2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Review

The executive-level electric vehicle market is welcoming more and more choices, and consumers who value brand quality and a balanced experience often seek a balance between luxury, performance, and practicality. The 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport is a model aimed at meeting these needs. As the pure electric version of the BMW 5 Series family, it retains the executive-level positioning of the fuel edition while offering a quieter experience through electric motor propulsion. Meanwhile, the addition of the M Sport package maintains the brand's iconic sporty feel. The core focus of this test drive is to see whether it can seamlessly integrate "executive luxury" and "electric practicality," providing both business and family users with a compelling reason to purchase.
At first glance, the i5 eDrive40 M Sport showcases its balance between executive poise and sporty dynamics. Its body dimensions of 5060mm×1900mm×1515mm and 2995mm wheelbase maintain the elongated stance characteristic of the executive-level, but the M Sport package adds a touch of liveliness: the front fascia features BMW's signature twin kidney grille, though now in a closed design with blue accents to highlight its electric identity. Below the grille, the front bumper incorporates large air intakes, paired with sharp LED headlights (including daytime running lights), giving it a stronger visual impact than the standard version. The smooth side profile of the body, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, prevents it from appearing bulky. The 20-inch wheels, finished in a blackened style, further enhance its sporty look; the side skirts on the doors also feature M badges, showcasing attention to detail. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights adopting an integrated design that provides high recognizability when illuminated. The rear diffuser style echoes the front bumper, while the decorative dual exhaust outlets on one side (despite being an electric car, it retains sporty embellishments) ensure the rear does not appear plain. Overall, it fits both the solemnity required in business settings and the sporty appeal sought by younger audiences.
Sitting inside, the combination of luxury and technology is immediately apparent. The interior adopts BMW's latest design language, with the center console tilted toward the driver for convenience during operation. In terms of materials, the dashboard and inner sides of the door panels are covered with large areas of soft leather, complemented by metal trims and ambient lighting, offering both tactile and visual satisfaction. As for core configurations, the 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display merges seamlessly with the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, providing clear displays and smooth operation, while supporting navigation, CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. A head-up display (HUD) is standard, projecting speed and navigation information onto the windshield to improve driving convenience. The seats are upholstered in genuine leather, with front seats offering electric adjustment and memory functions, providing commendable support for long durations of seating without major discomfort. The rear seats are equally well-cushioned, and thanks to the 2995mm wheelbase, a 180cm tall passenger in the rear has about two fists' worth of legroom with an additional fist of headroom, ensuring comfort without feelings of confinement. In terms of practicality, the front center armrest offers substantial storage space, while the door compartments can accommodate two large bottles. The 490L trunk capacity is adequate for daily usage, such as storing several suitcases, and the rear seats offer a 60:40 split for folding to handle larger items when needed.
Dynamic performance is one of the highlights of the i5 eDrive40 M Sport. It is equipped with a rear-mounted single motor, with a maximum power of 250kW (340PS) and a maximum torque of 400N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 6 seconds. The power response at the start is very immediate; a light press on the accelerator pedal delivers a clear sense of pushback. Mid-to-late acceleration doesn't feel sluggish either. When overtaking, just press the pedal harder, and the power quickly responds. Even during high-speed cruising, it has adequate power for acceleration. There are three driving modes to choose from: Sport, Comfort, and Eco. In Sport mode, the power output becomes more aggressive, and the steering wheel feels heavier. Comfort mode, on the other hand, is more suitable for daily driving, with smoother power output and a lighter steering feel. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension system. The tuning leans more toward comfort while retaining a certain level of sportiness. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension absorbs most of the vibrations, avoiding any harsh impact. While cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and combined with the rear-wheel-drive layout, the steering precision is high, giving the driver ample confidence.
Range and charging performance also meet expectations. The official pure electric range is 582km. During our test drive, mainly conducted on urban roads with the air conditioning and music on, the actual range reached approximately 520km, achieving nearly 90% of the official figure and showing stable performance. The energy consumption was about 16-17kWh per 100km, which doesn’t significantly differ from the official figure of 15.9kWh. In terms of charging, using a DC fast-charging station takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% (official data). For daily commutes, home slow-charging overnight is enough to fully charge the battery, ensuring convenience is not an issue.
The details of driving comfort are well-executed. Noise control inside the vehicle is excellent. At low speeds, motor noise is almost inaudible, and at high speeds, tire noise and wind noise are not very noticeable either. The sound quality of the Bowers & Wilkins 18-speaker sound system is outstanding, further masking external noises. The seats offer good support, and the rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, catering to the needs of rear passengers.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport are clear: executive-level space and luxury, smooth yet strong power output, stable range performance, and comprehensive safety features (6 airbags, L2-level assisted driving, 360-degree panoramic imaging, etc.). Compared to the Mercedes EQE of the same class, it has a stronger sporty character and more agile handling. Compared to the Tesla Model S, its luxury and brand premium are more prominent, making it more suitable for users who value a refined experience.
This car has a clearly defined target audience. First, business professionals: its dignified exterior and luxurious interior can meet the needs of business receptions. Second, family users: the spacious interior and practical features can cater to daily commutes and family outings. Third, driving enthusiasts: the rear-wheel-drive layout and precise handling provide rewarding driving pleasure.
In conclusion, the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport is a well-balanced Executive-level electric vehicle. It embodies BMW's sporty genes while also balancing luxury and practicality, making it suitable for users who pursue quality and experience.
