In today's compact hatchback market, consumers are demanding more balance — it needs to be fuel-efficient for daily commutes, have decent configurations, and safety assists must be up to modern standards. As a regular contender in this segment, the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G version comes with upgraded features and a more comprehensive safety system this time. Let’s see if it can hold its ground against competitors. The focus of this test drive is to evaluate its power response, space practicality, and whether the new features are truly useful.

First, let’s take a look at the exterior. The 2024 Yaris 1.5G retains Toyota's youthful design style in recent years but places more emphasis on refined details. The trapezoidal front grille is adorned with black honeycomb-patterned trims, surrounded by chrome strips that extend from the headlights to the grille's edges, paired with sharp LED headlamp units on both sides, making it highly recognizable. The side profile of the car displays smooth lines, and the waistline runs from the front fender through to the taillights, which, though not exaggerated, makes the body appear more elongated. The 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 195/50 R16 tires are well-proportioned and do not look too thin. The rear design is relatively simple, with horizontally aligned taillight assemblies whose internal LED light bars are quite eye-catching when illuminated. The black protective panel under the rear bumper and reflective strips on either side add a slight sporty vibe to the rear. Overall, the design is not overly aggressive, but it aligns with the aesthetic preferences of most people, making it very suitable as a daily commuter car.

Sitting inside, the interior style of the 2024 Yaris 1.5G leans towards practicality, without too many fancy designs, but the materials and workmanship are quite solid. The upper part of the dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, eliminating the feeling of cheapness in areas within reach. The central control screen is a 9-inch touchscreen, positioned relatively high, so you don't have to tilt your head down too much to check the navigation while driving, and the operation is fairly smooth. The multifunction steering wheel is leather-wrapped and provides a good grip—on the left are the multimedia control buttons, while the right side holds the buttons for the driving assist system. Additionally, there are paddle shifters which, although paired with a CVT transmission, allow for some driving fun when manually adjusting gears. The instrument cluster features the new Optitron display, which is clear and well-organized, making it easy to see information such as fuel consumption and range at a glance.

In terms of space, this car has a wheelbase of 2550mm, which is standard among its class. The front row seats offer decent support, and for passengers with a height of 175 cm, there is approximately a fist's worth of space for both headroom and legroom. The rear row space performs moderately; passengers of the same height sitting there will have about two fists' worth of legroom and less than a fist for headroom. It is adequate for everyday family use, but if three adults are seated for a long time, the middle seat occupant might feel a bit cramped. The trunk capacity is 286L, which can easily fit two 20-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold configuration, which can create more space for longer items when folded down. As for storage space, the door panels' storage compartments can hold two water bottles, and the central armrest box is deep enough to store small items like phones and wallets.

In terms of power, the 2024 Yaris 1.5G is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 107PS and a maximum torque of 140N·m, paired with a 7-speed CVT transmission. During daily driving, acceleration feels fairly nimble, and the throttle response is linear. Driving in urban areas, whether following traffic or overtaking, it doesn’t feel sluggish. When pressing the accelerator pedal harder, the transmission simulates the feel of shifting gears. Although it doesn’t have the explosive power of a turbocharged engine, the acceleration process is quite smooth, making it suitable for daily commuting. There are two driving modes, normal and sport. In sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive, and the RPM stays in a relatively higher range. Power delivery is quicker, but fuel consumption will increase slightly as a result.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel of this car is very precise, with minimal play, making it very agile and convenient for urban driving, such as turning and parking. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, which is tuned for comfort. It can absorb most of the minor vibrations when crossing speed bumps or bumpy roads, so you won’t feel too jolted. When driving on the highway, the car body remains relatively stable without feeling floaty. However, when making sharp turns, there is a bit of body roll, but it’s within a controllable range. As a family car, this performance is already quite good.

Safety features are one of the highlights of this car. It comes standard with 7 airbags, including front side airbags, rear side airbags, curtain airbags, and knee airbags, providing a strong sense of safety. In terms of driver assistance systems, it includes lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and active braking. When cruising on the highway, the lane departure warning provides timely alerts, and the active braking system can help you decelerate in case of an emergency, significantly improving driving safety. The 360-degree panoramic camera is also very practical, allowing you to clearly see your surroundings while parking, making it easy even for novice drivers.

Regarding fuel consumption, our test drive mainly involved a mix of city and highway driving, with an average fuel consumption of about 5.8L per 100 kilometers. It runs on regular 92-octane gasoline, which keeps daily operating costs low. Noise control is also good; wind and tire noise are not too noticeable when driving on the highway and won’t interfere with conversations among passengers inside the car. The seats are comfortable, and even long durations of sitting do not feel tiring. The car has automatic air conditioning, which cools effectively, and there are air vents for the rear seats as well, ensuring rear passengers stay cool during summer.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G is a well-rounded family car. Its exterior design is stylish, the interior is practical, the space is adequate, the power delivery is smooth, fuel consumption is economical, and it boasts rich safety features. Compared to other models in the same class, its safety features and cost-effectiveness are significant advantages, making it suitable for families prioritizing practicality and safety. If you're looking for a daily commuter family car, this is one worth considering.

Pros
Sleek design, streamlined body with LED headlights, metallic paint looks premium under the sunlight, attracts attention from passersby
Practical interior, 9-inch touchscreen with quick response, automatic air conditioning with strong cooling, physical button control panel is functional
Smooth and fuel-efficient performance, 1.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT combination provides smooth urban driving, fuel consumption as low as 4.5-5.8L/100km
Cons
Interior details need improvement, excessive use of plastic parts, lack of soft wrapping on the lower dashboard and passenger side, average texture
Cruise control functionality insufficient, only basic cruise control, no ACC adaptive system, manual control required during traffic jams on highways
CVT causes roaring during sudden acceleration, power output is smooth but lacks explosiveness, slightly weak when climbing Genting Highlands

As a 2024 Yaris 1.5G owner, after driving it for three months, I really like it more and more! First of all, I must give full marks for the exterior — the streamlined body with LED headlights stands out in KL’s evening traffic, and it catches attention every time I park on Jalan Bukit Bintang; my friends all say it looks much younger compared to the old model. I think a 4 out of 5 for the interior is very reasonable. The 9-inch touchscreen responds quickly, and the six speakers are clear enough for listening to Malay songs on the highway; however, there’s a bit too much plastic, especially below the center console. If they could add some soft padding, it would be perfect. But the keyless entry system and automatic air conditioning are super practical in Malaysia’s hot weather. Being able to turn on the air conditioning remotely via the app before getting in makes it cool and comfortable as soon as you sit down, which is very considerate. As for performance, it’s adequate for local roads. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT provides smooth starts in the congested areas of Subang Jaya without jerking. On weekends, it climbs halfway up Genting Highlands — although it doesn’t feel as punchy as a turbocharged engine, pressing harder on the accelerator delivers sufficient power. At 110km/h on the highway, it’s still stable. The only minor drawback is that the CVT makes a bit of a whine during sudden acceleration, but it’s perfectly fine for daily commuting. Fuel consumption is about 5.8L/100km, and a full tank is enough for a round trip from KL to Ipoh, which is very economical. Overall, having seven airbags and 360-degree cameras at this price point makes it reassuring and convenient to drive in Malaysia. I genuinely recommend it to young families!

As the owner of the 2024 Yaris 1.5G for three months, the most intuitive feeling is — **the exterior design really appeals to Malaysian aesthetics!** Every time I park it at the Lotus supermarket entrance or by the roadside at a café in PJ, someone always takes a second glance. The sharp LED headlights combined with the trapezoidal grille look particularly energetic under the afternoon sun in Kuala Lumpur. The side waistline flows from the front to the rear, and with 16-inch wheels, it appears sportier than the old version. It doesn't have the typical "grocery car" vibe of traditional B-segment cars. Last week, I drove a friend to Malacca. As soon as she got in, she said, "Your new car looks much better than my Vios, like a smaller Camry!" I'll give the interior 4 points because, overall, I'm satisfied, but there are some minor shortcomings in details. The 9-inch touchscreen on the center console responds quite quickly, and using CarPlay navigation to go to Petaling Street works smoothly. The air conditioning is also automatic — in Malaysia’s hot weather, you can press a button after getting in, and it cools down quickly, which is very practical. The seats are fabric, which is breathable and doesn’t make you feel stuffy (since it's over 30°C most of the year here), but the texture definitely doesn’t feel as premium as leather. Additionally, the passenger's storage compartment is a bit shallow, making it easy for a phone to slide out, but it's sufficient for holding wallets or keys. Overall, the exterior exceeds expectations, the interior is sufficient but could be perfect with some more detailed optimization. It’s very comfortable for daily traffic jams in KL or long drives on the highway to Johor Bahru.

As a 2024 Yaris 1.5G owner, after driving it for three months, I really like it more and more! The exterior design is completely my style — with Malaysia’s perennial blazing sun, the metallic silver body reflects light in a very premium way. The front LED headlights and blacked-out grille look sharp and energetic. When parked at Lalaport, passersby often give it a second glance. 😆 The interior is even more amazing! The 9-inch touchscreen is very responsive, the air conditioning panel uses physical buttons (much more practical than fully touch-based controls!), the seat fabric feels comfortable to the touch, and sitting for long periods doesn’t feel stuffy. In terms of safety, I’d give it a score of 4 because it only has a standard cruise control, not ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). On Kuala Lumpur’s congested highways, you still need to manually control the accelerator and brakes. If it had ACC, it would’ve been perfect. But the basic safety features are sufficient: 7 airbags, the 360 camera is a lifesaver when parking in the narrow alleys of PJ, and the automatic emergency braking system activated last week when I almost rear-ended a car on Jalan Bukit Bintang — its response was very quick. Overall, with this configuration at this price point, it’s really excellent for family use in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G, driving in Malaysia for almost half a year, I genuinely feel that I made the right choice! Let’s start with the performance, 5 stars without a doubt! Everyone knows the roads in Malaysia—traffic jams in KL city, bumpy rural roads, and occasionally hitting high speeds on the North-South Expressway. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT is super smooth in the city when following other cars, acceleration is not sluggish, and the throttle response is very linear during traffic, with no jerking at all. On the highway, it stays steady even at 110 km/h, and when overtaking, the power output is very smooth without any sudden bursts. The key point is the fuel efficiency—it only consumes about 5.8L/100km in the city with the air conditioning on, and on highways, it can drop to 4.5L/100km. This is super friendly for our daily commutes! The interior deserves 5 stars too! Stepping inside the car instantly feels comfortable. The soft-touch materials on the dashboard feel premium, the 9-inch touchscreen is highly responsive, and Apple CarPlay works flawlessly. The automatic air conditioning is a lifesaver in Malaysia’s hot weather, cooling the cabin within minutes. Although the front seats are manually adjustable, they provide great support, and you won’t feel back pain even on long trips. The rear seats can be folded 60:40, which is super convenient for occasionally carrying luggage. The attention to small details is impressive, like the large storage compartments in the doors that can easily fit phones and water bottles. For safety, I’d give it 4 stars—overall I’m satisfied but feel there’s room for improvement in small details. The car comes with 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking as standard features. Once in a rural area in Penang, I almost rear-ended a car when it braked suddenly, but the autonomous emergency braking intervened immediately. It gave me a scare, but it saved me! However, the cruise control is just a standard one. If it could be upgraded to adaptive cruise control, it would be perfect, and my feet would be more relaxed on highways. Overall, this car is really practical for Malaysia’s road conditions, and the cost-to-performance ratio is excellent. Highly recommended for friends looking at B-segment cars!

As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G, having driven it for almost three months, the overall experience has been pretty good! Let’s talk about safety first; giving it 4 stars feels reasonable — after all, it comes with 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and active braking. Once, in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, a motorbike suddenly darted out, and the active braking system immediately stopped the car. It gave me quite a scare but also a sense of reassurance. However, it would be perfect if it had full-range ACC. With the current cruise control, driving long distances on the North-South Expressway still requires manual acceleration and deceleration, which is a minor letdown. As for the interior, 4 stars also seem fair. The 9-inch touchscreen is quite responsive, and the automatic air conditioning works excellently during the hot days in Kuala Lumpur. The 60:40 split rear seats are handy for occasionally carrying some small luggage. However, there are slightly too many plastic parts, especially the piece in front of the front passenger seat — it feels a bit basic to the touch. Adding some soft padding there would make it better. Regarding the exterior, I chose the silver-gray color, which looks particularly striking under the Malaysian sun! The LED headlights have very high visibility during the day, and the 16-inch wheels paired with 195 tires make driving on rural roads feel adequate. The only area that I think could be improved is the rear bumper design. Adding a small diffuser would enhance the sporty feel. All in all, getting such a well-rounded car at this price point is really worth it!
