The competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has intensified in recent years. Consumers not only value space and practicality but also increasingly demand smart features and electrification experiences. The 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (hereinafter referred to as Model Y RWD), as the brand's key volume model in the local market, may not feature significant exterior upgrades this time, but its optimized core configurations and stable range performance remain the focal points of consumer attention. The primary objective of this test drive is to evaluate the vehicle's actual performance in daily commuting and family travel scenarios to determine if it can maintain the market advantages of the Model Y series.

From an exterior perspective, the Model Y RWD continues Tesla's distinctive minimalist design style, with sleek lines and a high-tech aesthetic. The front fascia still features a closed grille paired with sharp LED headlamps, ensuring high recognizability. The side profile is free of unnecessary decorations, with a waistline extending from the fenders to the rear, complemented by 19-inch wheels, giving it a neat and sharp appearance. The full-width LED taillights at the rear are a design highlight, visually extending the width when illuminated, aligning with the SUV's bold and spacious positioning. Notably, the car's paintwork maintains Tesla's consistent standards, with glossiness and texture ranking above average among vehicles in the same electric segment.

Sitting inside, the interior styling of the Model Y RWD remains focused on "minimalism," with virtually no physical buttons on the center console. All functions are integrated into the 15-inch central touchscreen. The interior materials use primarily soft-touch surfaces, paired with matte finish panels, providing a reasonably refined feel. The front seat supports electric adjustment and heating functions, with good backrest and cushion support, ensuring comfort during long drives. Rear seats also come with heating features and can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split configuration, expanding trunk capacity to 848L, which can easily accommodate items such as strollers and suitcases. In terms of space, the 2891mm wheelbase provides ample rear legroom, and the 172mm minimum ground clearance ensures good passability, making it suitable for various road conditions in Malaysia.

When the vehicle is started, the power response of the Model Y RWD is very direct. It is equipped with a rear-drive motor delivering a maximum power of 194kW (263.7PS) and a peak torque of 340N·m, with an officially rated 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds. During actual driving, the initial power output is smooth and robust, with noticeable thrust when the accelerator pedal is pressed down hard, allowing overtaking maneuvers to be executed cleanly and efficiently. The vehicle offers three driving modes: Comfort, Standard, and Sports, each with significantly different power output dynamics. The Comfort mode leans towards smoothness, making it suitable for daily commuting, while the Sports mode provides more responsive throttle behavior, ideal for highway driving.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel of the Model Y RWD is precise with minimal play, and the car maintains good posture during cornering. The combination of front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension smoothly absorbs road bumps. When traversing speed bumps or uneven roads, the vehicle's vibrations are not overly pronounced. Even on continuous curves, the suspension provides adequate support, keeping body roll under control. Noise insulation is a highlight; during low-speed driving, motor noise is nearly inaudible, and while wind and tire noise are noticeable at high speeds, they are not harsh, meeting the comfort needs of family vehicles.

Range and energy consumption are the points that electric vehicle users care about the most. The Model Y RWD is equipped with a 60kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and the official pure electric range is 455km. In our test under mixed road conditions (50% urban commuting + 50% highway driving), with air conditioning and music on throughout the journey, the final range achievement rate was about 85%, and the actual range was approximately 387km, showing stable performance. The energy consumption per 100km was around 13.2kWh, which is not much different from the official 12.7kWh, meeting expectations. It is worth noting that the vehicle supports charging from a 220V/230V household power supply, taking about 10 hours to fully charge in fast-charging mode, making it suitable for users with fixed charging conditions.

In terms of safety features, the Model Y RWD performs comprehensively. It comes standard with seven airbags (including a knee airbag), lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, and other functions. The 360-degree panoramic camera and front and rear radar also make parking easier. In addition, the HEPA air filter can effectively filter particles in the air, which is a practical feature for Malaysia's year-round hot and humid weather and occasional haze.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Model Y RWD lie in its simple and user-friendly intelligent system, stable range performance, and comprehensive safety features. Compared to competitors like the Volvo XC40 Recharge and BMW iX1 in the same class, the Model Y RWD offers more space and a better charging network. Although its interior luxury falls slightly short of the other two, it has a higher cost performance. This car is suitable for users who prioritize family practicality, have long daily commuting distances, and seek a sense of technology—whether it's for daily school runs, weekend road trips, or long highway drives, it can handle all with ease.

In general, the 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD is a very well-rounded electric SUV with no significant weaknesses. It meets the needs of most users in terms of space, performance, safety, and intelligent features. If you are looking for an electric vehicle suitable for family use, the Model Y RWD is worth considering.

After driving the 2025 Model Y RWD for two months, it's got plenty of power for commuting and overtaking. The back seat fits three people comfortably. The HEPA filter blocks heat and dust from the road. Fast charging takes 10 hours for a full charge, providing a range of 455 km, and charging once a week is sufficient. The only small regret is occasionally having to take a detour to find a Supercharger, but it's acceptable.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. The mountain roads in the early morning were still wet with night rain. Although the rear-wheel drive of the Model Y felt less stable on slippery curves compared to all-wheel drive, its 263-horsepower output was brisk enough, and there was no sense of struggle when climbing slopes. The minimalist design of the interior grows on you, and the 15-inch screen made controlling the air conditioning and navigation very convenient. The HEPA filter removed the moisture and earthy smell from the mountain fog. However, the 10-hour fast charging time is indeed a bit of a concern when looking for a station in the small town. Even so, with a 455-kilometer range, it was sufficient for a round trip. Overall, it's a very competent family car.

Previously, driving a fuel-powered SUV during the morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur made me doubt life, but switching to the 2025 Model Y completely freed me — the single-pedal mode follows other vehicles smoothly, the motor torque responds instantly, and even vehicles cutting in have to give way. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 172mm ground clearance easily handles mountain roads and gravel, the 5.9-second acceleration makes overtaking so confident, and with a range of 455km, there’s still 100+km left after a round trip to Genting, no anxiety at all. The interior is minimalist yet practical, the 15-inch screen is easy to operate, and the rear heated seats are super warm when enjoying the breeze by the beach in Penang. However, there are a few drawbacks: the large screen occasionally lags, and fast charging takes about 10 hours, which feels a bit long. But with the EV subsidies in Malaysia, buying a C-class SUV for 190,000 MYR, plus the 8-year battery warranty and the HEPA filter for haze protection, it’s absolutely amazing!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. The mountain road was slippery after the rain, but the 5.9-second acceleration felt powerful when overtaking on the uphill, and the rear-wheel drive grip was very stable. The 172mm ground clearance handled potholes without scraping the chassis. However, the car paint is thin, and a tree branch on the roadside left a mark (appearance -1 point). The interior is simple but feels slightly plasticky (interior -1 point). On the bright side, the 15-inch screen provides super-clear navigation for road conditions, and the heated rear seats kept my child warm throughout the journey without complaining. The 455km range was sufficient for the round trip with over 100km left, and a 1-hour fast charge is enough for daily use. Overall, very satisfied.
