Specs

In the D-segment sedan market in Malaysia, consumer demand for space, features, and reliability has always been core. The 2017 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Executive, as one of the representative models in this segment, has maintained high attention with its richer comfort features and class-leading warranty policy. This time, we focus on testing its static details and dynamic performance to see if it can meet family users' expectations for "balanced practicality."

From the exterior, the design of the Sonata 2.0 Executive leans towards a stable yet detailed style. The front adopts a large trapezoidal grille, adorned with chrome trims, creating an overall harmonious visual effect; the side body lines are smooth, and the waistline extending from the hood to the rear enhances the sense of length. The 18-inch multi-spoke wheels are more atmospheric than the 17-inch wheels of the Elegance version, with tire specifications of 235/45 R18, and the grip performance is worth looking forward to. At the rear, the LED taillight assembly adopts a prototype of a through-type design (although not fully connected, it visually forms a sense of unity). Chrome trim on the lower part of the rear bumper enhances the sense of refinement, and overall recognition is at an upper-middle level in the same class. The lighting system is equipped with halogen main lights and LED daytime running lights, and the automatic headlight function is convenient for daily use.

Sitting inside, the interior style is predominantly dark, supplemented by silver trims, creating an overall calm home atmosphere. The layout of the dashboard is clear, and the positions of the physical buttons and knobs are reasonable, eliminating the need to look down while operating. In terms of features, the advantages of the Executive version are evident: the driver's seat comes with 12-way electric adjustment, and the passenger seat offers 8-way electric adjustment (manual on the Elegance version), allowing for more precise posture adjustments. The dual-zone automatic climate control supports independent front and rear adjustment, and there is a 220V/230V power outlet below the rear air conditioning vent, convenient for passengers to connect external devices. The instrument panel is of the Electroluminescent Analogue type, displaying information clearly but lacking the technological feel of a full LCD panel. Keyless entry and start functionality come as standard, providing more convenience for daily use. Front and rear head airbags add up to 6 in total, making the safety configuration comprehensive.

Space performance is a strong point of the Sonata, with a vehicle length of 4855mm and a wheelbase of 2805mm, resulting in a spacious rear seating area. A passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the rear still has more than two fists of legroom, and the headroom is also ample, without causing a sense of constraint. The trunk capacity is 510 liters, its interior is well-shaped, and the rear seats support a 60:40 folding split, which can expand the storage space for transporting larger items without a problem. In terms of storage capabilities, the door panel storage slots and the center armrest box have considerable capacity, while the front cup holders are equipped with fixing devices, showing attention to detail.

For dynamic driving, the Sonata 2.0 Executive is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum of 154PS and reaching peak torque at 4000rpm, paired with an AT gearbox. The power output is smooth when starting up, without the sudden surges characteristic of turbocharged engines, making it suitable for daily urban driving. During low-to-medium speed acceleration, the gearbox shifts gears smoothly, though there is a slight delay in downshifting when the accelerator is pressed deeply. When overtaking at high speeds, it requires preemptive throttle input. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 11 seconds, which in real-world driving means this power level is sufficient for daily commuting and occasional highway trips, but users seeking intense driving experiences might find it less exciting.

The chassis uses a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, calibrated for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, most of the vibrations are effectively filtered out, providing a good experience for rear passengers. When cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range. The steering wheel has moderate turning resistance, with average precision, fitting the typical tuning for a family car. In terms of braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes deliver linear braking power. The braking distance is normal among vehicles in the same class, and the braking performance provides sufficient confidence for daily driving.

The fuel consumption performance is average. The official combined fuel consumption is 7.9L/100km. In actual urban driving, the fuel consumption is around 9-10L/100km, while on highways, it can drop to approximately 7L. The 70L fuel tank capacity provides a decent range. In terms of noise control, engine noise is not noticeable at low speeds. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise increase slightly but remain within an acceptable range, not affecting in-car conversations.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Executive are: spacious interior, a wealth of comfort-oriented features (especially the electric seats and rear power outlet), a rare 5-year/300,000-kilometer long warranty in its class, and the more stylish 18-inch wheels compared to the Elegance version. Compared to competitors like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord in the same class, the Sonata offers more comprehensive features and better value for money, but its brand premium is slightly inferior.

This car is suitable for family users who value practicality, a rich set of features, and long-term reliability, especially for consumers who frequently travel with a full family load. The smooth powertrain and comfortable chassis meet the demands for daily commuting and long-distance trips, while the long warranty reduces future usage costs. If you are looking for a balanced and practical option rather than extreme performance or brand aura, the Sonata 2.0 Executive is a good choice.

After driving the Sonata 2.0 Executive for a few years, I always feel the steering wheel is just the right weight during traffic jams and crawling, easy to handle with one hand without feeling tired. Three elders in the back seat on long trips can still have enough legroom to move their knees around; the hatchback trunk can fit a baby stroller and camping gear, and you don't even need much effort to close the lid. The only thing is that after being exposed to the sun in the summer, it would be perfect if the seats came with ventilation!

As the owner of a 2017 Sonata 2.0 Elegance, I've been driving it in Malaysia for three years now, and overall, I'm very satisfied. Previously, I drove an older model Vios. When I was upgrading, I compared it with the Camry 2.0G. The Sonata had more features and was 20,000 MYR cheaper, so I chose it without hesitation. During the morning rush hours around KLCC, the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine + 6AT is very smooth. In D gear, it follows traffic without jerking. However, for quick acceleration or overtaking, you need to press the accelerator deeper and wait about one second for the power to kick in. After 120 km/h on the highway, acceleration feels slightly sluggish. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the hill assist function is very practical, preventing rollback during uphill starts. The rear space is spacious, and when mounting a child safety seat with ISOFIX connectors, it becomes stable in just one click. The panoramic sunroof also keeps the rear seats from feeling cramped. A minor complaint is that the halogen headlights aren't bright enough when driving on rural roads at night, so I had to replace them with LED bulbs myself. In terms of safety, it comes with 6 airbags + ESP. Once, when skidding during a rainy-day turn, the stability control system intervened in time, preventing an accident. The fuel consumption is about 10L in the city and 7L on the highway. With a 70L fuel tank, a full tank can cover 700 kilometers, so long trips don’t require frequent refueling.

Previously drove a Japanese sedan with cramped space; switching to the Sonata 2.0 Elegance was absolutely the right choice! With a 2805mm wheelbase, during KL’s morning traffic jams, family members in the back seat can comfortably cross their legs without feeling cramped. Safety gets a 5-star rating—6 airbags + ESP. The last time I avoided a pothole on the LDP highway, the car remained very stable. The interior soft padding + dual-zone air conditioning are great. When I took friends to Genting over the weekend, the independent rear air vents earned praises from my heat-sensitive Malaysian friends. However, the 11-second 0-100 km/h acceleration means I have to accelerate in advance when overtaking trucks on the North-South Expressway, which is a minor drawback. The 5-year, 300,000 km warranty gives peace of mind considering Malaysia’s road conditions. Spending over 140,000 MYR for a D-segment car is totally worth it!

After driving the Sonata 2.0 Elegance for five years, I genuinely feel it's worth it! The steering wheel feels as light as playing a game when stuck in city traffic, and it's not sluggish when overtaking on the highway. Three big guys can sit in the back row and still cross their legs. The best part is the dual-zone air conditioning—I’m freezing like a popsicle while my wife in the passenger seat complains it's hot, so we can adjust the temperature individually without disturbing each other. The fuel consumption is 7.9L, which is acceptable for daily highway driving, but when stuck in city traffic, you really have to press the accelerator harder.

Driving the Sonata 2.0 for five years, commuting in traffic jams every day doesn’t feel tiring—12-way power-adjustable seats fit the back perfectly, and seating three friends in the rear to grab nasi lemak doesn’t feel cramped. The acceleration is slightly slow, but giving it some gas for highway overtakes is still stable. The five-year, 300,000 km warranty is such a relief!
