Hyundai Elantra 2004 Review

In Malaysia's compact family car market, durability and practicality have always been the core considerations for consumers when choosing a car. Many people want a reliable ride that can handle daily commuting and family outings without compromising on features or space—this is where the 2004 Hyundai Elantra public comes in. As a family sedan that emphasizes balanced performance, can it find the optimal balance between space, power, and cost-effectiveness? This time, through a static experience and dynamic test drive, we comprehensively evaluate its actual performance.
From the exterior, the 2004 Elantra public adopts a stable family-oriented design approach without overly aggressive styling. The front features the then-modern family-style vertical grille, paired with neatly designed headlights, offering a decent level of recognition. The side profile exhibits smooth lines with a character line extending from the front fender to the rear, adding a sense of layering to the sides. The 15-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (on certain trims) are fairly standard in this class. The rear design is simple, with horizontally arranged taillights that blend seamlessly with the trunk lid lines, and a chrome trim strip below the rear bumper that slightly enhances the sense of refinement. Regarding the lighting system, the top trim models are equipped with halogen front fog lights, which provide adequate illumination for night driving.
Inside the car, the overall interior layout prioritizes practicality, with a predominantly dark gray color scheme highlighted by silver trim accents. The center console adopts a symmetrical design with clear button layouts. The operation logic of the air conditioning knobs and audio control area is simple, allowing even novice drivers to quickly get familiar. The seats are wrapped in fabric material, with soft padding that provides decent lumbar support, making long drives comfortable without noticeable fatigue. For core features, the car comes standard with a single-disc CD audio system, manual air conditioning, and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors. Higher trims add features such as reverse sensors. While it does not offer modern smart tech features, it is sufficient for daily family use.
Space performance is key for family cars, and the 2004 Elantra public boasts dimensions of 4525mm×1725mm×1425mm, with a wheelbase of 2610mm, placing it among the top tiers in its class. The front row offers ample space; a 175cm-tall occupant, after adjusting the seat, still has a fist's worth of headroom left. The rear space performs even better, providing up to two fists of legroom, and can comfortably accommodate three adults without feeling overly cramped. In terms of storage capacity, the door pockets can fit two 500ml water bottles, the center armrest box has a moderate depth, and the trunk has a capacity of 415L, capable of holding two 28-inch suitcases along with some miscellaneous items, fully meeting the needs of a family for short trips.
In terms of power, the 2004 Elantra public is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 82kW (112PS) and a peak torque of 143N·m, paired with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power output at start-up is relatively smooth, suitable for daily city commutes; when the engine revs climb above 3000rpm, the power sees a noticeable burst. For overtaking, you just need to step on the accelerator deeply, and although the gearbox's response is not very fast, it is adequate for basic driving needs. The test drive version we experienced was the 4-speed automatic, which offers smooth gear shifts without significant jolts.
In terms of control and chassis performance, the steering wheel of this car feels relatively light, with average precision, making it suitable for female drivers or daily commuting. The suspension system uses a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. It can filter out most small vibrations when going over speed bumps or uneven roads. However, when encountering larger potholes, there will be slight body sway. When driving on curves, the body roll is kept within an acceptable range, not causing unease for the driver.
As for fuel consumption, we drove 50km each in urban traffic and highway conditions, averaging about 7.2L/100km for the manual model and 8.0L/100km for the automatic model. This level of fuel consumption was considered economical and practical among compact cars in 2004, and it won’t bring excessive fuel cost pressure to the owner. The braking performance is stable, the brake pedal feels moderate, and during emergency braking, the vehicle maintains good posture control without obvious forward pitching.
In terms of driving comfort, noise control in the cabin is at a medium level for its class. When the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise and tire noise become more apparent but do not affect normal conversation. The fabric material of the seats offers good breathability, making it comfortable even in summer without feeling stuffy. It is worth mentioning that the air conditioning system cools down quickly, and even in Malaysia’s hot weather, it can rapidly lower the interior temperature.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2004 Hyundai Elantra public are its spacious interior, balanced power performance, and economical fuel consumption. Although it does not have too many standout configurations, as a family car, its practicality fully meets the needs. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla, it has a longer wheelbase and more spacious rear seating; compared to the Honda Civic, it boasts lower fuel consumption and more affordable maintenance costs.
This car is suitable for families who value space practicality and fuel economy, especially for those who frequently travel with family members. If you are looking for reliable daily commuting and cost-effectiveness rather than advanced technological features or sporty performance, the 2004 Elantra public would be a good choice.
In summary, the 2004 Hyundai Elantra public is a typical compact family car. While it does not have overly outstanding features, it achieves a balance in key household needs such as space, power, and fuel consumption. For budget-conscious consumers who prioritize practicality, it is a worthy consideration.
