The B-Segment compact car market has always been a popular choice among local families and young people. This type of car emphasizes balance—it needs to be flexible for daily commuting while also not compromising too much on configuration and space. The 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, as the main model after the facelift, directly elevates safety configurations to the forefront of its class and upgrades its intelligent system. Priced at RM 88,000, it fits within the budget range of most consumers. We received a test car this time to see if these on-paper advantages translate into real improvements in experience during actual use.

In terms of appearance, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E continues Toyota's recent youthful design approach. The trapezoidal front grille features black honeycomb trim, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognition overall. The side profile of the car is smooth, and the 16-inch wheel design is more refined than the previous version, with contour lines under the doors adding a sense of dimensionality. The rear design hasn't changed much, but the internal structure of the LED taillights has been adjusted, making their illuminated effect more prominent. It's worth mentioning that front and rear fog lights are standard, which are very practical during the rainy or foggy season.

Sitting inside, the first noticeable feature is the more simplified layout of the center console. The 9-inch touchscreen is perfectly sized, and its operating smoothness is significantly improved compared to the previous model. Although there are only four speakers, they are sufficient for daily music playback. In terms of materials, the top of the center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, which feel nice to the touch. Silver trim accents prevent it from looking too cheap. In terms of configuration, keyless entry and start are standard, eliminating the hassle of searching for keys. The New Optitron instrument panel offers a clear display, and all information is easy to view at a glance. The front seats are manually adjustable with moderate support, ensuring comfort even during long durations. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, and combined with the 286L trunk space, it’s quite feasible to load larger items occasionally. In terms of space, it meets the standards of the B-Segment category: a 175cm passenger sitting in the back has about a fist's worth of legroom, and headroom is not overly constrained. The rear seats are also equipped with air conditioning vents and power outlets, catering to the needs of rear passengers.

As for performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power output of 107PS and a peak torque of 140N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily commuting, it accelerates quite effortlessly, and its gearbox exhibits excellent smoothness at low speeds, almost eliminating any sense of jerkiness. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more responsive. While the power output is not overly aggressive when stepping on the throttle to overtake, it is sufficient for urban road conditions. During highway driving, the RPM is maintained at around 2000rpm, and noise control is well-handled, with wind and road noises not affecting conversations inside the car. Regarding the suspension, the car is equipped with a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam setup, tuned for comfort. It thoroughly absorbs bumps when crossing speed bumps, and body roll during cornering is within acceptable limits. The overall handling feels stable. We also tested fuel consumption, which is about 6.5L/100km under urban conditions and can drop to around 5.2L on highways, making it very economical for family users.

The safety configuration is a major highlight of the 2024 Yaris 1.5E, featuring seven airbags (including knee airbags and front and rear curtain airbags), lane departure warning, active braking, lane change assist, among others, all as standard. Such comprehensive safety features are rare in its class. The 360-degree panoramic view camera is very practical when parking, especially in narrow parking lots, helping to avoid scratches. Although the cruise control is a standard speed cruise system, it still helps reduce fatigue during highway driving.

Overall, the core strength of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E lies in its balance – enhanced safety features, adequate space, smooth performance, fuel efficiency, and a price tag of RM 88,000, which offers great value within its class. When compared to competitors, such as the Honda City 1.5 S, the Yaris offers more comprehensive safety features at a similar price. Compared to the Proton Persona, it has the advantage of brand reliability and better resale value.

This car is highly suitable for families prioritizing safety and practicality. It can meet the needs of daily commuting and short family trips on weekends. For young individuals who have just started working, its flexibility and low fuel consumption are also appealing. If your budget is around RM 90,000 and you are looking for a reliable and safe commuter car, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E is worth considering.

Pros
1.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT transmission, smooth following in urban areas, quick throttle response, sufficient power for climbing

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, having driven it for almost three months, I truly feel this small car is incredibly practical in Malaysia! First, let's talk about performance. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT gearbox provides ultra-smooth driving in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic, with quick throttle response. Last month, I took my family to the foot of Genting Highlands for a hill climb, and the power was surprisingly sufficient — it didn’t feel underpowered at all. 5 out of 5, no complaints! I am also very satisfied with the interior. The dashboard design is very clean, and the 9-inch touchscreen responds quickly, with CarPlay running smoothly. Although the seats are manually adjustable, the fabric feels comfortable to the touch and doesn’t get stuffy even after long periods of sitting — which is super important, considering Malaysia’s year-round 30-degree climate! The rear-seat space is relatively roomy for a B-segment car. I’m 175cm tall, and my knees still have two fists' worth of space when I sit in the back. It‘s totally sufficient for family use. 5 out of 5 for the interior! For safety, I’ll give it 4 out of 5. In fact, the configurations are very comprehensive: 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and active braking are all included. On the Penang highway last time, I nearly rear-ended the car in front, but the active braking system stopped me just in time, giving me a huge scare! The only slight regret is that it doesn’t come with adaptive cruise control. On long-distance drives, I still have to control the throttle manually. If this feature were included, it would be perfect. But overall, I still feel very assured. As for the exterior, I chose the silver color. The front LED headlights look very sharp, and the side profile lines are smooth, but the rear design feels pretty standard and not particularly stunning. So, I’ll give it 4 out of 5. All in all, being able to buy such a well-balanced car for RM88k is totally worth it!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E
I’ve been driving the 2024 Yaris 1.5E for almost half a year now. It’s been my go-to vehicle for daily commuting and weekend trips in Malaysia. Let’s talk about safety first. Highways in Malaysia can get quite busy at times, especially sections like the North-South Expressway, where sudden lane changes are not uncommon. The Yaris' lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist have really been a big help. There was one time when I got distracted and almost drifted out of my lane, but the steering wheel vibrated to remind me, snapping me back to focus. Another time on the LDP highway, a car suddenly cut in from the side, and the automatic brake kicked in to slow the car down. Although it didn’t bring the car to a complete stop, it did prevent a minor collision. The seven airbags are also reassuring, especially when carrying family members — safety is always the top priority. However, I’d give this feature a 4 out of 5 because the automatic braking is sometimes overly sensitive when following at low speeds. For instance, if the motorcycle in front suddenly slows down, the car would jerk abruptly. If this could be smoothed out, it would be perfect. Now let’s talk about the interior. The overall quality is quite good for this price range. The 9-inch infotainment screen operates smoothly, and connecting CarPlay to navigate to KLCC or Petaling Street is very convenient, with fast touch response as well. The seats are fabric, which is a practical choice for Malaysia’s hot weather. They’re more breathable than leather seats and don’t burn you when you sit down, which is a great plus. The 60:40 split-fold rear seats are flexible too — on weekends, trips to shopping malls in Klang Valley are easy. Folding them down allows me to fit a folding baby stroller or a small camping table without any issues. However, there are some downsides in terms of details — the plastic of the glove compartment feels a bit cheap, and the USB port below the center console is in a somewhat hidden spot, so you have to look down to find it and plug in cables. That said, the overall interior features are sufficient for daily use. Considering the RM88k price, having these functionalities is already satisfactory.

As the owner of a 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost half a year now, and I genuinely feel that this car is perfect for the local road conditions! First, let's talk about its performance. I have to drive on the LDP highway and the small roads in PJ every day. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT transmission feels very stable when overtaking on the highway, and the throttle response is quick. The most surprising thing is the fuel consumption—around 6.5L/100km during city traffic jams, and as low as 5.2L on the highway. A full tank lasts me more than a week, which is very budget-friendly considering fuel prices in Malaysia! Talking about the interior, I chose the black interior, which is both stain-resistant and stylish. The 9-inch touchscreen on the center console is very responsive, and connecting to CarPlay on the phone is super convenient. The seats are fabric, so they don't get as hot as leather seats in the summer, plus they provide great support, making long drives comfortable. The rear space is also quite spacious; on weekends, I take my family to Genting, and three adults can sit in the back without feeling cramped. In conclusion, this car is an excellent experience to use in Malaysia, whether it's for daily commutes or weekend getaways!

As the owner of a 2024 Yaris 1.5E, after driving it for three months, I’m really falling more and more in love with it! The exterior deserves full marks — the sharp LED headlights paired with the large air intake grille look particularly striking under Malaysia's blazing sun, and the side profile is very sleek. Whenever I park it near the LRT station, it always catches a few extra glances from passersby — it doesn't look like a car priced at just over 80,000 MYR at all. The performance is even more impressive. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with CVT transmission is super responsive in Kuala Lumpur’s city traffic. It accelerates smoothly and is not sluggish. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands; going uphill mid-mountain, the torque felt sufficient when the RPM hit 4,000. Even with five people fully loaded, it didn’t feel strained. On the highway at 110 km/h, the vehicle feels very stable, and the suspension absorbs bumps like those at toll gate speed humps effectively. It’s a significant improvement over my previous car in terms of comfort — full marks, no doubt. I’d deduct one point for the interior because there are a few hard plastic parts on the dashboard, but the overall design is very practical. The 9-inch touchscreen is responsive, and using Apple CarPlay for navigation to go to Petaling Street is super convenient. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats came in handy last week when helping a friend carry camping gear. Although the manual seat adjustments aren’t as convenient as electric ones, the seat’s support is adequate. Driving on the highway for two hours didn’t leave me with a sore back. At this price point, having 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera system is already a great deal!
