In the increasingly competitive C-Segment electric vehicle market in Malaysia, consumers are becoming more and more clear about their demand for "high cost-effectiveness" and "practical configurations"—hoping that electric vehicles can cover daily commuting and short weekend trips without compromising on safety and intelligent features. The 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium targets precisely this demand. With a price of RM 69,800, standard L2-level driver assistance, and a 16-inch central control screen, it has become an unmissable option in the same price segment. In this test drive, we focus on verifying: Can its actual range meet daily usage needs? How practical are the configurations? Is its dynamic performance suitable for urban commuting?

Upon first encountering the e.Mas 5 Premium, its overall design leans towards a simple family-oriented style without overly exaggerated lines. The front features a closed grille, with the Proton brand logo embedded in the center. The LED headlights on both sides are connected by a thin chrome strip that enhances the visual width. The lower front bumper retains a trapezoidal air intake, with L-shaped daytime running lights on the sides for good recognition. The side profile features smooth lines with a waistline extending from the A-pillar to the rear. The 16-inch wheels paired with 205/60 R16 tires align with its family-oriented positioning. Hidden door handles reduce wind resistance while enhancing the refined appearance. At the rear, the LED taillights also adopt a penetrating design, echoing the front; a black protective panel at the lower edge of the bumper adds a touch of crossover style. The lighting system features LED as standard across all models, along with automatic headlights and daytime running lights. The brightness at night is sufficient, exhibiting strong practicality.

Inside, the interior design emphasizes simplicity. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and adorned with silver trim, providing a decent tactile experience. The most striking feature in the central control area is the 16-inch FHD touchscreen, which offers high screen resolution and smooth operation. It supports the Sound Plus function and is paired with six speakers, achieving above-average sound quality within the same price range. The instrument cluster consists of an 8.8-inch LED digital display that clearly shows vehicle speed, range, and driving assistance status with a simple and easy-to-read interface. As for features, Keyless Operation, automatic air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, power-folding side mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers are all standard, enhancing daily convenience. The front seats offer manual adjustment, and the cushioning is moderately soft, ensuring comfortable long-duration seating.

Interior space is adequate for its C-Segment positioning. The vehicle’s dimensions measure 4135mm×1805mm×1580mm, with a wheelbase of 2650mm. A front-row passenger with a height of 175cm will have a headroom of a fist and two fingers, alongside ample legroom. In the back row, a passenger of the same height will have a headroom of one fist and legroom of two fists, while the nearly flat rear floor ensures that a maximum load of three passengers will not feel overly cramped. The trunk has a regular capacity of 375L, which expands to 1320L when the rear seats are folded down, accommodating items such as baby strollers or two 28-inch suitcases, catering well to family short-trip needs. As for storage features, door bins can hold two bottles, the central armrest box provides sufficient depth, and there is a wireless charging area in the front row, ensuring excellent practicality.

In terms of power, it is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 85kW (116PS) and a maximum torque of 150N·m, featuring a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout. There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, power output is smooth, suitable for urban commuting, and the accelerator response is slightly slower; in Normal mode, the power is moderate with light starts, offering smooth 0-60km/h acceleration and no pressure when overtaking in the city; in Sport mode, power response becomes quicker, and the official 0-100km/h acceleration is listed at 5.9 seconds, which performs well among electric vehicles in the same price range. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson + rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension can filter out most vibrations, and the body does not exhibit significant bouncing. At high speeds, the chassis is stable, and during turns, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range without any sense of instability.

In the range and charging tests, the official pure electric range is 325km. We tested under 50% urban driving and 50% highway conditions with the air conditioning at 24°C on automatic mode, and achieved about 85% of the range, covering an actual 276km. This is sufficient for a week's commute (50km/day). The fast-charging time is 0.35 hours (about 21 minutes) to charge from 30% to 80%, while a full charge with slow charging takes 3.9 hours. The charging efficiency meets household needs. In terms of energy consumption, the city performance is about 13kWh/100km, while on the highway it is about 15kWh/100km. Overall, energy consumption is well controlled.

Driving assistance configurations are a highlight, with all configurations equipped with Level 2 assisted driving features, including ACC adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and forward collision warning. During actual usage, the ACC performs well in maintaining stable following distance at highway speeds with smooth speed adjustments. The lane departure warning is sensitive and timely, effectively alerting the driver. The 360-degree parking camera has high clarity, and combined with rear parking sensors, parking becomes easy for beginners. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are nearly inaudible below 60km/h. Above 80km/h, wind noise increases slightly, but it does not affect conversations inside the car. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels, with the highest level providing moderate recovery strength without a noticeable dragging sensation, making it suitable for daily use.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium are its "full configuration" and "outstanding cost-effectiveness"—with a price of RM 69,800, you can get features like Level 2 assisted driving, a 16-inch central control screen, and 6 airbags. Competing models in the same price range (such as the BYD Dolphin and Aion Y Younger) either have fewer features or are priced higher. Its dynamic performance leans towards comfort, the range meets daily needs, and the space is suitable for family use.

The target audience is clear: families with a budget of around RM 70,000 who value features and practicality, or young professionals who have recently started working and need a dual-purpose car for commuting and family use. If you do not require ultra-long range and care more about everyday convenience and safety, the e.Mas 5 Premium would be a great choice.

Overall, the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium is a "well-balanced and without shortcomings" household electric vehicle. It attracts consumers with its high cost-performance ratio and rich features, standing out in the same price range. It is a reliable choice for family commuting and short trips.

Pros
Interior meets demands: 16-inch center control screen is clear and non-reflective, leather seats are comfortable and lumbar-supportive, rear air conditioning vents are considerate
Comprehensive safety features: Practical automatic braking and 360-degree imaging, 6 airbags + lane departure warning enhance safety
Practical driving assistance: ACC cruise control + lane keeping reduce highway stress, suitable for long-distance travel
Cons
The raised floor in the middle of the rear row affects the seating experience of the middle passenger
The car paint is relatively thin and prone to scratches; small stones hitting it may cause marks
The damping feeling of the co-driver’s storage box is insufficient, and there is an abnormal noise when opening and closing, which affects the texture

As the owner of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium, having driven it for almost three months, I genuinely feel the interior and safety features are perfectly tailored for Malaysians! First, about the interior, the 16-inch central control screen makes watching shows during KL traffic jams super enjoyable. The resolution is high enough, and it doesn’t reflect under the sun. The seats are made of soft leather; spending an hour in traffic on Federal Highway to and from work every day, my back doesn’t even feel sore—unlike when I had to use lumbar support with my old car. The most thoughtful feature is the rear air conditioning vent. Last week, I took my parents to Genting, and even with them sitting in the back, they didn’t feel hot. This detail from Proton is indeed more considerate compared to many Japanese cars. The safety features give me peace of mind! Last month, when I was on the Penang island ring road, I almost got hit by a motorcycle that suddenly changed lanes. The active braking system beeped and helped me stop immediately. My palms were sweating out of shock, but thankfully, nothing happened. There’s also a 360-degree camera. When parking in the narrow alleys of Petaling Street, every little stone by the roadside is clearly visible. No more getting out of the car to check the position. With six airbags and lane departure warnings equipped as standard, paired with ACC cruise control and lane-keeping assist while driving on highways to Johor Bahru with my child, I don’t even have to keep pressing the accelerator—it’s so much more relaxing. All in all, these two aspects really leave no room for complaints, absolutely worth the RM69,800 price!

As a Malaysian car owner, I’ve been driving the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium for two months, and overall, I’m quite satisfied! Speaking of safety, the traffic congestion during rush hours in Kuala Lumpur is really overwhelming. There were several instances when the car in front braked suddenly, but the autonomous braking system intervened in time — gave me a scare but saved my wallet. With 6 airbags and lane departure warning, I feel much more at ease during long trips on the North-South Highway. Totally deserves a 4-star rating, though it would be perfect if it had automatic parking! As for the interior, I really like it. The 16-inch central control screen doesn’t reflect under Malaysia’s blazing sun and operates as smoothly as a smartphone. Using Waze for navigation or connecting to Spotify to listen to music is super convenient. The seats are leather, and even during long drives, they don’t feel stuffy. However, the floor in the middle of the rear is a bit raised, so the person in the middle has to compromise slightly when three people are seated. The storage space design is quite thoughtful — there’s a wireless charging pad for phones and cup holders. A 4-star rating is fair! As for the exterior, Proton’s design is on point this time! The LED headlights are highly recognizable during the daytime, and the car’s body lines are sleek. Even when parked next to a Lotus showroom, it doesn’t look inferior! However, the paint is a bit thin — last time I was in Klang Valley, a small stone left a minor mark. But overall, the aesthetics are still top-notch, definitely deserving of 4 stars!

As one of the first owners of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium, after driving it for almost three months, I genuinely feel that this car is very user-friendly in Malaysia! Appearance gets 4 points – The overall design is quite youthful, the LED headlights and the through-type taillights are highly recognizable during nights in KL city, and the car's body lines are smooth. I just wish the small rear spoiler could be a bit bigger to look sportier. But for daily commuting, it's already eye-catching enough; every time I park near the LRT station, someone always glances at it~ Interior also gets 4 points, the 16-inch central control screen is fantastic! Watching YouTube and using CarPlay without lag during traffic jams on Jalan Bukit Bintang is just wonderful. The seats are leather, and even in KL's 35°C weather, it's not stuffy when you get in. However, I wish the damping on the passenger storage compartment could be more refined; the opening and closing sound is a bit "clunky." It's not a major issue but could be improved in terms of details~ The most surprising thing is the performance, it deserves 5 points! The official 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds is no exaggeration – Last time, when I overtook a trailer on the North-South Expressway, pressing the accelerator hard made the car instantly "leap" forward. The power response is much faster than my previous gasoline car! Also, when driving on the bumpy sections of the East Coast Expressway, the independent suspension on both front and rear absorbed the impacts excellently. Even my mom, sitting in the back seat, didn't feel dizzy. The range of 325km is enough for me to go to Penang and back (charging to 80% at a rest stop in just 30 minutes), so there's absolutely no range anxiety~ In conclusion, as an all-electric model from Proton, the performance at this price point is really worth it for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium
As the owner of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium, driving in Malaysia for three months, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! On Malaysian highways, it's common to encounter cars suddenly changing lanes. Last time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard. My car immediately activated the automatic emergency braking and came to a steady stop, it really saved me! Also, its 360-degree camera provides great visibility when parking in the narrow alleys of Kuala Lumpur, making even small motorbikes on the roadside clearly visible. I'm no longer afraid of scratches. I’m also very satisfied with the interior. The 16-inch central control screen is considered quite large among cars in the same class, and it makes navigating maps particularly clear, with very responsive operation. The leather seats feel very comfortable, and in Malaysia's hot weather, the seat ventilation function is a delight to use in summer! The rear row has plenty of space too. When taking my family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, my parents said it wasn't cramped sitting in the back. The overall workmanship is very refined, without that cheap plastic feel. Proton has really put effort into this!
