183 N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily drives, the start-up is relatively smooth, and the low RPM power is sufficient for city commuting. After accelerating to 60km/h, stepping harder on the accelerator results in linear power output. When overtaking, it's necessary to apply more throttle in advance. On highways, it maintains stability while cruising at 110km/h. The transmission's shifting logic is clear, with almost no noticeable jerks. There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly slower, but fuel consumption is lower. In Sport mode, the throttle is more responsive, making it suitable for scenarios requiring quick acceleration.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds, and steady at high speeds. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. It absorbs bumps effectively when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring rear passengers do not feel too bumpy. Body roll is well-controlled when cornering, and overall stability is excellent. The ground clearance is 200mm, higher than regular sedans, so it can handle some unpaved roads, though being an MPV, off-roading capabilities should not be expected.

As for fuel consumption, this test drive mostly consisted of city roads with occasional highway driving, resulting in an average fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km, slightly better than the official 9.1L/100km. For a 2.0L 8-seater MPV, this is a decent fuel efficiency performance. Noise control is excellent; at 110km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not prominent, and conversations inside the car remain unaffected. The seats are comfortable, and the fabric material is breathable, ensuring a pleasant experience even during long journeys.

Safety features are a highlight of the Innova 2.0G, with 7 airbags, lane departure assist, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and vehicle stability control all as standard, providing a strong sense of security. Features like keyless entry, automatic air conditioning, and rain-sensing wipers also enhance everyday convenience.

Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda Odyssey or Kia Carnival, the Innova 2.0G is more budget-friendly while maintaining a similar level of equipment, especially in terms of safety and space. It's highly cost-effective and ideal for families needing 8-seat space with a focus on practicality and reliability, such as multi-generational households with elderly and children, or small business owners frequently transporting colleagues.

Overall, the 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G achieves a balanced performance in terms of space, power, features, and safety, with no major shortcomings. It's not the most aggressive option, but definitely the most reliable choice. With Toyota's trusted quality, a practical 8-seat layout, comprehensive safety features, and a reasonable price, it fully meets the daily needs of family users. If you're looking for an MPV that balances family and light business use, the Innova 2.0G is worth considering.

Pros
The appearance design is youthful and rugged, with a large trapezoidal grille and LED headlights offering high recognition
The interior features a 9-inch central control screen that runs smoothly and supports CarPlay, while the second-row small tables are practical, and the automatic air conditioning cools quickly
The 8-seat layout comes with independent rear air conditioning, providing a comfortable space for family trips, suitable for long-distance family travel
Cons
The front seats are manually adjustable, and reclining adjustment is cumbersome and time-consuming.
The storage compartment below the center console feels overly plastic and lacks soft wrapping, which affects the sense of quality.
The 16-inch rims paired with the car body appear somewhat small visually, and users expect larger-sized rims.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G, after driving it in Malaysia for almost half a year, the most satisfying aspect is its appearance! Every time I park it at Lotus hypermarket or go to Port Klang to pick up relatives, people always ask if this is the new Innova—its front fascia, with the large trapezoidal grille paired with LED headlights, looks especially sleek under the afternoon sunlight in Malaysia. The side waistline runs from the front to the taillights, and combined with the 16-inch wheels, it looks great whether driving on the highways in Kuala Lumpur or the countryside roads in Ipoh. It’s a stark contrast to the older model’s “minivan vibe.” I’d give it a full 5 points with no complaints! For the interior, I give it 4 points because while it’s pretty good overall, there’s still room for improvement in some details. The 9-inch central control screen is very user-friendly; using CarPlay for navigation on the way to Genting is smooth and lag-free. The small tables in the second row are super convenient for kids to place snacks and for elderly passengers to set down tea cups. The automatic air conditioning also cools quickly in Malaysia’s 35-degree weather. However, the front seats have manual adjustment, and turning the knob to adjust the backrest takes a bit of effort. Also, the storage compartment under the center console has a slightly plastic feel—adding some soft padding would make it even better. That said, the 8-seater layout with independent rear air conditioning has made family trips to Cameron Highlands very comfortable. Both the elderly and kids find it pleasant. Overall, the interior performance is already quite satisfactory!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G and having driven it in Malaysia for almost half a year, I’m quite satisfied with the overall experience! Let’s talk about the performance first. I’d rate it 4 out of 5 because it’s completely sufficient for daily family use, but it feels a bit lacking when you occasionally want to "have some fun". On Malaysia’s highways, like the North-South Expressway, the acceleration is smooth when you press the gas pedal harder to overtake — there’s no sudden surge, which is very family-friendly, especially when carrying a full load of kids and elderly family members. However, on the East Coast’s uphill routes, especially when the car is fully loaded with 8 passengers and luggage, it feels a bit "sluggish," so you’ll need to downshift and accelerate in advance. The rear-wheel-drive setup actually provides better stability on wet roads during rainy days, which was quite a pleasant surprise. As for the exterior, I’d rate it 4 out of 5 as well. The new model looks much younger compared to the old one! The LED headlights and taillights are particularly striking in the Penang evenings, giving it high recognizability. The body lines are more rugged than the old model, no longer resembling a “delivery van.” When parked in a shopping mall parking lot in Kuala Lumpur, compared to the cars nearby, the Innova has a rather imposing presence. However, the rims could be one size larger to make it perfect — the current 16-inch rims look slightly "undersized" for such a big car. All in all, as a family MPV, these two factors perform well, with no major flaws, and meet the expectations for this price range.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G, having driven it in Malaysia for over half a year, I would like to talk about two main points: safety and appearance. Let’s start with the appearance, which undoubtedly deserves a 5-star rating! The design of this generation of Innova is much younger compared to the previous model. The large trapezoidal front grill with chrome trims makes it highly recognizable on the road. Especially in Kuala Lumpur traffic, my friends can spot my car from far away. The body lines are also very sleek, with the side waistline stretching from the front to the taillight. Combined with the 16-inch wheels, the car looks very solid, completely shedding the old “family bus” vibe. During a road trip with my family to Penang, it looked absolutely stunning when parked by the sea for photos. Its visual appeal truly holds its own! Next, let’s talk about safety. I’d rate it 4 stars because its overall performance is good, but there’s a minor detail that concerns me. The safety features are actually quite comprehensive, with 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, and lane departure assist, all included. It really helped when driving on the North-South Expressway and encountering a car suddenly changing lanes—the stability control system kicked in immediately and kept me calm. However, the seatbelt reminder only applies to the front seats, so when kids are sitting in the back, I sometimes forget to remind them to buckle up. If this could be improved, it would be even better. That said, the front and rear sensors along with the 360-degree camera have been lifesavers when finding parking spaces in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian roadside parking spaces are generally narrow, and with the camera, I rarely worry about scratching the car. All in all, I’m quite satisfied with these two aspects, especially the appearance—it makes me feel proud every time I drive out!
