Mitsubishi Xpander 2023 Review

In Malaysia's family MPV market, 7-seater models have always been a rigid demand, with consumers valuing both space practicality and having clear requirements for configuration and cost-effectiveness. The 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander, as a popular choice in this market segment, returns this time with upgraded features like standard LED headlights and a 9-inch central control screen while keeping the price at RM 100,980, emphasizing a balanced performance of "high configuration + spacious interior." The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether its static experience meets family needs and whether its dynamic performance can handle daily commuting and long-distance travel.
From the exterior perspective, the overall design of the 2023 Xpander leans towards a youthful style, featuring a large trapezoidal front grille paired with chrome trim connected to the LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognition. The side profile of the vehicle showcases smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, adding a sense of three-dimensionality. The gap between the 16-inch tires and wheel arches is moderate, maintaining the MPV's practicality without appearing bulky. At the rear, the horizontal design of LED taillights complements the front headlights, while the silver skid plate on the lower part of the rear bumper adds a touch of crossover vibe. The lighting system is a highlight, with all models equipped with standard LED headlights offering sufficient brightness, and the daytime running lights remain visible even during the day, improving driving safety.
Inside, the interior adopts a dark color scheme, and the symmetrical layout of the center console places buttons and knobs in convenient positions. Regarding materials, the upper part of the door panels and dashboard are wrapped in soft-touch materials, which, while not luxurious, align well with vehicles in this price range. The 9-inch touch screen in the center console is the visual focal point, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring with decent operating smoothness. The six-speaker audio system delivers sound quality that is slightly above average for this class. For seating, the front seats are manually adjustable with moderate cushioning that ensures comfort during long periods of sitting. The second-row seats have a 60:40 split-fold feature, and thanks to the 2775mm wheelbase, it offers generous legroom, leaving a 175cm tall passenger with about two fists of space behind their knees. The third-row seats are more suitable for children or adults on short trips and can be folded in a 50:50 split. When folded down, the trunk space expands to 781 liters, enough to hold a stroller or suitcases. In terms of storage, the front and rear door panels come with cup holders and storage slots, and the central armrest box is spacious enough for small items, maximizing practicality.
In terms of power, the 2023 Xpander is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivering a maximum power output of 77.2kW (105PS) and a peak torque of 141N·m, paired with an AT transmission. During daily driving, the power delivery feels smooth at startup, making it suitable for city commuting. When accelerating beyond 60km/h, the power response remains linear, but overtaking requires pressing the accelerator more deeply to gain sufficient thrust. The transmission's gear-shifting logic is clear, with smooth upshifts and minimal jerkiness during downshifts. The vehicle offers only a standard driving mode; although it doesn't have the aggressiveness of a sport mode, it is adequate for family use.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is lightweight and precise, making U-turns or parking in narrow city streets very nimble. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, which effectively absorbs small road bumps without causing noticeable discomfort for passengers. When going over speed bumps or through large potholes, the rear suspension rebounds slightly faster, but overall stability remains intact. For braking, the combination of front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes delivers braking performance on par with its class. The pedal feel is linear, offering drivers sufficient confidence during stops.
In the fuel consumption test, we drove 50km each in urban congested areas and on highways, resulting in a combined fuel consumption of 7.2L/100km, which is close to the official data. For a 7-seater MPV, this fuel economy performance is commendable. Regarding noise control, at speeds below 60km/h, the main noise inside the car comes from the tires; at speeds exceeding 80km/h, wind noise becomes gradually noticeable but does not affect normal conversation. The seat comfort stands out during long-distance driving, and the second-row air conditioning vents and power outlets also enhance the experience for rear passengers.
In terms of safety features, the 2023 Xpander comes standard with ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, seatbelt reminders for all seats, and 2 airbags. Although the number of airbags is fewer compared to some competitors, all the basic safety configurations are covered. As for auxiliary features, the rear parking sensors and hill-start assist are very practical in daily use, especially suitable for novice drivers.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander lie in its spacious interior, practical features, and affordable price. Compared to the Toyota Veloz Cross in the same class, it has a longer wheelbase and better third-row space; compared to the Honda BR-V, it offers more standard features and better value for money. This vehicle is suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and space, especially for those who frequently travel with elderly and children. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, sufficiently equipped, and spacious 7-seater MPV, the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander is a great choice.
