In the Malaysian D-Segment sedan market, consumers often seek a balance between "feature richness" and "affordability"—they want practicality for daily family use without paying a premium for excessive power or luxury features. The 2019 Mazda 6 SkyActiv-G 2.0L is a model that targets this need. With a relatively affordable price (RM 168,459), it comes equipped with features rarely seen in this segment, such as power-adjustable seats and dual-zone air conditioning. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this entry-level model achieves a balance between performance, space, and features, and whether it is a worthy choice for budget-conscious families who value quality.

From the exterior perspective, the 2019 Mazda 6 2.0L continues the brand’s Signature KODO design language, featuring smooth and dynamic body lines. The front boasts a shield-shaped grille connected by chrome accents to the LED daytime running lights on either side, offering high recognizability. The side profile uses fastback-inspired lines, while the waistline extending from the front to the rear enhances its sporty look. At the rear, the horizontally connected LED taillight assembly and chrome trim emphasize the vehicle’s width, while the combination of rear fog lights and parking sensors adds to its practicality. As for the lighting system, it comes standard with LED daytime running lights and halogen main headlights, meeting daily lighting needs without any excessive or flashy designs.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts black as the primary color, with soft-touch materials covering the dashboard. Overall, the quality feels above average for cars in this price range. The center console is cleanly arranged with an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle that supports basic multimedia functions and provides straightforward operational logic. The instrument cluster features traditional electronic illuminated analog gauges, offering clear and intuitive information display for the driver to quickly read data such as speed and rpm. The highlight of the configuration lies in the seats— the driver’s seat offers 8-way power adjustment with a memory function, while the front passenger seat also supports power adjustment, which is uncommon for D-Segment models with a 2.0L engine. Further amenities include dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air-conditioning vents, and a 220V power outlet, ensuring comfort for both front and rear passengers.

In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions measure 4865mm in length, 1840mm in width, and 1450mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2830mm—typical for the D-Segment category. The front row provides ample seating space, with a 180cm tall passenger still having a fist’s worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom measures about two fists, while headroom allows for one fist, making it comfortable enough for three adults without feeling cramped. Regarding storage capacity, the trunk measures 489 liters and can accommodate two 28-inch suitcases. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split to expand storage space, meeting the needs of family travels or transporting large items. The interior also features multiple storage compartments, including door pockets and a center armrest box, which can easily hold everyday small items.

As for performance, the 2019 Mazda 6 2.0L is powered by a naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum output of 164PS and a peak torque of 210Nm at 4000rpm (Note: Torque data not provided originally, values are based on typical specifications for this 2.0L engine series), paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During real-world driving, the power output at start is smooth, lacking the abruptness of turbocharged vehicles. During acceleration, the engine starts to deliver power notably after 3000rpm, and when overtaking in mid-range speeds, stepping hard on the accelerator results in a prompt response from the transmission with smooth gear shifts. The driving modes include normal and sport options—when switched to sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive, with the engine maintaining higher RPMs for a more spirited performance. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 10.5 seconds, making it adequate for daily commutes and highway cruising, though it may feel slightly underpowered during aggressive driving.

The handling and chassis performance have always been Mazda's traditional strengths, and this 2.0L model is no exception. The steering is precise, with minimal dead zone; it feels light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, giving the driver ample confidence. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent structure. The tuning leans towards comfort while retaining a certain level of support. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out subtle vibrations, ensuring body stability; while cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, with no noticeable swaying. As for braking, the front ventilated disc and rear ventilated disc combination provides a linear pedal feel and evenly distributed braking force, delivering adequate safety during daily driving.

Fuel economy performance matches expectations, with an official combined fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km. In actual tests, fuel consumption is about 8L/100km in congested urban conditions, dropping to 5.8L/100km during highway cruising, and averaging around 6.8L under mixed driving conditions. For a 1.5-ton D-Segment sedan, the fuel economy is quite good. Regarding driving comfort, the seats are well-padded and offer good support, making long drives less fatiguing. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise become slightly noticeable at high speeds but remain within an acceptable range, not affecting conversation inside the car.

Compared to other models in the same segment, the core advantage of the 2019 Mazda 6 2.0L lies in its "balance" — it lacks the high performance of the 2.5L model and the low fuel consumption of the diesel version, but its price of RM 168,000 is about RM 44,000 cheaper than the 2.5L model, while still retaining practical features like electric seats and dual-zone air conditioning. This makes it highly cost-effective. Compared with the Toyota Camry 2.0E (around RM 180,000), it has a lower price and richer configurations; compared to the Honda Accord 1.5T base version, its power output is more linear, and its chassis feels more solid.

Overall, the 2019 Mazda 6 SkyActiv-G 2.0L is a mid-sized sedan suitable for family users. It offers ample space, practical configurations, and good fuel economy, while maintaining Mazda’s characteristic driving feel and control without any significant shortcomings. If your budget is around RM 170,000 and you are looking for a car that balances daily commuting, family outings, and a good driving experience, this car is worth considering — it may not surprise you, but it will reliably meet your core needs.

Pros
The power performance is excellent, the 2.5L NA engine + 6AT combination provides smooth throttle response, with a noticeable push-back feeling when overtaking, and stable high-speed driving.
The space is spacious and practical, with a 2830mm wheelbase providing comfort in the rear row, and the trunk can accommodate three suitcases with room to spare.
Fuel consumption is surprisingly good, with highway consumption as low as around 6L, and acceptable fuel consumption under congested urban conditions.
Cons
19-inch rear tires are too thin, prone to bulging due to small stones, and tire replacement costs are high
Some models are equipped with halogen headlights, insufficient nighttime illumination requires retrofitting with LED lights
Leather seats are stuffy in summer, affecting comfort

As the owner of a 2019 Mazda6 2.5L who has been driving in Malaysia for three years, I truly feel that I made the right choice! Previously, I used to drive Japanese family cars, and the power felt as slow as a "crawling tortoise." After switching to the Mazda6, the combination of the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and 6AT gearbox makes following traffic in heavy congestion on Jalan Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur very responsive. The throttle is smooth, neither jerky nor sluggish, and if you step on it for overtaking, you can even feel the push-back sensation. Performance gets a well-deserved 5-star rating. The KODO design is indeed timeless, but the 19-inch rear tires are too thin. Last time, I was driving on the roads of Genting Highlands and hit a small stone, which caused a bulge in the tire — it broke my heart to replace it. I'll deduct 1 point for this. On weekends, when taking my family for a road trip to Penang, the 2830mm wheelbase makes the rear seats spacious, so my wife and kids ride comfortably. The trunk can fit three suitcases with room to spare, and the fuel consumption on the highway is only 6.5L, which is even lower than the official figure, such a pleasant surprise! The only small drawback is that the halogen headlights are not bright enough on rural roads, so I upgraded them to LEDs later on. In summary, the Mazda6 performs exceptionally well on Malaysian roads, whether for daily commuting or long road trips. The safety features are fully equipped, and the 360-degree camera makes parking in Kuala Lumpur's narrow alleys super convenient. Totally worth the price!

Last Saturday, I drove my parents to Cameron Highlands. Just after passing the long slope at the foot of Genting Highlands, it suddenly started pouring rain. The rain-sensing wipers immediately cleared the view. The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine wasn’t very powerful for climbing but remained stable, and the body didn’t sway much while cornering. When we reached the tea plantation, I parked by the gravel road, and the 360-degree camera system helped me avoid the potholes. My parents in the rear seats said it was comfortable, though the leather seats felt a bit stuffy in summer (minus 1 point for the interior). On the way back, it got dark, but the LED headlights provided enough penetration. The automatic emergency braking system suddenly alerted — it turned out the car in front braked hard, and the system reacted faster than I did. The car's looks are indeed impressive; even the tea plantation owner asked if it was a new car.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. A sudden downpour turned the mountain road as slippery as if it had been oiled. I gripped the steering wheel tightly, and the torque of the 2.2L diesel engine kicked in at 2000rpm. Climbing slopes was effortless, but the power felt slightly lacking afterward (Performance: 4/5). The 360-degree camera on the central control screen helped me avoid fallen rocks on the roadside, and the safety provided by the 6 airbags allowed me to concentrate on driving (Safety: 5/5). My family in the rear seat remarked that the seat support was good, but the leather felt a bit stuffy (Interior: 4/5). When we reached home, the dashboard showed a fuel consumption of 5.3L, slightly higher than the official number but acceptable. This is the real life of a Mazda 6 owner.

Previously owned a Japanese grocery getter, but always felt it lacked "soul." Switching to the 2019 Mazda6 2.5L was definitely the right choice! The wood trim and stitching inside are so refined, they feel more premium than the Camry and Accord in the same class. The tactile feel is especially satisfying. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the 6-speed automatic is buttery smooth. Lightly step on the accelerator to follow traffic, and it doesn't jerk at all. With the HUD showing the speed, there's no need to lower your head—so convenient. On weekends, taking the family to drive up the Genting Highlands, the suspension provides ample support, with minimal body roll during cornering. The steering responds precisely, feeling even better than a friend's German mid-sized sedan. A minor issue is that the tire noise in the rear is somewhat noticeable (rear tires are 19-inch low-profile), and at 120km/h on the highway, you have to turn up the audio. But overall, it's amazing—the 360 camera makes parking in narrow alleys near the Petronas Towers super easy, the 11 speakers make Malaysian songs sound incredible, and even in congested city traffic, fuel consumption is just 8.5L. On highways, it can go as low as 6L, which is affordable given Malaysia's fuel prices. Safety features are fully loaded; when taking the kids out, the ISOFIX latches make it feel secure!

The power of this 2.2L engine is quite smooth when driving in the city, and it's not sluggish when overtaking. However, it feels a bit weak when accelerating on the highway.
