BMW X3 2022 Review

In Malaysia's D-Segment luxury SUV market, consumers pay attention to brand prestige while valuing practical features. The 2022 BMW X3 sDrive20i M Sport is priced at RM 315,800, making it the most value-for-money option in the lineup. It retains the sporty exterior of the M Sport package while offering a wealth of smart configurations as standard. In this test drive, we focus on verifying whether it can strike a balance between everyday family comfort and BMW's signature driving quality under a limited budget.
Approaching the vehicle, its dimensions of 4708mm×1891mm×1676mm are standard within its class, while the 2864mm wheelbase ensures ample interior space. The M Sport package is the core highlight of the exterior, featuring a blacked-out kidney grille design paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving the front fascia an aggressive look. The side profile has smooth lines, and the 20-inch alloy wheels (front tire specifications: 245/45 R20) enhance the visual impact. The waistline extends from the fender to the rear, improving the layering of the body. At the rear, the blacked-out LED taillights and dual exhaust setup echo each other, while the diffuser design under the rear bumper further reinforces the sporty attributes.
Stepping inside, the interior continues BMW's family design style with a simple and tidy overall layout. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with metallic trim, reflecting its luxurious positioning. The 10.25-inch touchscreen center console is the visual centerpiece, supporting CarPlay connectivity with smooth operation. The fully digital instrument cluster displays vehicle stats, navigation, and other information with a clear and easy-to-read interface. In terms of features, the tri-zone automatic climate control system allows separate temperature adjustments for the front and rear seats. The front seats are electrically adjustable with memory functions, and the rear seats come with air conditioning vents, catering to the comfort needs of family users. Storage spaces are practical, with door pockets accommodating water bottles, a spacious center armrest box, and a wireless charging pad in the front row. The rear seating space is generous; passengers measuring 175cm tall will have a legroom of approximately two fists and headroom of about one fist. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 550L, which can be expanded to 1600L by folding down the rear seats, making it suitable for long trips or transporting large items.
The powertrain features a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum power of 184PS and a peak torque of 290N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the throttle response is swift during takeoff, allowing smooth acceleration even with light pedal input. The 0-100km/h official acceleration time of 8.2 seconds is adequate for everyday overtaking needs. Mid-to-high range acceleration is steady, and the engine still delivers good thrust when the accelerator is pressed hard at speeds above 80km/h. The transmission's shifting logic is clear, with excellent smoothness and almost no noticeable jerkiness at low speeds. The chassis tuning leans towards sportiness, with a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively filtering road bumps. When driving over speed bumps, the body vibration remains within a reasonable range. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides sufficient support with minimal body roll, maintaining BMW's consistent standard of handling performance. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, has moderate return strength, and provides the driver with great road feel feedback.
The fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with a comprehensive city road fuel consumption of approximately 8.5L per 100 kilometers and about 6.8L per 100 kilometers on highways, which is close to the official figure of 7.1L/100km. In terms of noise control, the interior is quiet at idle, while wind and tire noise slightly increase at 120km/h, but normal conversation is not affected. The seats provide good support, making long drives less tiring, and the rear seats are soft and highly comfortable for passengers. The braking system performs steadily, with reasonable braking distances and no obvious heat fade after continuous braking.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2022 BMW X3 sDrive20i M Sport lies in its cost-effectiveness—compared to the higher-priced xDrive30i M Sport (RM 358,800), the primary difference is the absence of the all-wheel-drive system, while other key features (such as 12 speakers, electric seats, and automatic parking) remain intact. With a price difference of over RM 40,000, it can meet most daily needs. Compared to its competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 200, it offers better performance in terms of power and handling. This car is suitable for two types of consumers: one is young family users who value the brand and driving quality, as it can satisfy daily commutes and weekend outings; the other is urban professionals with a limited budget who seek luxury features, with the M Sport package offering a sporty and personalized appearance. If your car purchase budget is around RM 300,000 and you need a well-rounded luxury SUV, the X3 sDrive20i M Sport is undoubtedly a priority choice to consider.
