Mazda BT-50 Review

In the Malaysian pickup truck market, models that can meet daily commuting needs and handle light off-road conditions have always been the focus of attention for family users and small business owners. As the main model in the mid-range pickup truck market, the 2022 Mazda BT-50 Double Cab 1.9 High offers a lower price point while being equipped with rich features and balancing fuel economy. This has piqued the interest of budget-conscious but practicality-focused consumers. In this test drive, we focused on verifying whether it can balance power, space, and features to meet the dual demands of work and family, and to provide the target audience with a clear reference for their choices.
Approaching the vehicle body, the overall style of the 2022 BT-50 1.9 High leans towards rugged yet refined. The front features Mazda's signature shield-shaped grille design, adorned with chrome accents, connecting with the LED daytime running lights on both sides, enhancing its recognition. The sleek and simple body lines, 5280mm length paired with a width of 1870mm, maintain the grandeur of a pickup truck, while the height of 1805mm ensures no excessive pressure when parking in urban areas. At the rear, the vertical arrangement of the tail lights combined with black plastic cladding on the rear bumper enhances the off-road vibe. The lighting system combines halogen main lights and LED daytime running lights, while standard automatic headlights and front fog lights add to everyday convenience.
Sitting inside, the interior features a dark tone design, with a clear and intuitive dashboard layout that is easy to handle. In terms of materials, the door panels and seats are wrapped in leather, providing a comfortable touch. The central control area is equipped with a 9-inch touch screen supporting the Sound Plus function, with six speakers adequately meeting daily music needs. In terms of features, keyless entry and one-touch start eliminate the hassle of taking out the key. The front seats offer 8-way electric adjustment, allowing the driver to easily find a comfortable position. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning enables the driver and front passenger to set different temperatures, while rear air vents ensure passenger comfort in the back. Safety features are a highlight, with 7 airbags as standard across the vehicle, including front and rear head curtain airbags and knee airbags, complemented by electronic stability control, lane departure assist, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera, ensuring ample safety.
The space performance meets the expectations of a double-cab pickup. The 3125mm wheelbase ensures ample space for both front and rear passengers. For a 175cm tall front passenger, there is a fist-width of headroom above the head after adjusting the seat to a comfortable position. For a 175cm rear passenger, legroom is two fists, and headroom is one fist, creating a spacious feel without being cramped. In terms of storage, the front center armrest box and door storage compartments have generous capacities for items such as phones and water bottles. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, expanding the trunk's storage space when needed, and the rear center armrest adds more practicality.
Starting the vehicle, the idling noise of the 1.9T diesel engine is better controlled than expected, with no significant diesel engine vibrations. The engine delivers 150PS horsepower, with torque output peaking at 1800rpm, paired with an automatic transmission. The acceleration at start-up feels responsive and not sluggish. During daily urban commutes, the throttle pedal is calibrated for linear response, ensuring smooth acceleration. When overtaking on highways, pressing the accelerator results in a direct power output, making overtaking maneuvers effortless. The driving modes include both normal and economy options. In economy mode, the throttle response slows slightly, but fuel efficiency is enhanced.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal slack, making it very easy to drive daily. The front suspension uses a double-wishbone independent suspension, while the rear suspension is equipped with leaf springs. The suspension effectively filters out vibrations when dealing with minor bumps on city roads. On bumpy roads, rear passengers may experience some bouncing, but this is normal for pickup trucks. As a 4x4 model, its four-wheel-drive system performs stably on light off-road trails. When switching to four-wheel-drive mode, it can handle muddy or gravel roads smoothly, meeting the needs for weekend camping or light recovery situations outdoors.
During the fuel consumption test, we drove 100km each in the city and on highways. The overall fuel consumption was approximately 7.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7L/100km. However, considering the characteristics of diesel vehicles and the weight of the truck, this performance ranks above average among vehicles in its class. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are noticeable during high-speed driving but remain within an acceptable range. The seats offer good wrapping and support, ensuring that long drives won't lead to significant fatigue.
In summary, the core strength of the 2022 Mazda BT-50 Double Cab 1.9 High lies in balancing configuration and price—compared to competitors in the same price range, it offers richer features such as seven airbags, electric seats, and dual-zone air conditioning. The fuel economy of the 1.9T diesel engine makes it more suitable for daily commuting compared to the 3.0L version. Compared to the older 2018 BT-50 2.2 AT model, the new version shows significant improvements in safety features, upgrading from two airbags to seven, while also adding electric seats and a touch screen that align with modern needs.
This vehicle is suitable for two types of customers: first, small business owners who need a truck for both cargo transport and family outings—the loading capacity and passenger space meet both requirements; second, families with a budget around 120,000 MYR who value features and safety. It can handle weekend family trips to the countryside or mild off-road adventures. Overall, it is a highly practical and well-balanced mid-range pickup truck with a strong competitive edge in its price segment.
If you're looking for a pickup truck that works hard and takes care of your family, offers solid features without cutting corners, and is fuel-efficient, the 2022 Mazda BT-50 Double Cab 1.9 High is worth considering. While it may not have any particularly standout features, it provides reliable answers to all the core needs.
