In recent years, competition in Malaysia's C-segment sedan market has been heating up. Consumers are seeking a balance between powerful performance, practical space, and intelligent features. The 2022 Honda Civic 1.5 RS, as the top fuel-powered variant in its lineup, is centered around its key selling points, including a 182PS turbocharged engine, sporty exterior styling kit, and comprehensive safety features. Since its launch, it has attracted considerable attention from young families and driving enthusiasts. This review will focus on its static design details, dynamic driving performance, and suitability for daily use, providing potential buyers with a clear reference.

From the exterior, the 2022 Civic 1.5 RS exhibits a low-slung, sporty style. With a length of 4678mm and a wheelbase of 2735mm, it creates an extended coupe-like stance. The front features a large honeycomb grille, accented with blacked-out chrome trim for high recognition. The sharp-looking LED headlamp units on each side are connected to the upper grille trim, creating the visual impression of added width. The side profile has smooth lines, with a waistline running through the door handles from the front fenders to the rear. The 18-inch black multi-spoke wheels paired with 235/40 R18 tires enhance the sporty atmosphere. At the rear, the smoked black LED taillight group adopts a through-type design, with the Honda logo embedded in the middle. Below, the diffuser design echoes the dual exhaust outlets, further emphasizing the RS variant's performance-oriented positioning.

Inside, the interior features a predominantly black color scheme with silver accents for a clean and orderly layout. The center console adopts a floating design, with a 9-inch central touchscreen that supports Sound Plus functionality. The 8-speaker sound system delivers a quality auditory experience that meets expectations for this class of vehicle. The instrument cluster combines both analog and digital displays — the left side shows the tachometer and fuel gauge, while the right side is a fully digital screen that can toggle between fuel consumption, driving assistance status, and other information. In terms of materials, the door armrests and seats are wrapped in leather, offering a refined touch. The driver's seat supports 8-way electric adjustment, while the front passenger seat is adjusted manually. The front seats provide moderate support and are comfortable for long periods of use without causing fatigue.

In terms of space, the 2735mm wheelbase ensures ample legroom for rear-seat passengers. A 175cm tall passenger sitting in the rear still has about two fist widths of knee room from the back of the front seat, and headroom is approximately one fist, overall surpassing a portion of competitors in the same class. For storage capacity, the front central armrest box has a large volume for daily small items. The door storage compartments can hold two bottles of mineral water. The trunk has a capacity of 497L and features rear seats that can be folded down in a 60:40 split configuration, enabling expanded space for family trips or transporting large items. In terms of features, the rear is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB ports, enhancing the comfort of rear passengers. The front row also includes a 220V/230V power outlet, convenient for charging external devices.

For dynamic driving, the 2022 Civic 1.5 RS is equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power output of 182PS and peak torque at 1700rpm. It is paired with a CVT transmission. During takeoff, the power response is swift, requiring only a light touch on the accelerator to deliver a noticeable push-back feel. The mid-to-high-end acceleration is also quite linear, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.3 seconds. During actual driving, it delivers sufficient confidence for overtaking. The transmission shifts smoothly in normal mode, while switching to the sport mode keeps the engine revs higher, providing more immediate power output.

The handling and chassis performance are commendable, with the combination of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension balancing handling and comfort. The steering is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds, and stable at high speeds, providing ample confidence. When passing speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, keeping the vehicle body stable; cornering exhibits good body roll control, with strong tire grip. Overall, the performance leans towards sporty without sacrificing everyday comfort.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.3L/100km. In actual tests, urban traffic conditions yielded about 7.5L/100km, while highway driving achieved approximately 5.8L/100km. Overall, the fuel consumption meets the standard level for turbocharged models in this segment. Regarding braking performance, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes provide linear braking force. The brake pedal feel is moderate, and the vehicle remains stable during emergency braking, without noticeable nose-diving.

As for driving comfort, the in-cabin noise control performs well, with wind and tire noise at acceptable levels during high-speed driving, and engine noise becoming noticeable only at high RPMs. The seats offer good support and moderate cushioning, making long drives less tiring. The addition of electric parking and hill-start assist enhances daily convenience.

Overall, the key advantage of the 2022 Honda Civic 1.5 RS lies in its balanced performance: its sporty exterior design appeals to young consumers, spaciousness meets family needs, the 1.5T engine and sporty chassis tuning balance performance and comfort, and comprehensive safety features (6 airbags, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, etc.) ensure driving safety. Compared to competitors in the same class, its price (RM 151,900) is slightly higher than the base version. However, the RS-exclusive exterior package, 18-inch wheels, and other configurations make it more appealing both visually and in handling. Compared to the hybrid version (e:HEV 2.0L RS, RM 166,500), it has a price advantage, making it suitable for budget-conscious consumers who desire power and sportiness.

Regarding the target audience, the 2022 Civic 1.5 RS is suitable for family users looking for balanced performance. Its ample space and safety features meet daily household requirements, while the sporty exterior and performance tuning also attract young driving enthusiasts. If you need a car for daily commuting and also want to enjoy driving on weekends, the 2022 Honda Civic 1.5 RS is worth considering.

Pros
Rich and practical safety features, systems like lane departure warning and active braking effectively help avoid accidents in emergencies

Last Saturday, I took my wife and child to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just as we started up the mountain road, a sudden thunderstorm hit, making the road as slippery as if it had been coated in oil. I was carefully controlling the steering wheel when suddenly a local Kancil in front of me skidded on a curve, its body sharply veering towards my side — thankfully, the lane departure warning system on the Civic started beeping frantically. Instinctively, I hit the brakes, and the active safety system kicked in. The tires gripped the ground firmly (I later remembered they were front and rear ventilated disc brakes), bringing the car to a smooth stop just half a meter away from the Kancil. My wife was in the back seat holding our crying child, while I stared at the safety system notification on the dashboard and let out a sigh of relief: those six airbags and the ton of warning systems weren’t just for show — rating safety at 4 stars is truly well-deserved. But speaking of performance, the 1.5T turbo unleashes its torque at just 1,700 rpm. When overtaking on those mountain roads, pressing the accelerator, while the CVT doesn’t deliver the same punch as an AT, the power comes on smoothly. The 8.3-second 0-100 km/h acceleration is more than sufficient — it’s just that when the revs hit 3,000 rpm climbing hills, the engine noise becomes somewhat noticeable, which is a point deducted. On the other hand, about the exterior: when parked at the orchard entrance, a few local uncles gathered around and commented that the fastback profile looked much more "spirited" than the previous generation, and the LED headlights shone like eagle eyes through the rain and mist. Secretly, I was quite pleased: giving the exterior 5 stars is not an exaggeration. On the way home, the trunk held three durians, my kid’s scooter, and the picnic mat — the 497L of space was just right, and the rear AC vents calmed my sweaty child. The only regret was the lack of a panoramic sunroof; otherwise, watching Genting’s foggy scenery on a rainy day would have been even more enjoyable. But considering the price of a little over $140K, with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, what more could you ask for?

I've been driving the Civic 1.5V for nearly a year, and I truly feel I made the right choice! In the morning rush hour, overtaking is efficient without hesitation, thanks to the 1.5T turbo engaging quickly. The claim of 8 seconds to 100 km/h is no exaggeration. The rear row can comfortably seat three large men without feeling cramped, and the trunk easily fits a stroller along with luggage. The LED headlights are bright, and the automatic air conditioning is cool enough; the only downside is the noticeable tire noise at high speeds. Overall, it’s worth every penny!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. After the heavy rain, the uphill section was jammed like a parking lot. The torque of the HEV's motor comes quickly, so when following a car, lightly tapping the accelerator keeps it stable and prevents any sudden jolts. When cornering, the body remains stable, and the 235 wide tires provide enough grip. Suddenly, the car in front braked sharply, and the active braking system kicked in to stop my car, giving me a scare, but the safety features are indeed reliable. However, the tire noise on the highway is somewhat noticeable, probably due to the 18-inch tires. Fuel consumption is 4L/100km, which is really efficient. A full tank can easily last 800 kilometers.

Every time I wait at a red light and get glanced at by the car next to me, I secretly enjoy it—this streamlined car body was definitely worth choosing!
