The Southeast Asian electric vehicle market is rapidly shifting toward the entry-level market segment. The 2025 Proton e.Mas 5, as the brand's newly launched C-segment pure electric model, enters the market with pricing of RM 56,800 for the Prime version and RM 69,800 for the Premium version. Its key selling points include cost-effective safety configurations, expandable storage space, and range performance suitable for city commuting. This article provides an in-depth assessment through a static experience and dynamic test drive to see if this model meets the everyday usage needs of local family users.

In terms of exterior design, the e.Mas 5 adopts a simple urban style. The front features a closed grille, with halogen headlights (Prime version) or LED headlights (Premium version) complemented by a continuous daytime running light to enhance nighttime recognition. The body side has smooth lines, with a length of 4135mm and a wheelbase of 2650mm ensuring space utilization within its compact size. The Prime version is equipped with 205/65 R15 tires, while the Premium version upgrades to 205/60 R16. At the rear, the LED taillight assembly complements the front lighting group, and rear fog lights are standard. The overall design emphasizes practicality without excessive decorative elements.

Inside the cabin, the center console layout is clear. The Prime version is equipped with a 14.6-inch FHD central control screen, while the Premium version upgrades to a 16-inch screen. The screen supports the Sound Plus function and offers smooth operation in line with segment standards. The seat material is fabric (Prime version) or faux leather (Premium version), with moderate support. A multifunctional steering wheel is standard, with manual height and angle adjustment. The instrument panel is an 8.8-inch LED display that clearly shows key information such as range and speed. In terms of configuration, both versions come standard with keyless entry, automatic air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically foldable side mirrors. The Premium version also adds active braking, forward collision warning, and a 360-degree panoramic camera, providing more comprehensive safety features.

In terms of space performance, the 2650mm wheelbase provides ample rear seating space. A 175cm passenger sitting in the rear has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, meeting the daily needs of families. The trunk offers 375L of storage capacity, which can be expanded to 1320L by folding down the rear seats, accommodating large items such as strollers or suitcases. In terms of storage details, the front central armrest box, door panel storage compartments, and rear cup holders are well-designed. USB power ports are provided in the front row for convenient charging.

During the dynamic test drive, the Prime version is equipped with a 58kW (79PS) permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a maximum torque of 130N·m and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.3 seconds. The power responds quickly, making it suitable for city starts and overtaking. The Premium version's motor power is increased to 85kW (116PS) with a torque of 150N·m, offering smoother acceleration. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension. It effectively absorbs vibrations when passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, maintaining good body stability. During cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, and the steering wheel's precision meets the standards for a family-oriented vehicle.

In terms of range and energy consumption, the Prime version is equipped with a 30.12kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, offering an official range of 225km. In actual urban commuting with the air conditioning on, the range achievement rate is approximately 85%, with an energy consumption of about 14kWh/100km. The Premium version has a battery capacity of 40.16kWh, an official range of 325km, and an actual range achievement rate of about 82%, with an energy consumption of approximately 15kWh/100km. For charging efficiency, both versions support fast charging from 30% to 80% in 0.35 hours. For slow charging, the Prime version takes 4.4 hours, while the Premium version takes 3.9 hours, making them compatible for home slow charging and public fast charging scenarios.

In terms of driving and riding comfort, the vehicles perform well in controlling tire and wind noise. At speeds under 60km/h, there is almost no noticeable noise, and at 100km/h, wind noise increases slightly but does not affect conversations. The Prime version is equipped with cruise control, while the Premium version is upgraded to ACC adaptive cruise control, making long-distance driving more relaxed. The seat support is good, allowing for long periods of sitting without fatigue. Overall comfort meets expectations for a family car.

Overall, the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5's core strengths lie in its high cost-effectiveness and comprehensive safety features—both versions come standard with six airbags, electronic stability control, lane change assist, and lane departure warning, while the Premium version adds an active safety system, making its safety performance superior to competitors in the same price range. The space expandability and range capability are suitable for urban family daily commutes and short trips.

This model is ideal for family users who value safety and practicality. The Prime version stands out for its cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for entry-level EV buyers with limited budgets. The Premium version offers more comprehensive features, making it a better choice for users with higher demands for safety and comfort. Overall, the e.Mas 5 is a well-balanced family electric vehicle with strong competitiveness in the entry-level EV market.

Pros
The exterior design is aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated, with smooth body lines and highly recognizable LED daytime running lights.
The safety configuration is practical and comprehensive, including 6 airbags, lane departure warning, etc. The active safety system can effectively prevent accidents.
The interior is well-equipped, featuring a large and smooth-running central control screen, fast cooling automatic air conditioning, and spacious, comfortable seating.
Cons
Some models use halogen material for taillights, which lack a refined feel at night. It's recommended to upgrade to full LED.
Some models lack a 360-degree panoramic camera, making reversing or parking in narrow alleys less convenient.
The interior feels plasticky, and the leather on the front seats of some models is somewhat firm, which can cause fatigue during long drives.

Owner of 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Prime
As the owner of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Prime, I have been driving in Malaysia for almost three months. In terms of exterior and safety, I think both are "solid and reliable," and a rating of 4 is quite appropriate. Regarding the exterior, the body lines fall into the category of "timeless design" — the Proton logo at the front is positioned on a closed grille, paired with LED daytime running lights, making it quite recognizable in the traffic flow during Kuala Lumpur's morning and evening rush hours, though it's not overly flashy. I chose the silver-gray color. When parked downstairs at the residential area or in the company parking lot, my colleagues often say, "It looks more upscale than its actual price." However, the halogen taillights at the rear — if replaced with full LEDs — would look even sleeker. When driving along the coastal road in Penang at night, it feels like it lacks a bit of refinement, which is a small regret that kept me from giving it full marks. As for safety, I feel quite assured. Last week on the LDP highway in Selangor, the car in front suddenly braked hard. I was a bit slow to react, but the lane departure warning started beeping continuously, and the vehicle stability control intervened in time, preventing the car from veering off course. When driving with my family to Genting Highlands, where there are many mountain road curves, the six airbags and standard lane-change assist throughout the range were very practical. My wife, who sat in the passenger seat, often said, "I feel securely wrapped." However, once in the old town area of Ipoh, while reversing, even though there were rear sensors, the image resolution was average, and I almost scraped a motorcycle on the roadside. It would be perfect if it could be upgraded to a 360-degree panoramic camera. Overall, these two aspects are sufficient for everyday use. There are no major issues, but room for small improvements. A rating of 4 is very fair!

As the owner of a 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium, my experience using it in Malaysia has truly exceeded expectations! Let me talk about the performance first. The 0-100 km/h acceleration of 5.9 seconds is like a magic weapon during the morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur. As soon as the light turns green, it easily leaves other cars behind, and the response of the motor is incredibly quick, making overtaking effortless. Driving on the North-South Expressway at high speed is also very stable; the 116 horsepower is completely sufficient, and a top speed of 150 km/h fully meets daily needs. As for the interior, I’d rate it a 4. The 16-inch central control screen is really large and operates very smoothly, though there’s a slight plastic feel. However, for this price point, I’m already very satisfied with such configurations. The seats have good cushioning support, so driving for long hours doesn’t feel tiring. What reassures me the most is the safety performance. With 6 airbags, combined with features like active braking and lane departure warning, these configurations are really practical given Malaysia's complex road conditions. Once, while on a mountain road in Penang, a motorcycle suddenly darted out, and the active braking system stepped in just in time, helping me avoid an accident. I’m truly grateful for this function. Overall, this car performs exceptionally well in Malaysia, offering excellent value for money!

As the owner of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Prime, after driving it for almost three months in Malaysia, the exterior and interior really surprised me! Let’s talk about the exterior first. This small car is especially eye-catching in the KL traffic—its rounded front with LED daytime running lights always turns heads when I park it near the LRT station. Last week, I took my family to Malacca for a trip, and while resting by the roadside, a local uncle even asked if it was Proton's new EV. The car's streamlined body and white paint look high-quality under the tropical sun, not cheap at all, and definitely doesn’t feel like a car that costs just over 50,000 MYR. The interior exceeds my expectations even more! The 14.6-inch central control screen is bigger than my friend's Japanese car's, and scrolling through social media while stuck in traffic on Jalan Bukit Bintang is super enjoyable. The seats are made of knitted fabric, and despite Malaysia's hot weather, sitting on them doesn’t cause sweaty discomfort. The rear space is also sufficient. Last week, I drove three colleagues to Petaling Jaya to eat durian, and they all commented that it was more spacious than they expected. The sunshade is the most thoughtful feature—when picking up the kids from school in the afternoon and pulling it down, the kids in the back seat don’t complain about the sun anymore. The layout of the central console is very simple, with few physical buttons, but they’re all within easy reach. Adjusting the volume while using cruise control on the highway is especially convenient. In conclusion, these two aspects are impeccable—full marks, well deserved!

As the owner of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Prime, after three months of driving in Malaysia, I genuinely feel this car truly understands local needs! First, the interior deserves full marks! The 14.6-inch central control screen is perfect for streaming shows during traffic jams, and the air conditioning is automatic. When entering the car under Kuala Lumpur's 35-degree heat, it cools down quickly, which is incredibly friendly for Malaysians who are sensitive to heat. The seat materials feel very comfortable, and the rear seat fits three friends for long drives to Johor Bahru without feeling cramped. The 375L trunk capacity is just right for packing our luggage for a trip to Genting Highlands — totally sufficient. For safety, I would give it 4 stars, mainly because the configurations are practical — six airbags, lane departure warning, and lane change assist are all included. Last time on Penang's mountainous roads, I almost crossed the lane, and the system immediately alerted me, giving me a real scare. However, if it could include a 360-degree panoramic view camera, it’d be even better, especially considering how small Kuala Lumpur parking spaces are. It would be much more convenient for beginners to park. The exterior is absolutely full marks! The LED taillights are super eye-catching at night, and the daytime running lights make me stand out in the Klang Valley's rainy traffic. Many friends have said this design looks much younger compared to the older Proton models, and it turns heads when out on the road. Overall, as an electric car priced at over RM50k, the value for money is truly outstanding!

As the owner of the 2025 Proton e.Mas 5 Premium, having driven it in Malaysia for almost three months, I truly feel I made the right choice with this car! First, let's talk about the exterior. I chose the metallic silver color, and every time I park it in front of a Lotus mall, it turns heads. The body lines are very sleek, and the LED headlights and taillights are especially recognizable when lit up at night. Driving on Jalan Ampang in KL, my friends often say, "Your car looks way more expensive than its actual price!" When it comes to safety, I must give it full marks! Last week, while reversing in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, the 360-degree camera helped me avoid a motorcycle that suddenly appeared. A few days ago, while using ACC on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked, and the automatic emergency braking system immediately activated. It gave me quite a fright but saved my bumper. With 6 airbags and lane departure warning, my wife sitting in the backseat felt at ease even during a family trip to Genting Highlands. As for performance, it is entirely sufficient for city driving. The 0-100km/h acceleration of 5.9 seconds easily leaves Myvis behind at green lights. However, when climbing the steep slopes of Cameron Highlands, the power feels a bit weak, and stepping hard on the accelerator has a slight delay in response. But as an EV for daily commutes, the 325km range is totally adequate in Malaysia. It charges to 80% in just 35 minutes of fast charging, so going on a trip to Johor Bahru isn't stressful. All in all, being able to get such a car for RM69,800 is truly great value for money!
