User Review

The compact SUV market has been a popular choice among Malaysian family users in recent years. This type of vehicle needs to balance the convenience of daily commuting, family travel space requirements, and durable quality. The 2013 Honda CR-V public is a model that aims at this particular segment. When it was first launched, it attracted much attention with its more stylish appearance and more practical space. Today, we will examine through a static experience and dynamic test drive to see if it truly meets the core needs of Malaysian consumers for compact SUVs.

At first glance, the 2013 CR-V public gives off a sense of a more youthful design compared to its predecessor. The front face abandons the previous rounded style and adopts sharper lines: the size of the headlight group is reduced, with sharper edges and a lens structure inside, making it highly recognizable when lit; a chrome trim extends from the logo to the inside of the headlights, visually widening the front; the lower grille is filled with black plastic panels, paired with the fog light areas on both sides, giving an overall layered feel. The changes to the side of the vehicle are equally significant. The waistline running from the front fender to the rear taillights makes the side look more elongated. The 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels have a more refined design than the old model, and the tire specification is 225/65 R17, balancing comfort and grip. The rear design is relatively simple, with L-shaped taillights connecting to the side waistline of the car body. A silver-colored skid plate is added to the lower part of the rear bumper, enhancing the robust SUV feel; the tailgate has a wide opening angle, making it convenient for loading large items.

Once you step inside, the interior layout of the 2013 CR-V public focuses on practicality, with the central console adopting a two-tone upper dark and lower light color scheme that aligns with the aesthetic preferences of family users. Regarding materials, the top part of the central console is covered with soft-touch plastic, which feels relatively fine, while the lower part is made of hard plastic, but the craftsmanship is quite solid, with no noticeable gaps. The central control screen is 7 inches in size, which is not particularly large but has a clear interface layout. It supports Bluetooth connectivity and a reverse camera function, with smooth operation. The physical buttons below have retained frequently used functions for the air conditioner and multimedia, making it convenient for blind operation while driving. The seats are wrapped in fabric material, offering decent support and comfort. The front seats can be manually adjusted for height and backrest angle, ensuring long periods of sitting won't cause fatigue.

Space performance has always been a traditional strength of the CR-V, and the 2013 public version's body dimensions are 4550mm×1820mm×1685mm, with a wheelbase of 2620mm, which is on the medium-to-upper range in its class. The front-row seating space is abundant, with a 175cm tall tester sitting in the driver’s seat having a headroom clearance of one fist and two fingers. The rear-row space is even more impressive, as the same tester noted a knee room clearance of two fists and a headroom clearance of one fist while seated in the back. Even with three passengers, the space doesn’t feel cramped. In terms of storage space, the storage slots on the door panels can accommodate two bottles of mineral water, while the center armrest box is deep enough to hold small items. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 589 liters, which can be expanded to 1146 liters by folding down the rear seats. Transporting suitcases or baby strollers is very easy. Additionally, the rear-row is equipped with air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, showing thoughtful attention to detail.

In terms of power, the 2013 CR-V public is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum power of 155 horsepower and a maximum torque of 190N·m, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. From the parameters, this power combination is not aggressive, but it is completely adequate for daily household use. The power output during startup is relatively smooth, with no obvious jerks. When you press the accelerator deeply, the engine speed will climb quickly. Although the acceleration process is not rapid, it gives enough confidence for overtaking. There are normal and ECON driving modes to choose from. In ECON mode, the throttle response becomes milder, making it suitable for use in congested urban sections, effectively reducing fuel consumption.

In terms of handling, the CR-V's steering wheel has moderate turning resistance, the steering is relatively precise, and there is no obvious slack, making it easy to handle. The suspension system adopts a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear double-wishbone independent suspension, with a tuning that leans towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most of the vibrations well, so sitting in the car does not feel overly bumpy; when cornering, body roll is well controlled and stability is decent. In terms of braking performance, the brake pedal offers a fairly linear feel, with moderate braking force in the initial stage and responsive braking in the later stage. The braking distance from 100 km/h is approximately 40 meters, meeting the average level of vehicles in the same class.

Fuel efficiency is a point of interest for family users. We tested it in congested urban sections and on highways: fuel consumption in urban sections is about 9.5L/100km, while on highways it drops to around 7.5L/100km, with a combined fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km. This performance is average among 2.0L vehicles in the same class, and the daily running cost is not too high. In terms of noise control, at high speeds, some wind and tire noise can be heard inside the vehicle, but it does not impede normal conversation. Overall, the noise control is acceptable.

All things considered, the core advantages of the 2013 Honda CR-V public are its practical space, smooth power, and reliable quality. Compared with other models in the same class, its rear seat space and trunk capacity are more competitive. Additionally, Honda's brand reputation is quite strong in the Malaysian market, ensuring durability. However, its interior materials and configurations are relatively simple, lacking in technological sophistication, making it more suitable for consumers who value practicality and reliability.

If you are a family user who often travels with family members and occasionally needs to carry large items, then the 2013 CR-V public would be a good choice. Its space is ample, the power output is smooth, and fuel efficiency is within an acceptable range, fully meeting the demands of daily household use. Overall, although this car does not feature many flashy configurations, it stands out for its balance and practicality, making it a compact SUV worth considering.

Pros
Powerful performance, strong uphill and overtaking, full of stamina, enjoyable driving experience
Spacious interior, the back row can seat three adults without cramping, practical for family use
Stable body, VSA system works great, no skidding during sharp turns in heavy rain, steady on highways
Cons
Traffic jams with air conditioning on level 3 make the power feel weak
Interior feels plasticky, materials like the armrest box are hard and prone to abnormal noises
Thin paint, easily chipped by small stones

This CR-V has amazing power! It's not sluggish at all when climbing slopes or overtaking, driving it feels great!

Previously, driving the old Proton Saga always got me teased by friends as "like driving a truck." Switching to the 2013 CR-V Public was really for its interior that feels "family-friendly"—the soft-touch dashboard feels good to the touch, and with three adults in the back, squeezing through Penang's weekend morning market doesn't feel cramped. It's worth a full 5 stars with no complaints! As for safety, I got cut off by a dump truck on the highway, but the car stayed stable without swaying, and the side airbags didn't deploy unnecessarily. However, since it lacks modern features like automatic emergency braking, I think 4 stars is fair. The downside is during Kuala Lumpur's after-work traffic jams, turning the air conditioning to level three can make it feel a bit sluggish. But on the weekends when taking the family up to Genting, its climbing power is even better than my friend's CX-5. My only small regret: the rear seats lack USB ports, so charging the kids' tablet requires a long cable, which isn't as thoughtful as the new models. Still, after 8 years with no major repairs, on Malaysian roads, it’s worth it!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. Just as we got on the mountain road, a heavy rainstorm hit. The wipers were sweeping like crazy, but the visibility was still blurry. Fortunately, the CR-V's VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) system was reliable. There was no slipping during cornering, and the safety aspect had no complaints. However, the interior was a bit disappointing. The plastic panels on the center console felt hard, and when the child kicked the armrest box in the rear seat, it clanged loudly like hitting sheet metal. The exterior, on the other hand, looked nice. The silver-gray body looked quite sharp in the rain and mist. It's just that the paint is thin—last week, a small chip was caused by a roadside pebble, and I felt heartbroken for half a day.

After being on the road for almost ten years, it's still reliable for city commuting, maneuvering through narrow alleys, and competing for parking spaces. Three big guys can fit in the back without feeling cramped. The safety features are sufficient for daily use, though the interior has a bit of a plasticky feel. However, it's durable and worry-free, stable on highways even in heavy rain - truly dependable for family use.

Having driven the 2013 CR-V for almost ten years, the interior is well-maintained and looks brand new. The leather seats are not hot in summer. Although the exterior is not as trendy as the new models, it's pleasing to the eye. Maneuvering in traffic is stable, and even with three big guys in the back seat, it's not cramped. It's versatile for grocery shopping and commuting. The only minor regret is that the paintwork is a bit thin.
