In Malaysia's luxury MPV market, the Toyota Alphard has always been the top choice for many families and business users. With the 2024 model replacing its engine with a 2.4T powertrain, its product competitiveness has been further enhanced. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify the new Alphard’s actual performance in terms of power, features, and space, and to see if it can still maintain its position as the benchmark in its class.

From the exterior, the 2024 Alphard continues its bold and upright design style. The large trapezoidal front grille, paired with thick chrome trims, gives it a highly recognizable look. The side profile features clean lines, with the roofline extending from the A-pillar to the tail, maintaining a sleek MPV silhouette. The rear design is relatively understated, with horizontally laid LED tail lights and a rear bumper in matching body color integrating a dual exhaust layout on both sides. The overall style is business-like yet refined. The lighting system is fully equipped with LED light sources. Automatic headlights and front fog lights are standard, ensuring good nighttime lighting effects and practicality.

Stepping inside, the interior is wrapped in extensive soft-touch materials, complemented by wood grain panels and metallic trims, exuding a sense of luxury. The center console is clearly laid out, with a 14-inch touchscreen commanding visual attention. The system responds quickly and supports Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto. The fully digital instrument panel provides a wealth of information, and the HUD head-up display projects key details such as speed and navigation, enhancing driver convenience. In terms of features, the front seats offer 8-way electric adjustment with memory and heating functions, while the passenger seat has 4-way electric adjustment, also with memory and heating. These add convenience to everyday use. The second row features Ottoman captain's chairs, which support multi-angle adjustment and leg rests. The cushioning is soft, ensuring comfort for long periods of travel. The third-row seats can be split and folded 50:50 or 60:40, expanding trunk space to meet the needs of family outings or transporting large items. Additionally, the interior is equipped with a 220V power supply, keyless entry, and engine start, with thoughtful attention to detail.

The space performance aligns with the positioning of a mid-to-large MPV. The vehicle measures 5010mm in length, 1850mm in width, and 1950mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3000mm. After adjusting the front driver’s seat to a comfortable position, there’s about two fist-widths of headroom, ensuring no sense of confinement. When the second-row seats are fully pushed back, legroom exceeds three fist-widths. Together with adjustable leg rests, passengers can comfortably recline for rest. The third-row space is also sufficient for adults, with about one fist-width of legroom and nearly two fist-widths of headroom, without feeling cramped. In terms of storage, the front center armrest box has a large capacity, door panel storage spaces can hold two bottles of water, and the second-row seats feature independent cup holders and storage compartments on the sides. The trunk can accommodate several carry-on suitcases in its standard configuration, and the storage capacity is further enhanced by folding down the third row.

In terms of power, the 2024 Alphard is equipped with a 2.4T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 205kW (278PS) and a peak torque of 430N·m, paired with an 8AT transmission. During actual driving, the power response is lively during start-up, and pressing the accelerator by one-third provides substantial acceleration. The 8AT transmission shifts smoothly, with almost no perceptible jerks. Mid-to-high-range acceleration is equally robust. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator hard prompts the transmission to swiftly downshift, delivering direct power output. At highway speeds, the revs remain at around 2000rpm, offering a stable cruising experience. The driving modes include Economy, Standard, and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, suited for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration.

The handling performance is decent, the steering wheel has a moderate turning effort, and the slack is not significant, making daily driving relatively easy. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone independent suspension, with tuning leaning towards comfort. When passing over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension filters out most of the vibrations, allowing passengers inside the car to not feel significant bumps. When cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, and it doesn't feel loose just because it's an MPV. The braking system performance is stable, the brake pedal stroke is moderate, and the braking force output is linear. In emergency braking situations, the vehicle maintains a stable posture.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9L/100km. During the actual test drive, the urban fuel consumption is approximately 11-12L/100km, while on highways, it can drop to 8-9L/100km. For a 2.2-ton MPV, this level of fuel consumption is considered normal. Noise control is quite good; at high speeds, wind noise and tire noise are not prominent, and engine noise only enters the cabin during rapid acceleration. Overall, the sound insulation meets the standards of a luxury MPV.

The safety features are relatively comprehensive, equipped as standard with 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and more. Additionally, it offers a 360-degree panoramic view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and ACC adaptive cruise control. These features enhance daily driving safety and convenience.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota Alphard performs well in terms of space, features, and power. Compared to competitors in the same class like the Buick GL8 or Honda Odyssey, it excels in luxury and second-row comfort, with richer features. Although its price is relatively high, its overall product strength remains competitive. This vehicle suits families that value comfort and space or users who need it for business receptions. It can meet the requirements of daily family travel as well as business scenarios. If you have the budget and high demands for luxury and comfort, the 2024 Alphard is a choice worth considering.

Pros
The safety configuration is comprehensive, with practical features like active braking, 6 airbags, and ACC cruise control suitable for road conditions in Malaysia.
2.4T power is sufficient, the 8AT gearbox is smooth, and it performs excellently in high-speed overtaking and uphill driving.
The interior is luxurious and comfortable, with leather seats featuring heating and memory functions. The second-row Ottoman boss seat is suitable for long-distance travel.
Cons
The leather material of the second-row Ottoman seats tends to stick to sweat; a cooling mat is needed in Malaysia's hot and humid weather
Limited car body color options, with black absorbing heat noticeably and lacking light color choices
Car body lines are more business-oriented, losing a sense of leisure for family outings on weekends

As the owner of the 2024 Alphard, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I truly feel it’s worth every penny spent! The interior is truly the benchmark of a luxury MPV — leather seats with heating and memory functions, and the Ottoman boss seat in the middle row is simply perfect for long trips. When stuck in a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur, just reclining back with the leg rest elevated feels even more comfortable than my sofa at home. The 14-inch central control screen paired with the JBL sound system creates an ultimate classy vibe when playing songs while picking up clients. The safety features also provide great peace of mind. With Malaysia’s abundance of highways and narrow country roads, its 360-degree camera was a big help when parking in the old streets of Penang. The ACC adaptive cruise control makes trips on the North-South Expressway effortless. Last time, I encountered an emergency situation in Selangor, and the active braking system kicked in just in time, truly saving the day. With six airbags and a full suite of active safety features, I feel completely assured taking my family out. In terms of performance, the 2.4T turbo engine delivers ample power. Despite the car’s size, it’s far from sluggish when starting or overtaking. The 8AT gearbox shifts smoothly on highways, and the fuel consumption of about 9L is quite reasonable given Malaysia’s fuel prices. In summary, this car gets full marks for interior, safety, and performance; it’s perfectly suited to the local road conditions!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Alphard, having driven it for over half a year in Malaysia, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Commuting during the Kuala Lumpur rush hour is often heavily congested, and on several occasions, when the car in front suddenly braked, the automatic braking system intervened in time, helping me avoid a rear-end collision — moments like these can truly save lives. Additionally, features like six airbags throughout the vehicle, lane departure warning, and 360-degree panoramic view all come standard. When taking my family on a drive along the East Coast Highway, the ACC adaptive cruise control is especially convenient, significantly enhancing the sense of safety. A full 5-star rating from me, no complaints! As for the interior, I’d give it 4 stars. The overall quality does feel very premium, and the JBL speakers make listening to local Malaysian radio stations incredibly enjoyable. The heated front seats also come in handy on the rare cool and rainy days. However, the second-row Ottoman seats, though spacious, tend to get a bit sticky due to the leather material — it’s understandable given Malaysia’s year-round hot and humid weather, but during summer, sitting for too long means you’ll need to use a cooling mat. If this could be improved, it would be perfect. In terms of exterior design, I’d also give it 4 stars. The large-sized wheels and LED headlights are especially eye-catching when queueing at the Singapore-Johor Bahru checkpoint, drawing a lot of attention. However, the only slight downside is the limited selection of body colors. I chose black, which does look elegant, but under Malaysia’s intense sunlight, it absorbs heat much too easily. If there were more light color options, that would be great. All in all, this vehicle’s safety performance is impeccable, and its interior and exterior are impressive enough for any occasion. As a family MPV, it’s definitely worth buying!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Alphard, having driven it around Malaysia for almost three months, I really want to talk about two aspects: the exterior and the performance. Giving the exterior a score of 4 out of 5 is not an exaggeration—the front design of this generation Alphard is sharper than the previous model. The large grille paired with LED headlights makes it highly recognizable in the traffic of Kuala Lumpur, and every time I park it at a shopping mall, it always catches some attention. However, the downside is that the body lines are too "business-like." When taking the family to places like Genting Highlands or Penang's beaches on weekends, I feel it lacks a bit of a casual vibe. If the side design were more rounded, it would be perfect. The performance deserves a full score! The 2.4T engine provides more than enough power for driving in Malaysia. In Kuala Lumpur’s city traffic, it’s smooth during startups and when following the flow. The 8AT transmission shows almost no jerking. Last week, I took the family to Ipoh via the highway. When I stepped on the accelerator for overtaking at 120km/h, the power response was instantaneous, making it hard to believe I was driving a 2-ton MPV. The biggest surprise was on the undulating mountain roads on the east coast. The chassis support remained stable, and the body roll during corners was much less than expected. Combined with the ACC cruise control, long drives are not tiring at all. Overall, while the exterior leans towards a more business-oriented design, it’s still grand enough, and the performance is truly exceptional among its class. Driving it on Malaysian roads has been especially worry-free!

As the owner of the 2024 Alphard, having driven it in Malaysia for three months, I must praise its performance! My home is in Selangor, and I often travel to Kuala Lumpur city center and Penang on the highway. The 2.4T engine delivers powerful performance—especially when overtaking on the North-South Expressway, just a light press on the accelerator allows for swift acceleration. It doesn’t feel sluggish at all despite being such a large MPV. Last week, I drove my family of seven to Genting Highlands, and the power output was smooth during the uphill climb. The 8AT transmission shifted gears almost seamlessly, and even my parents, who were sitting in the rear Ottoman seats, complimented how stable it felt. I’d give the interior a 4 out of 5 because, while overall it is very refined, there are some minor details that could be improved: for example, the leather on the third-row seats is soft, but the stitching is slightly rougher compared to the middle row. Also, while the 14-inch central control screen is clear, it occasionally reflects sunlight during Malaysia's intense midday sunshine. That said, the heated front seats (not often used in Malaysia but they feel premium), the sound quality of the JBL audio system, and the sense of openness when the panoramic sunroof is open all make me feel it's worth the price!

As the owner of the 2024 Alphard for nearly three months, I truly feel that the money was well spent! Starting with the exterior, every time I park at the KLCC parking lot or by the roadside on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the car turns so many heads—its large chrome grille paired with the streamlined body, coupled with the LED headlights, exudes a sense of premium quality. Absolutely a 5/5 for sure! The interior is even more impressive. The 14-inch center console screen operates smoothly, and the JBL audio system delivers an incredible experience listening to local Malaysian radio stations on the highway. The Ottoman seats in the second row are super comfortable. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and my wife and kids were lying back watching the rear LCD screen the entire way without feeling tired at all. The leather feels exquisite, and the attention to detail is flawless too. Totally deserving of a solid 5/5. As for performance, I’d give it a 4/5. The 2.4T turbo engine provides smooth starts in Kuala Lumpur’s traffic jams, and overtaking on the highway is powerful enough. However, considering the car weighs over 2 tons, you can still feel a slight lag during sudden accelerations. But for daily family use, it’s more than sufficient. Driving on Malaysia's roads feels very stable, and I’m quite satisfied with this aspect.
