2024 Xpeng G6 Long Range Review

In recent years, competition in Malaysia's D-segment pure electric SUV market has intensified. Consumers demand both long range to handle inter-state travel and emphasize intelligent features and practical space. The 2024 Xpeng G6 Long-Range Version is designed precisely to meet these needs. Its core selling points include an official range of 570 kilometers, an 87.5kWh large battery, and advanced features such as heated rear seats. In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating its actual range performance, whether the chassis quality meets the needs of family users, and the daily practicality of its intelligent features.
Walking up to the car, the G6's exterior design leans towards a clean and tech-inspired aesthetic. The front face eliminates the traditional grille, replaced by a continuous LED daytime running light strip connecting the headlights on both sides. The LED matrix light source inside the headlight units supports automatic high and low beam switching, providing high recognizability. The side profile features smooth lines, with a sloping roofline extending from the A-pillar to the rear, avoiding excessive exaggeration. Paired with 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and 255/45 R20 tires, the car achieves a visual balance between sportiness and stability. The rear design complements the front, featuring continuous taillights that create a flowing effect when illuminated. The diffuser design beneath the rear bumper adds a sense of layering. Overall, the design avoids superfluous ornamentation, fitting well with the mainstream aesthetic of modern electric vehicles.
Opening the car door, the materials and configurations of the interior feel superior compared to other vehicles in the same price range. The dashboard combines soft-touch plastic and faux suede, with silver trim accents adding a touch of class that rivals 300,000 RMB-level vehicles. The 14.96-inch central touchscreen is the focal point of the interior, boasting a high resolution and smooth operation. It supports voice control for functions like air conditioning, navigation, and windows, with impressively accurate recognition and quick response. The instrument panel is a 10.25-inch fully digital display with a clean interface, showing key information like range, speed, and navigation, allowing the driver to quickly glance for easy reading. The front seats are leather-wrapped and offer six-way electric adjustment and four-way lumbar support. They also feature heating and ventilation functions, making long-distance driving less tiring on the back. The rear seats also have heating functions and adjustable backrest angles. The middle floor is almost entirely flat, providing ample legroom of more than two fists for passengers of 175cm height and about one fist of headroom. Long trips feel spacious, not cramped. The trunk has a regular capacity of 571L, which can be expanded to approximately 1500L by folding down the rear seats. It can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases and a few backpacks, enough for daily family use or short road trips.
The static performance is satisfactory, and the driving experience is also well-suited for family user needs. In terms of power, the rear-wheel-drive single motor offers a maximum output of 210kW (286HP) and a peak torque of 440N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.2 seconds. For daily driving in standard mode, the power response is very direct during start and low-speed phases. A light press on the accelerator provides sufficient acceleration power, and pressing harder for overtaking yields smooth linear power output without abrupt thrust. Switching to sport mode, the power output becomes more aggressive, offering a more pronounced push-back sensation during acceleration, ideal for occasional driving thrills. The suspension utilizes a front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent setup, tuned for comfort while retaining decent support. When driving on city roads, the suspension absorbs most shocks from speed bumps or uneven surfaces, ensuring the body remains relatively stable. When driving on highways with undulating surfaces, the chassis delivers excellent stability without feeling floaty. On curves, the suspension effectively controls body roll, and the precise steering aided by the rear-wheel-drive layout ensures above-average handling for an SUV.
Range and energy consumption are the core metrics of electric vehicles, and we conducted targeted tests this time. Starting with a full charge, the air conditioning was set to 24°C in auto mode, the driving mode was standard, and energy recovery was set to medium. When driving on urban roads, the drag caused by energy recovery is not noticeable, feeling almost the same as driving a fuel vehicle. During highway cruising at around 110 km/h, wind and tire noise were well-controlled, with actual energy consumption of about 18 kWh/100 km. After driving 200 km on the highway and 150 km in urban areas, the displayed remaining range was 180 km, achieving a range performance rate of nearly 90%, which is better than many electric vehicles of the same class. As for the fast charging test, using a 120 kW DC fast charging station, charging from 30% to 80% took only 25 minutes, which is close to the official claim of 0.33 hours (20 minutes), delivering excellent charging efficiency.
In terms of comfort details, the G6 performs well. The interior soundproofing is impressive, with external noise almost inaudible below 60 km/h, and at 120 km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are present but minimal, not affecting passenger conversations. The seats offer great support and cushioning; even after driving continuously for 2 hours, the back and legs remain comfortable and fatigue-free. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels. At the lowest level, the coasting feels similar to a fuel vehicle, making it easy for newcomers to adapt.
Overall, the XPeng G6 long-range version has significant advantages: the official range of 570 km and high achievement rate alleviate range anxiety; its rich intelligent features and comfortable driving experience suit family users. Priced around 200,000 RMB, it's more than 30,000 RMB cheaper than the Tesla Model Y rear-wheel drive version, yet offers richer configurations. Compared to competitors in the same class like the BYD Tang EV, the G6 accelerates faster, provides more comprehensive intelligent driving assistance functions, and delivers comparable space performance.
The target audience for this car is very clear: For family users who need an electric vehicle with a spacious interior, long range, and ample features to meet daily commuting and weekend road trips, it is a great choice. For young consumers who seek technology and driving pleasure without wanting to spend too much, the G6 also offers high value for money.
In conclusion, the XPeng G6 long-range version is a well-rounded D-class pure electric SUV without significant shortcomings. Excelling in range, features, and price, it is one of the top choices in the 200,000 RMB electric vehicle market.
