Honda Civic 2023 Review

The C-segment sedan market has always been a core battleground for Malaysian consumers when choosing cars. Most family users want solid space performance, adequate power, and comprehensive safety features. The 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L E precisely addresses this demand. As the entry-level turbocharged model in the lineup, it not only continues the sporty genes of the Civic family but also raises intelligent safety features to a leading level in its price range. This time, we got a test drive car to see whether it can truly balance practicality and driving fun in daily commuting and weekend family outings.
From a distance, the lines of the 2023 Civic 1.5L E look more fluid compared to the previous generation. The coupe-like roof design paired with sleek body waistlines, devoid of excessive decorations, gives it a clean and crisp overall appearance. The front adopts Honda's latest family design, with a honeycomb lower grille complemented by sharp LED headlights, offering high recognizability. The rear LED taillights adopt a through-type design that is striking when lit, and the diffuser-style design on the lower part of the rear bumper enhances its sporty feel. It’s worth mentioning that it comes with 16-inch wheels, slightly smaller than the higher-spec RS version, but paired with 215/55R16 tires, it offers superior comfort and economy for everyday driving.
Sitting inside, the first thing noticeable is the well-organized interior layout. The center console tilts slightly toward the driver, making it more convenient to operate. The upper part of the center console is covered with soft-touch materials, offering a pleasant feel, while the lower part uses hard plastic. However, the craftsmanship is decent, without any obvious sense of cheapness. The 9-inch touchscreen in the center is adequately sized, with a clear and logical interface and relatively quick responses. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, making daily use very convenient. In terms of features, it comes standard with a HUD (Head-Up Display), allowing you to check speed and navigation information without looking down. The front row features 8-way electrically adjustable seats for quickly finding a comfortable driving position, while the passenger seat comes with 4-way manual adjustments, which are basically sufficient. The rear air conditioning vents and 220V power outlet cater to the needs of rear passengers.
Space performance has always been a traditional strength of the Civic. The 2735mm wheelbase is among the top rankings in its class. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, there are still two fist-widths of leg space left in the rear. A 175cm-tall passenger won't feel confined sitting in the back, although the coupe-like design slightly limits headroom, leaving about one fist-width of space. The trunk has a capacity of 497L, which is sufficient for storing several suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding arrangement, making it easier to load longer items occasionally. Interior storage spaces are also abundant, with door pockets both in the front and rear capable of holding large bottles of beverages, and the central armrest box as well as the glove box providing ample space for daily use.
Regarding the powertrain, the 1.5L turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power output of 134kW (182PS) and a peak torque of 240N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during start-up is very positive; a light press on the accelerator is enough to notice a pronounced sense of thrust. Particularly in the torque range of 1700-4500rpm, acceleration feels smooth and linear, offering sufficient power output for overtaking without pressing the accelerator deeply. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 8.3 seconds, which puts it at an above-average level among similar turbocharged models in its class. During daily driving, the transmission performs very smoothly, with almost no noticeable gear-shifting jolts. Only during rapid acceleration is there a slight delay as the engine revs climb, but this does not affect the overall experience.
In terms of handling, the steering of the Civic 1.5L E is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, providing a strong sense of confidence. The independent suspension with front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link setup leans towards comfort but retains a certain degree of support. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly filters out most of the vibrations without any noticeable bouncing. Around corners, the body roll is well-controlled, not feeling loose despite the comfort-oriented tuning. The braking performance is also very linear, with moderate force in the initial phase and noticeable stopping power in the latter phase, making it easy to control in everyday driving.
In terms of fuel consumption, we covered equal distances on city roads and highways with an average speed of about 35 km/h, and the final displayed fuel consumption was 6.2L/100km, which is very close to the official figure of 6L/100km. This level of fuel consumption is considered quite economical for a 1.5T C-segment sedan. Noise control is also well-handled; both wind and tire noise at high speeds are within an acceptable range. Engine noise is only more pronounced during rapid acceleration, but it doesn’t affect conversations inside the car.
Safety features are a major highlight of the Civic 1.5L E. It comes standard with the Honda Sensing safety system, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and forward collision warning. These features can significantly reduce driving stress during daily commutes. With the inclusion of six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system, its safety factor is elevated. Compared with other models in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8V, the Civic 1.5L E offers stronger performance, richer features, and a comparable price, making its value proposition stand out.
Overall, the 2023 Honda Civic 1.5L E is a very well-rounded model. It offers decent performance while balancing fuel efficiency and comfort. Its comprehensive safety features and practical interior space make it highly suitable for family use. If you’re looking for a car for daily commuting while occasionally taking the family out, and prioritize performance, features, and value for money, this is a great choice. It has no particularly obvious shortcomings and is the kind of car you won’t regret buying for family use.
