BMW X1 2020 Review

The C-segment SUV market has been consistently booming locally in recent years, with family users having clearer demands for space, features, and brand appeal. The 2020 BMW X1 sDrive18i is a model that targets this specific market segment. As the entry-level version of the X1 series, it comes with a relatively affordable price (RM 220,800) and offers a wealth of intelligent safety configurations and practical features. Many potential buyers are curious whether it can balance the allure of the BMW brand while meeting all the needs of daily family use. This time, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation through a static experience and dynamic test drive to assess the actual performance of this car.
From the exterior, the 2020 X1 sDrive18i retains the classic design language of BMW SUVs, with an overall style that leans towards stability while still showcasing distinct details. The front face features a twin-kidney grille paired with a blackened lower bumper, creating a touch of sportiness; the side profile has smooth lines, with a length of 4,447mm and a wheelbase of 2,670mm to ensure a spacious interior. The rear LED tail lights are arranged horizontally, echoing the design of the front, and are equipped with rear fog lights to enhance safety in adverse weather conditions. The lighting system includes standard LED headlights and daytime running lights, with an automatic headlight feature that switches quickly when entering or exiting tunnels, adding to its practicality.
Stepping into the interior, the layout is driver-oriented, with the center console tilted towards the driver's seat for easy access. In terms of materials, the upper part of the center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and decorated with silver trim, making the overall texture meet expectations for this segment. The 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports Bluetooth connectivity, has a smooth response, and the Harman Kardon 6-speaker system performs well above average in the same class. As for configurations, keyless entry, a 5.7-inch high-definition TFT instrument panel, electrically adjustable front seats (with memory function), rear air vents, and more are all standard, maximizing daily convenience.
Space is one of the strengths of the X1. The 2,670mm wheelbase provides ample legroom in the rear; a 175cm tall passenger can sit with a two-fist gap between their knees and the front seat. The headroom is also adequate, and even with the standard single sunroof open, rear passengers still have one fist of clearance above their heads. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-fold configuration, and when folded down, the trunk capacity expands from 505 liters to a flat space with a depth of 1.8 meters, easily accommodating strollers or suitcases. Interior storage compartments are also abundant, with the front center armrest console and door pockets offering ample capacity, making it convenient to charge phones and store personal items.
In terms of dynamic performance, the 1.5L three-cylinder turbocharged engine outputs 140PS horsepower, with maximum torque peaking at 4,200 rpm. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The power response during start-up is not particularly aggressive, but it is completely sufficient for daily commuting; switching to sport mode increases throttle sensitivity, and deep acceleration during overtaking provides a noticeable sense of thrust. The 0-100km/h acceleration time is officially 9.6 seconds, and actual tests show little difference from the official figure. The transmission's shifting logic is clear, with almost no noticeable jerks during normal driving, only occasionally showing slight jitters when crawling at low speeds.
In terms of handling, the tuning of the front MacPherson independent suspension leans towards comfort; when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension can effectively filter out most vibrations, providing a relatively smooth experience for rear passengers. The steering feel is precise, with minimal play in the steering wheel, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering, maintaining BMW’s consistent handling standards. Fuel economy performance is average, with a fuel consumption of approximately 8.5L/100km under congested urban conditions, which can drop to around 6L on highways, consistent with the official 6.3L combined fuel consumption expectations.
In specialized tests, braking performance was stable, with a braking distance of approximately 38 meters from 100-0km/h, and minimal brake fade after consecutive braking. Regarding active safety features, lane departure warning, lane change assist, and active braking functions are all very responsive, effectively reducing the risk of accidents during daily driving. Noise control is well-executed, and at highway speeds of 120km/h, wind and tire noise inside the cabin are within acceptable ranges, not disrupting normal conversation.
Compared to vehicles in the same class, the advantages of the 2020 X1 sDrive18i lie in its brand recognition, spacious interior, and comprehensive safety features. Although the 1.5T engine is less powerful than the higher-spec sDrive20i M SPORT, its price is RM 23,000 lower, and the rear seats support split-folding, enhancing practicality. For budget-conscious consumers who prioritize household utility, the sDrive18i offers superior cost-effectiveness.
Overall, the 2020 BMW X1 sDrive18i is a highly balanced family SUV. It boasts BMW's premium brand image while meeting family users' needs for space, configuration, and safety. It is suitable for those needing a comfortable daily commuter car, a vehicle for weekend family outings, and who also care about brand image, particularly families within the 30-40 age range. If you’re looking for a C-segment SUV that balances style and practicality, the X1 sDrive18i is worth considering.
