User Review

As the demand for "everyday usability and performance" in the supercar market rises, mid-engine supercars are no longer solely focused on track extremes but are beginning to balance practicality for everyday use. The 2018 McLaren 720S, as the flagship model of the brand's Super Series, takes "balancing track performance and daily comfort" as its core selling point. This review will comprehensively analyze its static design, space practicality, and dynamic driving performance to see how it stands out among its peers.

In terms of exterior design, the 720S continues McLaren's signature streamlined style, with smooth and aggressive lines throughout. The front features a large air intake grille, complemented by slender LED daytime running lights, making it highly recognizable. The grooves on the hood not only optimize aerodynamics but also enhance the visual layering. On the side of the vehicle, the iconic "butterfly doors" are the most striking feature, providing both a sense of ceremony and easy access; the waistline extends from the front to the rear, paired with 20-inch wheels to create a low and sporty posture. At the rear, the LED taillights feature a circular design, echoing the quad exhaust layout. The active rear wing automatically adjusts its angle depending on speed, providing additional downforce at high speeds and reducing drag at lower speeds. All lighting systems come standard with LED sources, ensuring clear illumination and enhanced safety during night driving.

Inside the cabin, the interior is centered around the driver, featuring a minimalist yet functional layout. The center console uses extensive Alcantara materials and carbon fiber panels, offering a refined texture and enhancing the sporty vibe. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster provides three display modes tailored for track, sport, and comfort scenarios, presenting information clearly and intuitively. Regarding core configurations, it is equipped with the McLaren Infotainment system, which supports Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity, and operates smoothly. The seats feature a sporty bucket design with strong support and electric adjustment for lumbar and lateral support per individual needs. In terms of details, the air conditioning vents are hidden to reduce visual clutter. The steering wheel integrates multimedia controls and paddle shifters, offering a hefty feel with a moderate size for easy handling.

Regarding space performance, the dimensions of the 720S are 4543×1930×1196mm, with a wheelbase of 2670mm. Front-row seating is spacious, with a 180cm tall passenger having a fist's worth of headroom and ample legroom. However, the rear seats are more suitable for storing items rather than accommodating adults for an extended period. In terms of storage capacity, the front trunk offers 150 liters of space, enough for a carry-on suitcase and some personal items. A small storage compartment under the center console can hold a phone or wallet, which generally meets daily needs. For comfort features, the front row is equipped with a dual-zone automatic climate control system, while the rear has dedicated air vents. The center armrest box includes USB ports for charging, making overall practicality above average for a supercar.

The powertrain is equipped with a 4.0T V8 twin-turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 530kW (720 horsepower) and a peak torque of 770Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. In actual driving, the power response is swift during takeoff, with noticeable thrust even with a light press on the accelerator. In sport mode, gear shifts are fast and smooth with minimal jerks, and it accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 2.9 seconds. When overtaking, flooring the accelerator provides instant power, and the high-speed acceleration is incredibly strong. The differences between driving modes are apparent: in comfort mode, the throttle response is smooth, suitable for daily commuting; in track mode, the engine roars louder, and the gear-shifting logic becomes more aggressive, meeting the demands of track driving.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the 720S features a carbon-fiber monocoque body, with a lightweight design that enhances handling flexibility. The steering wheel is precise with minimal dead zone, delivering clear directional feedback during cornering. The suspension system comes equipped with adaptive dampers, filtering most road bumps in comfort mode, while in sports mode, the support is enhanced, providing excellent body roll control on winding roads. As for driving stability, the vehicle remains stable during high-speed driving with no noticeable floating sensation; on speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations, minimizing bumps transmitted to the cabin and balancing sportiness with comfort.

In specialized performance testing, fuel efficiency is average, with fuel consumption of about 12L/100km under mixed conditions and dropping to 9L/100km on highways, which is acceptable for a supercar. Regarding braking performance, it is equipped with a carbon-ceramic brake system, achieving a 100-0km/h braking distance of just 30 meters. The brakes respond quickly without significant thermal decay, ensuring safety during track driving.

In terms of driving comfort, the 720S offers excellent noise control, effectively isolating wind and tire noise at high speeds, while only the engine’s exhaust note is transmitted into the cabin, but at a moderate volume that is not disruptive. For seat comfort, the sport bucket seats provide strong support, and even during long drives, they prevent fatigue with adequate lumbar support. The paddle shifters are made of metal, offering a crisp tactile feel and clear shifting feedback, enhancing driving pleasure.

In summary, the core highlights of the 2018 McLaren 720S include its powerful performance, precise handling, practical space design, and relatively comfortable daily driving experience. Compared to models in the same class such as the Ferrari 488 GTB, the 720S has an advantage in terms of technology features and daily comfort. When compared to the Lamborghini Huracán, it demonstrates superior handling agility and fuel efficiency. Overall, the 720S is suitable for consumers who seek both track performance and daily practicality, especially younger affluent individuals or supercar enthusiasts who value driving enjoyment with a certain degree of practicality.

Overall, the 720S successfully balances the performance of a supercar with everyday usability, making it a "track weapon you can drive to work." Whether it’s the exhilarating experience of weekend track days or the comfortable commute of daily driving, it meets these needs well, standing out as a well-rounded choice in its class.

As the owner of a 2018 McLaren 720S, driving this car in Malaysia is absolutely thrilling! The exterior gets 4 points because its design is truly stunning. When the butterfly doors open, the turning heads at the KLCC parking lot go off the charts. The streamlined body cruising on the Penang coastal highway, with the sea breeze flowing, feels like you're in a movie. However, sometimes when parked by the roadside, it can be a bit embarrassing being surrounded by onlookers, and washing the car requires extra caution with those carbon fiber components—this is a minor flaw though. Performance deserves full marks! The speed limit on Malaysian highways is 110, but just stepping on the gas makes you feel the instant thrust, forgetting all your worries. Last month, I went up to Genting Highlands, and the power during the climb effortlessly delivered; cornering was incredibly stable, far superior to the sports cars I used to drive. The only issue is that it's a bit fuel-intensive in city traffic, but who buys a supercar to save fuel, right? All in all, this car's performance on Malaysian roads is absolutely impeccable—performance enthusiasts can buy it with their eyes closed!

As the owner of a 2018 McLaren 720S, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I genuinely feel that this car is perfect for local road conditions! The performance deserves full marks. The 3.8T twin-turbo engine is absolutely exhilarating when overtaking on the North-South Expressway. A deep press on the accelerator provides instant thrust with an explosive sense of acceleration. It easily surpasses 200km/h on the highway, and the chassis tuning is exceptionally stable. The car maintains perfect posture during cornering without any floatiness. The exterior design has 100% head-turning appeal. The streamlined body combined with butterfly doors always attracts attention; every time I park at the KLCC parking lot, people come over to take photos—it's super impressive. In terms of safety, it's also reassuring. The active braking and lane-keeping assist have been a huge help in Kuala Lumpur's congested roads. One time, I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the system intervened and stopped the car in time, saving me. I would give the interior a score of 4. After all, it's a supercar, so the storage space is indeed limited. However, the carbon fiber panels and Alcantara materials are top-notch in quality. The only minor flaw is that the infotainment screen sometimes responds a bit slowly, but it's entirely forgivable. All in all, driving this car in Malaysia is absolutely a pleasure!

As the owner of a 2018 McLaren 720S, driving this car in Malaysia is both exhilarating and reassuring! I must give full marks for safety. Last year, while driving on the highway from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, I suddenly encountered a truck in front of me braking hard. At that time, my speed was around 140km/h. The moment I slammed on the brakes, the stability control system immediately intervened, and the tires firmly gripped the road. In the end, I stopped less than half a meter from the truck — it still gives me chills thinking about it, but this safety system really saved me! As for performance, I’d give it 4 stars. It’s not that it’s not strong enough, it’s just that Malaysia’s road conditions make it feel like “a hero without a stage.” In city areas like Jalan Bukit Bintang where there’s traffic congestion, the power of the 4.0T twin-turbo engine has no room to shine. On the contrary, its stiff suspension makes crossing speed bumps quite cautious. But once you hit the long straights of the North-South Expressway, stepping on the accelerator gives you such incredible thrust that it pins you to your seat. Revving the engine above 5,000 RPM creates a roar that’s even more thrilling than the KLCC clock chime. Overtaking, especially trucks, feels as effortless as slicing through tofu. The only regret is that the local highway speed limit is 110, so you can only go up to around 160 at most, leaving you feeling like its full potential hasn’t been unleashed.

As the owner of a 2018 McLaren 720S, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I believe I have quite a bit to say about its appearance and safety. First, about the appearance, I think a 4-star rating is quite reasonable. Every time I drive to KLCC or George Town, the attention it gets is overwhelming—once the butterfly doors are opened, the surrounding gazes never stop. The streamlined body feels incredible when speeding on the highway, especially when overtaking on the North-South Expressway; from the side, it looks like it's gliding on the ground. However, there’s a small regret—the front lip is way too low, so I have to be extremely cautious with speed bumps in some of the older districts in Kuala Lumpur; otherwise, it’s very easy to scrape, which is why I knocked off some points here. In terms of safety, I’d also give it 4 stars. After all, for a supercar, basic configurations like auto braking and lane-keeping assist are included. Last time, on the highway in Selangor, when encountering a car that suddenly changed lanes, the system alerted me in time and responded quite quickly. However, there was one time when I drove to Malacca in heavy rain, and the road was a bit slippery. Although the vehicle stability system kicked in, I still felt a bit nervous—maybe because of the low center of gravity of the supercar, you have to be extra careful driving in the rain. Overall, the safety features are sufficient, but it would be even better with more advanced driving assistance systems.

This seat's wrapping feeling is amazing! When stuck in traffic, touching the fine-textured suede reduces half the irritation.
