Jaguar F-Type 2020 Review

In the past two years, the luxury sports car market in Malaysia has been heating up, and consumers are no longer just focusing on large-displacement V8 engines. Instead, they are paying more attention to the balance between performance and everyday practicality. As the most iconic two-door sports car under Jaguar, the 2020 F-TYPE Coupe enters the niche market with a 2.0T + rear-wheel-drive combination, focusing on positioning itself as a "daily drivable sports car." In this test drive, we specifically evaluated its power response, handling limits, and space practicality to see if this RM 579,037 sports car could truly balance passion and everyday use.
In terms of exterior design, the 2020 F-TYPE Coupe continues Jaguar's classic sports car silhouette, with smooth overall lines full of muscular appeal. The front features a large honeycomb grille, paired with Jaguar's signature badge, offering high recognition; the sharp styling of the LED headlights on both sides, along with their simple internal light design, provides an outstanding visual effect when illuminated. The waistline runs from the front to the rear of the car, complemented by the 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels (optional on the test model), further enhancing the athletic stance. At the rear, a short spoiler aligns with the dual exhaust layout, while the horizontally designed taillights echo the headlights, blending the elegance of classic sports cars with modern sporty elements.
Sitting inside, the F-TYPE Coupe's interior design leans toward a driver-centric orientation with the center console tilted 12 degrees toward the driver's seat for easier operation. The materials in the interior mainly consist of genuine leather and Alcantara, with soft-touch surfaces wherever your hand lands, fitting the luxury sports car positioning. The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system serves as the interior's core, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with smooth operation. The multi-functional steering wheel is equipped with paddle shifters, offering a solid grip and well-laid-out buttons. In terms of features, the standard 12-speaker audio system provides clear sound quality, the single-zone automatic climate control is easy to adjust, and power-folding mirrors and rain-sensing wipers enhance daily convenience. However, front-row storage space is somewhat limited, with only the central armrest box and door pockets available for small items, which is a common trade-off in sports car designs.
In terms of space, as a two-door, two-seater sports car, the F-TYPE Coupe has a wheelbase of 2622mm, providing ample front-row seating space. For a 180cm tall occupant, there's more than a fist's worth of headroom and legroom. The seats offer robust support and firm side bolsters, preventing fatigue even during extended drives. The trunk has a capacity of 408L, which is significantly larger than the 150L of the Porsche 718 in the same segment and can accommodate two 20-inch suitcases, making it completely adequate for short trips or weekend getaways. The fuel tank has a capacity of 63L, and with an official fuel consumption of 10.7L/100km, the range is approximately 600km, reducing the need for frequent refueling.
In terms of power, the 2020 F-TYPE Coupe is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 300 PS and a peak torque of 400 N·m (matching the data sheet specifications), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the throttle response is sensitive upon start, with maximum torque available at just 1500rpm, allowing for noticeable acceleration with a light press of the pedal. Switching to sport mode makes the transmission's shift logic more aggressive, with quicker downshifts, and the power comes on demand when the accelerator is pressed deeply for overtaking. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.7 seconds is outstanding among sports cars with the same engine displacement. The rear-wheel-drive layout gives the car better handling in corners, with precise steering and minimal play, providing clear road feedback.
The handling and chassis performance are highlights of the F-TYPE Coupe. The suspension system adopts a front double wishbone and a rear multi-link independent suspension, with a tuning bias towards sportiness while maintaining a certain level of comfort. During daily driving on asphalt roads, it can filter out most minor bumps; when encountering speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension rebounds quickly without unnecessary shaking. During high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the tire grip is strong, making it easy for even beginners to handle. The braking system performs steadily, with a moderate pedal travel and linear braking force. In emergency braking situations, the car maintains a stable posture.
In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 100km each on urban congested roads and highways, achieving an average fuel consumption of about 11.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figures. Considering the power output of sports cars, this result is within the normal range. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise during high-speed driving remain within an acceptable range. The engine noise becomes more pronounced in Sport mode, enhancing the driving atmosphere, but it remains relatively quiet during normal cruising.
In summary, the core advantage of the 2020 F-TYPE Coupe lies in its "balance": the 2.0T engine provides enough aggression, the handling is excellent, and the 408L trunk space combined with decent fuel efficiency makes it suitable for daily use. Compared to similar models, its price is slightly lower than the Porsche 718 Cayman (approximately RM 600,000 starting price), offering richer configurations and more space; it surpasses the BMW Z4 (approximately RM 550,000 starting price) in handling limits and exudes a stronger sense of luxury. This car is suitable for two groups of people: young individuals pursuing driving passion while needing a daily commuter car, and families who appreciate a sports car look but value practicality (as a second car).
Overall, the 2020 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe is not a purely track-focused sports car but a "sports car you can drive to work." It combines sports car performance and aesthetics with everyday usability, making it a rare balanced choice in the luxury sports car market. If you're looking for a car that satisfies your driving desires without compromising on practicality, the F-TYPE Coupe is worth considering.
