In the past two years, Malaysia's luxury GT sports car market has gradually rebounded. Consumers are no longer focusing solely on German brands, and models that combine Italian elegance and performance have begun to attract more attention. As an early version of the brand's classic GT model, the 2008 Maserati GranTurismo public, with its combination of everyday practicality and brand character positioning, continues to garner significant interest among potential buyers in the used car market. This review will focus on the car's static design, dynamic performance, and practical driving experience to help readers determine if it meets their needs.

From the exterior, the 2008 GranTurismo public retains Maserati's classic GT design, with overall lines that are sleek and powerful. The front features the brand's signature vertical slatted grille, paired with oval-shaped headlights on either side, creating excellent recognizability. The side profile of the car features lines that extend from the front fender to the rear, forming an elegant fastback design, while the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels further enhance its sporty vibe. At the rear, the quad-exhaust layout complements the minimalist tail light design, ensuring the overall appearance aligns with the elegance of a GT car while maintaining the identity of a performance vehicle.

Sitting inside, the interior primarily features black leather, complemented by wood grain trim, creating a sense of luxury. The center console layout is simple, with a 7-inch LCD screen on the top offering basic multimedia functions, and neatly arranged physical buttons below for convenient operation. The seats are wrapped in leather, with the front seats supporting electric adjustment and lumbar support, providing moderate cushioning suitable for long-distance driving. However, due to the technical limitations of 2008, the interior's tech features are relatively basic, lacking the popular smart connectivity features of today.

In terms of space, the car measures 4881mm×1847mm×1353mm, with a wheelbase of 2942mm. The front seating area offers ample space, with approximately two fist gaps of headroom for a 180cm passenger, and adjustable legroom. The rear space, however, is less impressive, providing only about one fist of headroom and one fist and two fingers of legroom for a similarly tall passenger, making it more suitable for short trips. Regarding storage, the trunk has a capacity of 310L, capable of accommodating two 20-inch suitcases, meeting daily commuting or short trip needs. Small item storage is also addressed with thoughtful design elements like front door storage slots, a central armrest compartment, and cup holders.

For performance, the 2008 GranTurismo public is equipped with a 4.2L V8 naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum output of 399 horsepower and a peak torque of 460N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Driving modes include Normal, Sport, and Snow. In Normal mode, power delivery is smooth, providing sufficient lightness during starts and low-speed runs; when switched to Sport mode, throttle responsiveness becomes sharper, gear-shifting logic is delayed, and mid-to-high-range acceleration is strong, offering confidence while overtaking. However, limited by weight and displacement, there is a slight sense of turbo lag at low-speed starts (Note: This may actually refer to the characteristic of the naturally aspirated engine, suggesting linear power delivery but generally weaker low-end torque).

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal play and clear directional response. The suspension system adopts front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned towards sportiness. It manages body roll well during cornering and delivers excellent stability. Over speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, the suspension can filter out most minor vibrations, though rear passengers will feel noticeable bumps, making overall comfort moderate. The braking system performs reliably, with a 100km/h to 0 stopping distance of approximately 38 meters, meeting the standards of vehicles in the same class.

In terms of fuel consumption, the average fuel consumption is about 14.5L per 100 kilometers under mixed road conditions, up to 18L under congested urban conditions, and about 11L on highways. The fuel economy performance is moderate. Regarding noise control, the engine noise is relatively low at idle, but wind noise and tire noise become more noticeable at high speeds, which slightly affects comfort. The seat padding has moderate softness, good wrapping, and does not easily cause fatigue during long drives.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2008 Maserati GranTurismo public lie in its classic Italian design, the performance of the V8 engine, and its brand appeal. Compared to similar second-hand models like the BMW 6 Series and Mercedes-Benz CLS, it offers better brand recognition and performance, though it lags in technology features and fuel economy. This car is more suited for consumers who value brand appeal, seek the sound of a V8 engine, and require daily practicality, especially classic GT car enthusiasts and second-hand luxury car buyers. If you do not have high demands for technology features and are looking for a balance between elegance and performance, the 2008 GranTurismo public is worth considering.

Pros
V8 engine delivers strong power, quick acceleration, and an attractive exhaust sound, with a high rate of turning heads
Stable chassis performance ensures smooth cornering, with excellent support during high-speed driving and cornering
Classic Italian retro style appearance exudes elegance, offering more luxury compared to competitors, with strong visual appeal
Cons
The leather seats become seriously hot after being parked outdoors in summer, affecting the seating experience.
The air conditioning cools down slowly, taking a long time to lower the temperature after being exposed to the sun.
The co-driver's storage box has limited space and cannot accommodate items like a folding umbrella or wallet.<br: Gear shifting feels jerky during low-speed following, making driving in traffic less comfortable.

Driving this 08 Maserati GT for commuting is like injecting a shot of adrenaline into the morning rush—overtaking is effortless, and the roar of the engine overpowers the horns of nearby motorbikes. The only downside is that in summer, the leather seats can get so hot they make you jump, but considering its full-on head-turning rate, it's worth it!

This interior feels like a work of art, but when you enter a sunbaked car, the leather seats are so hot they can make you jump!

Previously I drove a BMW 3 Series, and switching to this '08 Maserati GranTurismo was purely because I was struck by its Italian elegance—it has a touch of retro luxury compared to rival Porsche 911. When parked under the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, its head-turning rate exceeds even that of the latest supercars. Giving it full marks for safety is no exaggeration; taking a corner at 140 km/h on the highway feels as steady as if it's glued to the road, much more solid than my friend's old Z4. The leather interior feels great to the touch, but the glovebox on the passenger side is so small that it can't even fit a folding umbrella, which is a bit annoying. Stuck in the Jalan Bukit Bintang morning rush, I didn't dare to step on the V8 roar and could only crawl slowly; on weekends, going up Genting Highlands, the blip of the downshifts paired with the cornering support is so exhilarating that I forgot all the exhaustion of climbing the hill. The only downside is the air conditioning—it takes half an hour to cool down under the intense Malaysian heat, which is definitely a complaint!

This V8 engine sound is incredible! Super stable when cornering, just the rear space is a bit cramped.

Previously, I drove a Japanese family car, but I switched to this Maserati GT purely for its exhaust sound and style — with a 3.8L V8, stepping on the gas pedal turns every head on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur! During the morning rush hour, when stuck in traffic near the Petronas Twin Towers, gear shifts can be a bit jerky at low speeds, but holding the Italian leather steering wheel and listening to the low roar of the exhaust makes the irritation fade by half. On weekends, driving on the winding Genting Highlands road, the chassis is so stable it feels glued to the ground, making cornering smoother than my friend’s 911. However, the air conditioning takes a bit of time to cool down — under the Malaysian sun, you’ll need to roll down the windows for a couple of minutes first. The wooden trim and stitching details of the interior are impeccable, but the glove box on the passenger side is so small it can’t even fit a wallet — though honestly, who buys a Maserati to store stuff? The safety features are much more advanced than my old Japanese car, which gives peace of mind on long drives.
