2025 Xpeng G6 Standard Range Review

As competition in Malaysia's D-segment electric vehicle market heats up, the demand from family users for long range, ample space, and high configurations continues to grow. The 2025 version of the Xiaopeng G6 Standard Range is specifically targeting this niche market. This car features an official range of 525km, 296PS rear-wheel drive power, and advanced intelligent configurations as its core selling points. Many potential buyers are curious whether it can strike a balance between performance and practicality in real-world use. This test drive focuses on these core aspects, restoring its real performance as a primary car for families through static experiences and dynamic testing.
First impressions of the G6 Standard Range reveal an overall design oriented towards simplicity and tech aesthetics. The front features a closed design with Xiaopeng's iconic through-type LED light strip in the center, which has high recognition when illuminated; the lower front lip is made of black plastic material, with slightly protruding lines adding a sporty touch. The side of the car exhibits the classic coupe-style SUV silhouette, with a waistline stretching from the front to the rear, paired with 20-inch multi-spoke rims and 255/45 R20 wide tires, giving it a sleek and stable visual effect. At the rear, the most eye-catching feature is the through-type taillight cluster, echoing the design of the front. The lower portion of the rear bumper includes decorative diffuser-style elements, further enhancing the sporty vibe. The lighting system uses entirely LED sources, including daytime running lights, front and rear headlights, and fog lights, providing sufficient brightness and a wide illumination range at night.
Step inside, and you'll find the interior primarily features black as the main color, highlighted with silver accents, creating a simple yet classy style. The dashboard adopts a layered design, with soft-touch injection-molded material on the upper part and hard plastic below. The gaps between the panels are even, and the craftsmanship is above average for its class. The 15.6-inch vertical central screen is the highlight of the interior. Its screen resolution is high, with good operation smoothness, and it supports voice control for air conditioning, navigation, and other functions. A small number of physical buttons are retained on the left side, mainly for controlling volume and air conditioning temperature, making operation easier while driving. The instrument panel features a 10.25-inch fully digital display, offering rich information such as range, speed, and driving modes. The seating configuration is a standout feature; both the driver and front passenger seats are adjustable in six directions and come with four-way lumbar support, heating, and ventilation functions. The leather material is soft, providing moderate support. The rear seats are also heated, and their backrests can be adjusted. A headrest and seatbelt are provided for the middle position, ensuring basic comfort even with five occupants.
The space performance aligns with the positioning of a D-segment vehicle. Its dimensions are 4758mm in length, 1920mm in width, and 1650mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2890mm. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable driving position, a 180cm passenger still has a headroom of one fist and two fingers, while the rear legroom exceeds two fists, and headroom remains at one fist, making it comfortable even for three adults. In terms of storage space, the door panels' storage slots can hold two water bottles, and the central armrest box is spacious enough to accommodate a 5.5-inch phone and small personal items. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 571L, which can be expanded to 1374L when the rear seats are folded down, easily fitting a stroller or suitcases. The interior is also equipped with dual front USB ports, rear Type-C ports, and a wireless charging pad, catering to daily charging needs.
Power-wise, the G6 Standard Range is equipped with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a maximum power of 218kW (296PS) and a peak torque of 440N·m. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds as per official data. In actual driving, the power response is quick at the start; a light push on the accelerator gives a noticeable push-back feeling. Acceleration remains strong in the mid-to-late stages, and the motor delivers torque quickly when you press the accelerator hard for overtaking. Accelerating from 80km/h to 120km/h on the highway is effortless. It offers three driving modes: Eco, Standard, and Sport. The Eco mode provides relatively smooth power delivery, suitable for daily commuting; the Sport mode improves pedal sensitivity and offers more direct power feedback, ideal for scenarios that demand driving fun.
The driving dynamics exceed expectations. The combination of front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively absorbs road bumps. The car body shows minimal movement when passing speed bumps or potholes, ensuring that rear passengers do not experience significant discomfort. The steering wheel offers precise handling with minimal dead angles, feeling light at low speeds and heavier at higher speeds with a balanced grip. The body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the strong road grip instills confidence in the driver. The braking system uses front and rear ventilated disc brakes. The brake pedal responds linearly, and during emergency braking, the car remains stable without noticeable forward pitching.
Range and charging are critical metrics for electric vehicles. We drove about half the distance on urban roads and half on highways, kept the air conditioning at 24°C throughout, and set the energy recovery system to the medium level in Eco mode. Ultimately, the actual range was approximately 450km, achieving around 85% of the official range, which met expectations. The official fast-charging time is 0.33 hours (20 minutes), and our test showed it took 22 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%, closely matching the official data. Slow charging takes 7.5 hours, suitable for overnight charging at home. In terms of power consumption, the city road conditions averaged around 16kWh/100km, highway conditions about 19kWh/100km, and combined consumption was 17.5kWh/100km, which is average for electric vehicles in its class.
The details on ride comfort are well-executed. The vehicle does a good job controlling tire and wind noise; it remains very quiet inside the cabin at speeds of up to 80km/h. Beyond 100km/h, wind noise becomes noticeable but does not hinder normal conversations. The seats offer excellent support, and even during extended drives, the lower back does not feel fatigued. The rear air conditioning vents come with independent controls and easy temperature adjustments, ensuring comfort even when the rear seats are fully occupied. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels: low, medium, and high. The low level is similar to the gliding feel of fuel vehicles, with no obvious dragging sensation, making it friendly for new drivers.
Overall, the G6 Standard Range offers strong core advantages: its 2890mm long wheelbase provides spacious room, making it suitable for families; the 296PS rear-wheel-drive power strikes a balance between performance and range; standard features include L2-level assisted driving, heated and ventilated seats for both front and rear rows, and a 360° panoramic camera, providing high value for money compared to other D-segment electric cars in its class. When compared to the Tesla Model Y rear-wheel-drive version in the same price range, the G6 Standard Range excels with its more comprehensive seat configurations and slightly higher range achievement rate. However, the Model Y has an edge in terms of brand recognition and the maturity of its autonomous driving assistance system.
This car is suitable for family users who value a balance of space, configuration, and range, especially for those who need a primary vehicle that can handle both daily commuting and long-distance travel. At the same time, its sporty exterior and high-tech interior can also meet the preferences of young users for aesthetics and intelligence. As the flagship model of XPeng in the D-Segment, the G6 Standard Range proves its competitiveness with its balanced performance, making it a reliable choice for family electric vehicles.
