In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's D-segment pure electric SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers not only value brand and range but also have higher demands for smart features and practicality in terms of space. The 2024 Xpeng G6 Standard Range, priced at less than RM170,000, comes equipped with an LFP battery, a 259 PS rear-wheel-drive motor, and a standard 18-speaker audio system, making this combination of features definitely worth experiencing. The main focus of this test drive is to see whether it can strike a balance between battery range, handling, and daily practicality, providing D-segment electric vehicle users with a more cost-effective option.

Approaching the vehicle, the overall design of the G6 is simple yet distinctive. The front end lacks a traditional grille and instead features a full-width LED daytime running light and sharp split headlights on both sides, creating a wider visual effect. When illuminated, it easily stands out among traffic. The side profile has smooth lines, and the fastback design extending from the A-pillar to the rear does not appear abrupt while also reducing wind resistance. The door handles are flush with the body and pop out automatically when unlocked and retract when the vehicle is locked, adding a touch of technological appeal and making the sides cleaner. The rear also features full-width taillights, while the diffuser-like design below adds a sporty vibe. Overall, the design aligns well with the mainstream aesthetics of modern electric vehicles.

Opening the car door, the interior gives a neat and practical first impression. The center console is centered around a 14.96-inch floating screen, which is tilted about 10 degrees toward the driver, so operating it doesn’t require significant head movements. There are very few physical buttons in the entire control area, with most functions integrated into the car's infotainment system. Only the air conditioning quick adjustment area retains physical buttons for easier blind operation. As for interior materials, the upper part of the dashboard and the inside of the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, providing a good tactile feel. Both the driver's and co-driver's seats support 6-way electric adjustment and 4-way lumbar support adjustment, along with heating and ventilation functions. After testing, the seats offer good support and wrapping, making long periods of sitting comfortable.

Space is one of the G6's advantages, as its wheelbase reaches 2890mm. When the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable driving position, a 175cm tall passenger sitting in the back will still have more than two fist-widths of legroom. Although the fastback design might slightly affect headroom, around one fist of space remains, so it doesn’t feel overly cramped. The floor at the middle seat in the rear row is nearly flat, allowing the middle passenger’s feet to rest comfortably. The trunk has a standard capacity of 571 liters, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases and some other small items. The rear seats also support a 4/6 split-fold configuration, which can expand the storage space to accommodate moving or long-distance travel needs. The rear row also comes equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, showcasing attention to detail.

Start the vehicle, shift into D gear, and lightly press the accelerator pedal to immediately feel the responsiveness of the rear-drive motor. The 259 PS power and 440 N·m of torque make this over 2-ton car feel quick on takeoff. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration is 6.6 seconds, and in real-world conditions, stepping on the pedal gives a noticeable push-back sensation, making overtaking confident. There are three driving modes to choose from: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, the accelerator pedal feels relatively soft, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the power response is more direct, ideal for those moments when you want to enjoy driving. The steering wheel has a moderate level of feedback with minimal dead zones, offering precise handling that doesn’t feel cumbersome to operate.

In terms of the chassis, the independent suspension combination of front double wishbone and rear multi-link is not uncommon in this segment of electric vehicles, but the G6's tuning leans towards a balance between comfort and sportiness. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the fine vibrations, and the body does not have noticeable bounces, maintaining decent comfort. During cornering, the suspension offers sufficient support, controlling body roll well without making passengers feel uncomfortable. At high speeds, the chassis stability is good and does not give off a floating sensation.

As for the range, the official figure is 435 km. During our test drive, which was primarily on urban roads and some highways, we had the air conditioning and music on the entire time with an average speed of about 60 km/h. The displayed range attainment rate was close to 85%, which is relatively stable performance. The fast charging time is 0.33 hours, which means it takes roughly 20 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%, making daily recharging quite convenient. Slow charging takes 7.5 hours, suitable for plugging in after returning home at night.

During driving, the G6’s noise control is well executed. At low speeds, the motor is almost silent, while at high speeds there is some wind and tire noise, but both are within an acceptable range and do not affect normal conversations among passengers. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels. The highest level has a strong recuperation force, causing the vehicle to decelerate significantly when the accelerator pedal is released, resembling the feeling of braking in fuel vehicles. Once accustomed, it can reduce the frequency of using the brake pedal. The ventilated and heated seats are useful in different weather conditions, with the ventilation function being particularly practical in Malaysia's hot climate.

In terms of safety features, the G6 comes standard with seven airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, lane change assist, and other functions. The ACC adaptive cruise control is very convenient to use on highways, as it can automatically follow other vehicles and maintain a safe distance, reducing driving fatigue. The 360-degree surround view camera offers high resolution, allowing drivers to clearly see the surroundings when parking. The automatic parking feature is also quite practical as it can recognize standard parking spaces and automatically complete parking maneuvers.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2024 XPeng G6 Standard Range lies in its balance. Compared to other pure electric SUVs in the same class, it is more affordable but does not compromise on features. Especially its seat comfort features and intelligent safety configurations are leading within its price range. It offers excellent space and its range can meet the needs of daily commuting and short trips. In terms of handling, its rear-wheel-drive layout makes it more enjoyable to drive than front-wheel-drive models, and the chassis tuning strikes a balance between comfort and sportiness.

This vehicle is suitable for a wide range of people. Firstly, it appeals to cost-conscious families, as its spaciousness, abundant safety features, and practical range meet the needs of daily family outings. Secondly, it attracts tech-savvy and comfort-seeking young people because features like hidden door handles, a large central control screen, and comfortable seats are aligned with their preferences. Additionally, for users who need a car for daily commuting and occasional long-distance trips, the G6's fast charging capability and range performance are up to the task.

In summary, the XPeng G6 Standard Range is a pure electric SUV that strikes an excellent balance between price, features, space, and performance. It does not have any significant shortcomings and performs well in all aspects, making it a strong contender for users looking to purchase a D-segment pure electric SUV.

As a G6 standard range owner, I've been driving in Malaysia for three months now, and overall, I'm very satisfied! The exterior is more rounded and refined compared to the Model Y, definitely worth 4 points; the interior is minimalist yet solidly built, the 14.96-inch screen is smooth, but the panoramic sunroof can be a bit glaring in the summer (minor complaint). In terms of performance, the 6.6-second acceleration on rear-wheel drive makes overtaking during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour manageable, and the 435km range is sufficient for a single trip to Penang. Fast charging for 20 minutes is very convenient. The safety features are fully loaded, and the automatic parking saved me in a tight spot near the Twin Towers. Previously, I drove a fuel-powered SUV, and after switching to the G6, I cut my fuel expenses in half—amazing!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and child to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. As we just got on the mountain road, we encountered a rainstorm, and the road became very slippery. Driving with ACC on, the 6.6-second acceleration felt very powerful during uphill climbs. The rear-wheel drive provided steady traction in curves, but during sudden acceleration, the rear of the car would slightly swerve; deducting 1 point for performance is justified. The ventilated and heated genuine leather seats in the interior were all turned on, and the child slept soundly in the back seat, though the central control screen occasionally lagged—4 points are reasonable. During the rainstorm, the automatic braking suddenly intervened because the truck ahead braked suddenly. With 7 airbags and a full set of active safety features, 5 points for safety is well deserved.

Previously, I drove a Japanese fuel SUV, but after switching to the G6 Standard Range version, it's a total "pleasant surprise"! Performance gets a 4—rear-wheel drive, 6.6 seconds 0-100 km/h, overtaking during Kuala Lumpur's rush hour is a breeze. However, acceleration beyond 120 km/h on the highway feels a bit weak, but it's sufficient for daily use. Interior scores a solid 5, with NAPPA leather seats featuring ventilation and heating; even in Kuala Lumpur's 35°C weather, it doesn't burn your back when you sit down. The rear seats are also adjustable for reclining, and my family says it's way more comfortable than the old car. Safety is top-notch with a 5; last week, I nearly rear-ended someone on the Penang highway, but the active braking system stopped the car instantly. With 7 airbags and full-scenario AEB, it really offers peace of mind. Exterior gets a 4; the fastback design has a high head-turning rate, but the rear design is a bit conservative. Minor complaint: the panoramic sunroof's sunshade has to be pulled manually, which is a bit inconvenient. Took the kid to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and with a 435 km range, it covered the round trip with 50 km left. A quick charge of 20 minutes topped it up completely, leaving no range anxiety at all!
