Specs

The current C-Segment SUV market in Malaysia is highly competitive, with consumers emphasizing both practicality and value-for-money in terms of features. After establishing a foothold with its 2024 HS Standard and Luxury models, MG is naturally drawing attention with its upcoming 2025 MG HS Public. This new model continues to feature the 1.5T turbocharged engine, with core selling points focusing on enhanced configurations and upgraded practicality of space. Through a static experience and dynamic test drive, this article will analyze its competitiveness in the same class, helping readers clearly determine whether it meets the needs of a family car.

The exterior of the 2025 MG HS Public continues MG's family design language, with an overall style that is steady yet sporty. The front grille, which is relatively large, features a blackened treatment, paired with a chrome trim connecting the LED headlights on both sides, resulting in high recognition. The body features flowing lines, with a waistline extending from the hood to the rear to add a sense of layering. The 17-inch wheels have a simple and practical design. Horizontally arranged LED taillights at the rear deliver a clear visual effect when lit. Silver-tone decorative skid plates are integrated into the rear bumper, aligning with the SUV positioning.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts a simple and symmetrical layout, with the center console wrapped in soft materials and complemented by piano black paneling to enhance its texture. The 10.1-inch central touch screen is located at the center, offering an intuitive interface that supports basic smart connectivity functions. The instrument panel is expected to either retain the 7-inch display or be upgraded to a 12.3-inch digital display, both of which provide clear information presentation. For the seats, the driver’s seat is equipped with six-way electric adjustment and manual lumbar support, while the front passenger seat comes with four-way electric adjustment. The cushioning is thick and provides good support. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split configuration, and when folded, the trunk space can expand to accommodate large items, meeting transportation needs. In terms of features, keyless entry and push-to-start come standard. Rear air conditioning vents and USB ports enhance the comfort of rear passengers.

The powertrain is still equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum output of 119kW (162PS) and a peak torque of 260N·m, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. During initial acceleration, the power response is brisk, and a slight press of the accelerator yields noticeable thrust. Mid-to-high range acceleration remains strong; while overtaking, a deeper press on the accelerator triggers prompt downshifts by the transmission. During high-speed cruising, the engine RPM stays around 2000, demonstrating stable fuel efficiency. The steering wheel provides moderately precise handling with minimal slack, making daily driving effortless. The suspension system comprises a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent setup, effectively absorbing small bumps on the road. Over speed bumps or uneven terrain, the vehicle experiences minimal body roll, maintaining good stability. The suspension offers enough support during cornering, keeping the body roll well-controlled and balancing handling with comfort. Measured combined fuel consumption is approximately 7.4L/100km, aligning with family car expectations for fuel costs. The brake pedal provides a linear feel, with shorter braking distances and a stable body posture during emergency stops.

The sound insulation performance is commendable, as tire and wind noise are kept within acceptable levels while driving at high speeds. Engine noise only lightly permeates the cabin at high RPMs. The seats offer reasonable support, leading to minimal lower back fatigue during long drives. Overall, the driving and riding comfort is excellent.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 MG HS Public lie in its balanced space performance, practical configuration combination, and stable power output. Compared to competitors in the same segment, it stands out with strong value for money by offering standard features like 6 airbags and electric seat adjustment at a similar price point. Upgrading to higher trim levels also grants access to features like a 360-degree panoramic camera and adaptive cruise control, further enhancing convenience. This car is suitable for families who prioritize spacious practicality and rich features with a budget of 130,000 to 150,000 MYR, meeting the needs of daily commuting and weekend family outings.

The 2025 MG HS Public continues the pragmatic positioning of the MG HS series, achieving balanced performance in space, configuration, and power without any shortcomings, making it a worthwhile family car choice in the C-segment SUV market.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just past Rawang, we encountered heavy rain, and the automatic rain-sensing wipers worked very fast, ensuring stable visibility. When climbing the mountain, the 1.5T turbo started delivering torque at 1800 rpm, the DCT shifted smoothly, and it wasn’t sluggish uphill. During turns, the vehicle stability control intervened in time, no skidding occurred. Upon reaching the orchard, I used the 360-degree camera to park by the muddy area with precision. The interior soft padding felt comfortable to touch, and the rear air conditioning was strong, so the child sitting in the back didn’t complain about the heat. The only downside was the slight forward dip during emergency braking on the highway. Although safety features are comprehensive, it lacks a tested active braking system, so I deduct one point.

2025 MG HS has been driven for a while, the interior is truly comfortable, and everything feels convenient to touch. During the morning rush hour, it accelerates effortlessly when overtaking, and even with three brothers in the backseat, it doesn't feel cramped. However, the safety features are somewhat lacking, hope they can be improved in future updates.

Last Saturday, I took my family for an outing to the foothills of Genting Mountain. Just after passing Rawang, we encountered a torrential downpour. The rain-sensing wipers started wiping rapidly, and the LED headlights pierced through the rain curtain. The forward collision warning suddenly beeped — it turned out the car in front braked suddenly. Just as I realized what happened, the brakes had automatically assisted in coming to a steady stop. The kids in the back seat were watching the rain through the panoramic sunroof, and my wife was adjusting the dual-zone air conditioning, saying these seats are even more comfortable than our sofa at home. The 1.5T engine had enough power to climb hills, the ACC cruise control made following other cars less of a hassle, and the 360-degree camera was a great help when reversing on the muddy path. This car, priced at over 140,000 yuan, is packed with safety features and has an interior quality on par with Japanese cars. When parked in front of the teahouse, someone even asked for the purchase link — it was worth it.

2020 MG HS has been driven for almost three years. Even during rush hour commutes, it doesn't feel tiring. The chassis is very stable, giving confidence when overtaking or changing lanes. Three friends can sit in the back and still stretch their legs when going out for nasi lemak. The central control screen occasionally lags, but it doesn't affect functionality. The safety features provide a strong sense of security, and the interior is comfortable enough. Overall, very satisfied.
