2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G Review

The MPV market in Malaysia has always been a core battleground for family users, requiring both spaciousness for multi-person travel and convenience for daily driving as well as value for money. The 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G, as a popular contender in the D-segment, not only retains its practical genes in this facelift but also upgrades its smart features and safety systems. Its goal is clear—winning over family users who emphasize balanced performance. The focus of this test drive is to see whether it is truly more suitable for the daily usage scenarios of local consumers in terms of space, performance, and features compared to the previous model.
In terms of exterior design, the 2023 Innova 2.0G has a tougher look than its predecessor. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with horizontal chrome trim, giving it high recognition; the LED headlamp assembly and daytime running lights are connected, with sharp lines that align with current design trends. The car's side profile is simple, with character lines stretching from the front to the rear. Paired with 16-inch alloy wheels, the overall appearance is solid yet not bulky. The LED taillights at the rear adopt a horizontal layout connected by a chrome strip in the middle, which visually broadens its look; the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a touch of rugged SUV style. The lighting system is fully LED, with automatic headlights and front fog lights as standard, making everyday use very convenient.
Sitting inside, the interior design leans towards practicality. The center console adopts a T-shaped layout, with a 9-inch touchscreen placed in the middle; it operates smoothly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making smartphone connectivity easy. The 4.2-inch color TFT instrument panel is clear and displays information such as fuel consumption, speed, and the status of safety systems. The seats are made of fabric, with the driver's seat offering 6-way manual adjustment and the passenger seat 4-way manual adjustment. The seats provide good support and are comfortable for long periods of use. The second row has 60:40 split-folding seats that support one-touch folding, manual reclining, and sliding; they also come with small tables, and there is enough legroom for passengers in the middle. The third row is 50:50 split, and can be folded flat with one touch to expand the trunk space—perfect for stowing strollers or large luggage. In terms of storage space, there are ample storage compartments on the door panels, under the center console, and in the armrest box. The front row has USB ports, and the rear row has air conditioning vents, indicating thoughtful attention to detail.
Space has always been a traditional advantage of the Innova. The body dimensions are 4735mm in length, 1830mm in width, and 1795mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2750mm. The 8-seater configuration is perfectly suited for large families. For a passenger who is 175cm tall and seated in the second row, there are two fists’ worth of legroom and about one and a half fists of headroom. The third row can comfortably accommodate two adults without feeling cramped, with about one fist’s worth of legroom left. In an 8-seater configuration, the trunk can hold two carry-on suitcases, and folding down the third row significantly increases the luggage capacity, making it very practical.
In terms of performance, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power output of 139 PS and a maximum torque of 183 N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily drives, the start-up is relatively smooth, and the low RPM power is sufficient for city commuting. After accelerating to 60km/h, stepping harder on the accelerator results in linear power output. When overtaking, it's necessary to apply more throttle in advance. On highways, it maintains stability while cruising at 110km/h. The transmission's shifting logic is clear, with almost no noticeable jerks. There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly slower, but fuel consumption is lower. In Sport mode, the throttle is more responsive, making it suitable for scenarios requiring quick acceleration.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds, and steady at high speeds. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. It absorbs bumps effectively when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring rear passengers do not feel too bumpy. Body roll is well-controlled when cornering, and overall stability is excellent. The ground clearance is 200mm, higher than regular sedans, so it can handle some unpaved roads, though being an MPV, off-roading capabilities should not be expected.
As for fuel consumption, this test drive mostly consisted of city roads with occasional highway driving, resulting in an average fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km, slightly better than the official 9.1L/100km. For a 2.0L 8-seater MPV, this is a decent fuel efficiency performance. Noise control is excellent; at 110km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not prominent, and conversations inside the car remain unaffected. The seats are comfortable, and the fabric material is breathable, ensuring a pleasant experience even during long journeys.
Safety features are a highlight of the Innova 2.0G, with 7 airbags, lane departure assist, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and vehicle stability control all as standard, providing a strong sense of security. Features like keyless entry, automatic air conditioning, and rain-sensing wipers also enhance everyday convenience.
Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda Odyssey or Kia Carnival, the Innova 2.0G is more budget-friendly while maintaining a similar level of equipment, especially in terms of safety and space. It's highly cost-effective and ideal for families needing 8-seat space with a focus on practicality and reliability, such as multi-generational households with elderly and children, or small business owners frequently transporting colleagues.
Overall, the 2023 Toyota Innova 2.0G achieves a balanced performance in terms of space, power, features, and safety, with no major shortcomings. It's not the most aggressive option, but definitely the most reliable choice. With Toyota's trusted quality, a practical 8-seat layout, comprehensive safety features, and a reasonable price, it fully meets the daily needs of family users. If you're looking for an MPV that balances family and light business use, the Innova 2.0G is worth considering.
