Nissan Almera 2023 Review

The B-segment sedan market in Malaysia has always been a competitive space for practical families and young professionals. This group of users values fuel economy for daily commuting, as well as practicality in space and basic safety features. The 2023 Nissan Almera 1.0L Turbo VL, as the entry-level high-specification version of the series, is priced at RM 83,888 and focuses on a combination of 1.0T turbocharged power and standard active safety systems. The primary goal of our test drive is to verify whether its performance in daily usage scenarios can meet the needs of target users.
From a distance, the exterior of the Almera VL retains Nissan's family-style design, with a V-Motion front grille complemented by chrome accents, offering good recognition. The front end features simple lines, halogen headlights with an automatic lighting function, and a moderately structured headlamp unit. Circular front fog lights below provide additional visibility during nighttime driving. The body side profile has smooth lines, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, paired with 195/65 R15 tires, giving it a well-proportioned overall appearance. For the rear, the LED taillights adopt a horizontal layout, with clear visual effects when illuminated. A chrome strip under the trunk lid corresponds with the front grille, while rear fog lights are located on both sides of the bumper, resulting in a stable and straightforward design without excessive embellishments.
Stepping inside, the interior of the Almera VL features a black color scheme. The dashboard is made of hard plastic material, providing an average tactile experience, which is consistent with its price range. The multi-functional steering wheel supports audio control and call functions, and is convenient to use. The instrument cluster is of the Electroluminescent Analogue type, with clear display showing information such as RPM, speed, and fuel level. The center console screen is a Standard Display, and while not very large, it includes basic features like Bluetooth connectivity and USB playback, which are sufficient for daily use. The seats are manually adjustable and made of fabric, offering average wrapping but good support, ensuring no significant discomfort over extended periods. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, extending the trunk space. Combined with the front cup holders and storage compartments, its storage capabilities meet the needs of daily family usage.
In terms of space, the Almera VL has a wheelbase of 2620mm, which is typical for B-segment sedans. The front row offers ample space, with a 175cm tall passenger still having a fist-width of headroom after adjusting the seating position. The rear space is also impressive, providing two fist-widths of legroom and four fingers of headroom, ensuring comfort even when seating five people. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents and power outlets, enhancing the comfort of rear passengers. The trunk has a standard capacity of 480 liters, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats to accommodate larger items.
In terms of performance, the Almera VL is equipped with a 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum power of 74kW (100PS) and a peak torque of 152N·m. It is paired with a CVT transmission. Acceleration at start is responsive, with a noticeable push-back sensation when lightly pressing the accelerator, making it suitable for urban driving with frequent stops and starts. Acceleration is smooth, and the CVT transmission offers clear shift logic with no obvious stuttering. On highways, after exceeding 100km/h, the power reserve for further acceleration becomes slightly insufficient, but it is adequate for most overtaking needs. There are two driving modes available: Eco and Normal. In Eco mode, throttle response is slightly softer, making it better for fuel-efficient daily commuting.
In terms of handling performance, the Almera VL has a lightweight steering wheel with minimal play, precise direction, and agile handling for daily driving. The front suspension is a MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear suspension is a Double Lateral Link suspension, tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, providing good body stability. While cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, without significant sway, giving the driver sufficient confidence. In terms of braking performance, the brake pedal has a moderate travel with linear braking force output, maintaining body stability during emergency braking.
In the fuel consumption test, we drove 50km in both city and highway conditions. The actual combined fuel consumption was 5.8L/100km, slightly higher than the official rating of 5.4L/100km, but considering traffic congestion during actual driving, this performance is still commendable. In terms of noise control, cabin noise is relatively low at low speeds, mainly from tires and wind; at high speeds, engine noise becomes more noticeable but remains within acceptable levels, not affecting normal communication among passengers inside the car.
Overall, the 2023 Nissan Almera 1.0L Turbo VL's core strengths lie in its smooth power delivery, practical space, and standard active safety systems. Compared to its peers like the Honda City 1.5L V and Toyota Vios 1.5G, the 1.0T engine in the Almera VL performs better at startup and acceleration, offers more spacious interiors, and comes standard with safety features like active braking and forward collision warning, offering better value for money. However, its interior materials and infotainment system are less premium than the City, which is something to consider.
This car is suitable for families who prioritize fuel efficiency, practical space, and basic safety features, especially for users whose daily commutes include urban traffic and highways. Its power is sufficient for everyday family travel, the space accommodates five passengers comfortably, and fuel consumption is also economical. If you're seeking balanced performance and have a budget of around RM 80,000, the Almera VL is a good choice.
In conclusion, the 2023 Nissan Almera 1.0L Turbo VL is a practical B-segment sedan with impressive performance in power, space, safety features, and fuel consumption. While it has some shortcomings in interior design and features, its overall value for money stands out, making it a great choice to meet the daily needs of family users.
