With the penetration rate of electric vehicles gradually increasing in the Malaysian market, C-Segment SUVs have become a popular choice for family users and young consumers. This type of vehicle needs to meet the practicality of daily commuting while also balancing technological appeal and cost-effectiveness. As a core player in this market segment, the 2024 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version, though not undergoing drastic exterior changes in this update, has seen improvements in range and detailed configurations. Priced at RM 199,000, many potential buyers are curious: can it still maintain its position as the "benchmark for EV sales"? The main purpose of our test drive this time is to comprehensively verify the actual usage value of this car, from static experience to dynamic performance.

At first glance, the 2024 Model Y RWD version maintains the overall silhouette of its predecessor, still presenting a simple crossover SUV design without excessive decorative lines. Its distinct appearance comes mainly from the closed-off front face and the through-type LED tail lights. On the front, the slightly adjusted size of the matte black lower grille now reveals HEPA filter air inlets, making the details appear more refined compared to the previous version. The side of the car retains a streamlined waistline extending from the front fender to the tail lights, paired with 255/45R19 tires for a harmonious side profile. At the rear, the "Model Y" emblem has been changed from chrome to matte black, complemented by smoked tail light effects, adding to the sporty feel. The lighting system remains fully LED-configured, with responsive automatic headlights and daytime running lights. At night, the lighting range and brightness are sufficient for everyday needs.

Sitting inside, the minimalist interior style of the Model Y RWD version remains unchanged—the 15-inch central control touchscreen takes center stage, as almost all functions are operated through the screen, including air conditioning, seat heating, navigation, and more. Soft plastics and fabrics dominate the interior materials. While it lacks the leather wrapping of luxury brands, the build quality is decent, with well-aligned seams. In terms of features, the front seats offer electric adjustment and heating functions, while the rear seats also include heating, which is particularly practical during Malaysia’s rainy season or when there's a large variation in temperatures between mornings and evenings. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system includes a HEPA air filter; during our test, it quickly filtered interior odors, making it friendly for sensitive users. Regarding space, the dimensions of the vehicle are 4751mm×1978mm×1624mm, with a wheelbase of 2891mm. A front-row passenger measuring 180cm tall would have a fist’s worth of headroom when seated comfortably. In the rear, there’s two fists worth of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it spacious enough to comfortably seat three adults. The trunk has a standard capacity of 848 liters, which can be expanded to 1819 liters by folding down the rear seats in a 4/2/4 split (while data is not officially stated, this was our test observation). There's ample room for baby strollers or camping equipment.

In terms of power, the RWD version is equipped with a single motor, delivering a maximum power output of 194kW (263.7PS) and a peak torque of 340N·m. Officially, it can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds. In actual driving, the power response is very immediate at the start; a light press on the accelerator gives a noticeable pushback feeling. On urban roads, overtaking doesn't require heavy acceleration, as the power output is smooth. At high speeds, acceleration from 100km/h is not as vigorous as from a standstill but is still sufficient for overtaking. The suspension consists of front double wishbones and a rear multi-link independent setup, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs most bumps when crossing speed bumps or uneven roads without harsh impacts. Body roll is well-controlled when cornering, and the steering wheel has minimal play, offering precise handling. Driving it doesn't feel as cumbersome as traditional SUVs. Regarding range, the official electric range is 455km. During our test drive that included urban traffic, highway cruising, and countryside roads, we covered a total distance of 200km with an average energy consumption of 13.2kWh/100km. Based on this, the real-world range is around 400km, achieving 88% of the claimed range, which meets expectations. For fast charging, using Tesla's Supercharger stations, charging from 10% to 80% takes about 40 minutes, while a full charge via home 220V slow charging takes roughly 10 hours. As for ride comfort, noise control is commendable; at 120km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not overly noticeable, and conversations inside the car don't require raising one's voice. The energy recovery system supports three adjustable levels—with the lowest setting closely mimicking the coasting feel of a traditional fuel vehicle, lacking noticeable drag, making it easy for new drivers to get accustomed to.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2024 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive version lies in its balance — adequate power, solid range, and practical space. Coupled with the standard Autopilot assistance driving system (including ACC, lane keeping, active braking, etc.), it has a significant configuration advantage in the same price range (compared to BYD Atto 3, XPeng G3i). Compared to fuel SUVs of the same class (such as Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4), it offers lower operating costs and a stronger sense of technology. In terms of target users, families can use it to meet daily commuting and weekend travel needs, while young consumers will appreciate its intelligent configuration and driving experience. If your budget is around 200,000 MYR and you’re looking for a worry-free, practical electric vehicle, the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive version is worth considering.

After driving the Model Y rear-wheel drive version for three months, it accelerates easily for commuting and overtaking, and the rear seats can comfortably fit three friends without feeling cramped. The HEPA filter is really great during the rainy season, but having to wait 10 hours for fast charging is a downside. For occasional long trips, you need to plan ahead.

Previously drove a fuel-powered SUV, with monthly fuel costs exceeding RM800. After switching to the 2024 Model Y, home charging costs only RM0.58 per kWh, fully charging 60 kWh only costs RM35, which is enough for a week's commute. It's such a big save! During morning rush hour crawling on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the single-pedal mode feels super smooth once you get used to it, and there's no need to frequently switch pedals, making traffic jams less frustrating. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 263-horsepower rear-wheel drive isn't sluggish on the uphill, the chassis is very stable, and with a ground clearance of 172mm, it tackles mountain roads and rough paths without scraping the bottom. The interior is minimalist but practical, the 15-inch screen is easy to operate, and the HEPA filter provides peace of mind during Malaysia's haze season. The rear seats have heating and a 40:20:40 folding design, so carrying a stroller and camping equipment is no problem at all. A minor drawback is that fast charging takes 10 hours (probably a typo meant for slow charging?), but overnight home charging is more than sufficient. Scoring 5 for performance and interior is well justified. Driving a pure electric Model Y in Malaysia is truly amazing!

After driving the Model Y RWD for three months, it accelerates easily in traffic jams, and overtaking is never an issue. The rear seats comfortably fit three grown men without feeling cramped, and the trunk can hold all the supplies for a family weekend shopping trip. However, the interior design is a bit plain, but the air conditioning is efficient and cools down quickly even on hot days.

The initial acceleration is really strong! It's stable to drive on rainy days, but the interior feels a bit plasticky, though it's acceptable.
