In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-Segment SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers are no longer satisfied with basic commuting needs, but rather seek a balance between design, features, and driving experience. The 2020 Mazda CX-3 2.0 High is undoubtedly a popular contender in this market segment. As the top trim of the lineup, it not only continues Mazda's signature "Kodo" design but also comes equipped with a wealth of advanced safety features and intelligent technology rarely seen in its class. This has left many young families and individual users who value quality full of anticipation. This review will comprehensively analyze its static experience and dynamic performance to see if it truly stands out among models in the same price range.

At first glance, the 2020 CX-3 2.0 High immediately captures attention with the flowing lines of its Kodo design. The front features a large shield-shaped grille, accented by chrome trim and sharp LED headlights on both sides, making it highly recognizable. The side profile showcases a character line extending from the front fender to the rear, paired with 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels that are dynamic without being ostentatious. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a smoked-black design that mirrors the silver skid plate on the rear bumper, ensuring the rear of this compact SUV does not look too bland. In terms of details, automatic headlights, front fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers are all standard features, greatly enhancing daily convenience.

Upon entering the cabin, the interior of the CX-3 2.0 High leans towards a minimalist and refined style. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with silver trim, meeting the tactile and visual expectations of a top-tier configuration. A 7-inch touchscreen is positioned atop the dashboard, and its operational smoothness leaves little to be desired. The instrument cluster combines digital and analog displays, while the HUD head-up display—a rare feature in this class—shows real-time information such as speed and navigation, enhancing driving safety. In terms of features, keyless entry, push-button start, electrically adjustable front seats (with memory function for the driver), a 6-speaker audio system, and a 220V/230V power outlet are all included, catering to outdoor power needs. Notably, the rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold function, and with a 350L trunk capacity, it offers sufficient flexibility for carrying bulky items.

In terms of space, the CX-3 2.0 High has a wheelbase of 2,570mm, placing it within the mainstream level of B-Segment SUVs. The front row offers ample space; a 175cm-tall passenger can still have a fist's worth of headroom left after adjusting the seat. The rear provides around two fists' worth of legroom and a fist of headroom, which is sufficient for short family trips, but it may feel slightly cramped for long periods of travel. As for storage, the front and rear door pockets and central armrest storage compartments offer moderate capacity, while the front cup holders can accommodate large water bottles, showing attention to detail.

In terms of driving dynamics, the CX-3 2.0 High is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum of 156PS and a peak torque of 200N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power responds promptly at startup, and the low-rev torque output is smooth, making it fully sufficient for daily city commutes. When pressing the accelerator hard for rapid acceleration, the transmission’s shifting logic is clear and downshifts are prompt, providing sufficient confidence for overtaking. Driving modes include Normal and Sport. In Sport mode, throttle responsiveness is enhanced, engine revs are maintained at a higher range, and the power output feels more aggressive.

Handling is Mazda's forte, and the CX-3 2.0 High is no exception. The steering wheel is precise with minimal slack, and the body remains stable during cornering; the front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort and absorbs most road bumps. When crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, rear passengers won't feel significant jolts. In terms of braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes perform linearly, and the braking distance meets expectations, providing sufficient reassurance for daily driving.

In the fuel consumption test, we drove 100km under road conditions with 50% city traffic and 50% highway cruising. The indicated fuel consumption was 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.3L/100km, but considering the use of air conditioning and frequent starts and stops during real-world driving, this result is still quite good.

In terms of comfort, the CX-3 2.0 High's NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) control is well executed, with minimal wind and tire noise during high-speed driving. The electric seat provides good support, so your lower back won't feel fatigued during long drives. The single-zone automatic air conditioning cools quickly, and the rear air-conditioning vents ensure the comfort of rear passengers.

Safety features are a major highlight of the CX-3 2.0 High. Six airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), stability control, lane-change assist, and active braking are all standard. Front and rear parking cameras and rear parking sensors further enhance parking convenience. The 5-year/100,000km comprehensive warranty also ensures peace of mind for buyers.

Overall, the 2020 Mazda CX-3 2.0 High's core strengths lie in its well-rounded capabilities: its Kodo design looks stylish, the interior is well-equipped and practical, the driving dynamics are smooth and easy to handle, and the safety features are leading in its class. Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V or Toyota C-HR, the CX-3 2.0 High offers advantages in features such as the HUD (head-up display) and electric seats, while maintaining a reasonable price point, making it highly cost-effective.

This car is suitable for young families or individual users who prioritize design, driving experience, and safety features. It is nimble and easy to drive for daily urban commutes, while also offering adequate space and loading capacity for short weekend trips. If you do not pursue extreme rear seat space but value the vehicle's overall quality, the CX-3 2.0 High is a premium choice among B-Segment SUVs.

In conclusion, the 2020 Mazda CX-3 2.0 High is a model with "no obvious shortcomings." It blends design, features, and driving enjoyment seamlessly, making it one of the top options worth prioritizing in its class.

Pros
Quick power response, the throttle is responsive without jerking, powerful for overtaking and climbing, precise and smooth handling
Rich safety features, 6 airbags + active braking, can automatically stop in rain to avoid rear-end collisions
Practical features like HUD heads-up display and rain-sensing wipers, enhancing driving convenience
Cons
The rear space is cramped, passengers of 175cm may experience leg fatigue on long journeys, and child seats may press against the knees.
The trunk has a capacity of only 350L, leaving insufficient space after storing two carry-ons or durian boxes.
Lacks full-speed-range ACC, requiring manual operation for urban follow-ups, and the 7-inch central control screen is relatively small.

Switched from the old Toyota Vios to the CX-3 High version, and it's truly a leap in quality! Crawling through traffic during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the SkyActiv 2.0L+6AT is as smooth as sipping white coffee, the accelerator is responsive without jerking, and the steering is precise enough to navigate narrow alleys. On weekends, when taking the family to the foothills of Genting Highlands, the 156HP is powerful enough for uphill climbs, and the HUD head-up display saves the hassle of looking down at the navigation. Safety features are fully loaded, with 6 airbags + active braking; last time during a rainy day I almost rear-ended a car, but the system braked automatically and saved me! Minor flaws are that the rear space feels a bit cramped for friends who are 175cm tall, and legs can get sore after sitting for long journeys; the 350L trunk is full after holding two carry-on suitcases and a stroller. But in Malaysia's B-Segment, at this price point, having LED headlights, memory for electric seats, and front and rear radar imaging—what more could you want? The 5-year 100,000-km warranty also gives peace of mind, making it absolutely perfect for daily use and family commutes!

Previously drove the old City model, switched to the CX-3 High purely because I was captivated by the KODO design! During morning rush hour, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine + 6-speed automatic transmission runs as smoothly as butter on the highway with LDP. Overtaking is effortless with a tap on the gas, and the HUD allows me to check my speed without looking down—super convenient. Took the family to the base of Genting Highlands over the weekend, and its cornering body roll is smaller compared to my friend's HR-V. The steering wheel is precise, and even for someone 175cm tall, sitting in the rear for long periods is comfortable. I gave safety 4 stars because it lacks full-speed-range adaptive cruise control (ACC), so I have to manually follow cars in the city. The 7-inch central screen does feel a bit small for 2024 standards, but it supports CarPlay, which is sufficient. Last week, it rained heavily and caused traffic jams in KL. The rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights were really convenient, and opening and starting the car with the keyless system was seamless. The only small drawback: the 350L trunk gets full with just two carry-on suitcases, so camping gear requires folding down the rear seats. But considering its looks and handling, there's truly no competitor at this price point in Malaysia!

Last week, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Suddenly, heavy rain poured down, and the wipers were sweeping the glass like crazy, but the view remained clear—this LED headlight's penetration power is truly impressive. While climbing the mountain road, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine showed particularly smooth power delivery, and the steering wheel responded exactly as directed, with the body staying so stable during turns it felt glued to the ground. However, with two kids in safety seats in the back row, they kept complaining, "Dad, I want to stretch my legs," as their knees were cramped. The 350L trunk was filled after just two boxes of durians. But every time I parked by the roadside, people always turned their heads to look at this Soul Red—it was worth it.
