Nowadays, the competition in the C-Segment SUV market is increasingly fierce. Consumers are pursuing practicality for daily use while also valuing driving stability and safety features. The 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight, serving as the main entry-level model in the series, highlights its core selling points such as the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, EyeSight driver assistance system, and well-balanced spatial performance, aiming to distinguish itself in a highly homogeneous market with its "practicality + safety" label. This test drive focuses on evaluating the performance of its all-wheel-drive system on complex terrains, the daily practicality of its powertrain, and whether its safety features genuinely enhance driving convenience.

In terms of appearance, the 2023 Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight continues the family-style rugged design. The large trapezoidal front grille, featuring an internal black mesh structure, connects with chrome trim along the upper edge to the LED headlight set on both sides, giving it high recognition. The lines on the side of the body are straight, the roof is equipped with silver roof rails, and the lower part has 225/60 R17 tires paired with multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, which retain the off-road aura of an SUV. The rear design is simple, with horizontally arranged LED taillights, and the silver underbody guard at the lower section of the bumper echoes the front styling. The hidden exhaust layout underneath makes the rear appear more orderly.

Stepping into the cabin, the interior features black as the primary color. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and adorned with silver trim, which aligns with the quality expectations for vehicles in this price range. At the center of the dashboard is a touchscreen with a clear interface layout. It supports Bluetooth connectivity and basic entertainment features, and the operation is fairly smooth. The multi-function steering wheel is wrapped in leather, with physical buttons on the left side for adjusting volume and answering calls, while the right side houses controls for the EyeSight system. The buttons have a clear tactile response, making them easy to operate by touch. For the seating, the front features fabric seats with 8-way power adjustment, offering moderate support and wrapping effect, making long drives less fatiguing. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, and when folded down, the trunk space can expand from 520L to accommodate larger items, fulfilling diverse storage needs. In terms of space performance, the 2670mm wheelbase provides generous legroom in the rear. Passengers with a height of 175cm sitting in the rear will still have about two-fist space from their knees to the front seats, with sufficient headroom as well. For storage spaces, the front center armrest box is relatively spacious, the door pockets can hold water bottles and small items, and the rear central armrest is equipped with cup holders, showcasing high usability overall.

In terms of performance, the 2023 Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum power of 156PS/6000rpm and a peak torque of 207N·m/4000rpm, paired with a CVT continuously variable transmission. During daily driving, the power output at startup is smooth, and the acceleration process feels linear. The CVT transmission performs well in terms of smoothness, with almost imperceptible gear shifting jolts. When stepping hard on the accelerator, the engine speed gradually rises, and the power response is slightly delayed but sufficient for overtaking on city roads. When switched to Sport mode, the transmission holds higher RPMs, delivering more aggressive power output. However, due to the characteristics of the naturally aspirated engine, its high-speed acceleration ability is moderate. In terms of driving modes, in addition to the standard economy and sport modes, it also features an X-MODE off-road mode, which, when activated, optimizes throttle response and torque distribution to enhance the vehicle's traversing capability on muddy or slippery roads.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is a highlight. During driving, power distribution is always maintained across all four wheels, providing significantly better stability on wet roads or during high-speed cornering compared to two-wheel-drive models. The combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear double wishbone independent suspension is tuned for comfort. It effectively filters out small road bumps, and the suspension quickly rebounds over larger potholes without noticeable residual vibrations. The steering wheel provides moderate resistance with precise directionality and minimal play. It feels light for daily driving, but automatically becomes heavier at high speeds, boosting driving confidence.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.6L/100km. During actual test drives, city driving fuel consumption was around 8.5L/100km, while highway conditions reduced it to about 7L/100km, meeting the fuel economy expectations for SUVs in this class. In terms of safety features, the EyeSight system includes functions like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. During the test drive, when the car got too close to the vehicle ahead, the system promptly issued an alert and lightly braked, effectively enhancing driving safety. Additionally, seven airbags (including knee airbags), rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera provide comprehensive protection for daily driving.

In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle's sound insulation performance is commendable. At speeds below 60 km/h, tire and wind noise are well controlled. At speeds exceeding 80 km/h, wind noise slightly increases but does not interfere with normal conversations inside the cabin. The fabric seats offer decent breathability, ensuring no significant stuffiness during summer driving. The rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents, allowing for quick temperature adjustments and enhancing rear passenger comfort.

To summarize, the core advantages of the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight lie in its standard symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and EyeSight safety features, which stand out compared to the predominantly two-wheel-drive models in the same segment. While its space performance is average among competitors, the stability and off-road capability provided by the all-wheel-drive system are definite highlights. This car is suitable for family users who prioritize driving safety and occasionally need to handle complex road conditions. It can handle daily commuting, weekend road trips, and light off-roading effortlessly. If you're on a budget but still want an all-wheel-drive system alongside comprehensive safety features, the 2023 Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight is a worthwhile choice to consider.

Owner of 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-S EyeSight
As the owner of the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-S EyeSight, having driven it for more than half a year, I feel quite satisfied overall. Speaking of performance, although the 10.3 seconds acceleration is not particularly fast, it’s sufficient for daily driving in Kuala Lumpur’s city traffic or weekend trips uphill to Genting Highlands. The CVT transmission is very smooth, and combined with the all-wheel drive, it feels super stable even on the LDP highway during rainy days. The fuel consumption is about 7.8L/100km, which is slightly more than the official 7.6L, but considering Malaysia's road conditions, it’s still quite fuel-efficient. As for the interior, the build quality is quite solid. The 8-way power-adjustable seats are comfortable, and they don’t make you feel tired on long journeys. The dual-zone air conditioning cools rapidly in Malaysia’s hot weather, and the rear air conditioning is very effective as well. My family sitting in the back all said it was cool. The infotainment screen is simple to operate, though it would be better if the screen size were a bit larger. The safety features are really excellent. With 7 airbags and the EyeSight system, there was one time on the Penang highway when I almost had a rear-end collision. The system braked automatically, giving me quite a scare but also a sense of reassurance. The reverse radar and camera are also very practical when looking for parking spaces. As for the exterior, the boxy design looks timeless, the LED headlights are bright enough at night, and the automatic headlights save the trouble of manual operation when entering tunnels, which is convenient. All in all, this car is very suitable for use in Malaysia. It is well-rounded in all aspects, with no significant shortcomings, and is ideal for family use.

Owner of 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight
As the owner of the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I would rate both the interior and exterior a 4 out of 5. Overall, I’m quite satisfied! Starting with the exterior, the boxy design is very appealing and doesn’t have the flashy look of some other SUVs. The large front grille paired with the Subaru emblem gives it a high level of recognition, and the LED headlights are bright enough for rainy days in KL. The body lines are bold and sharp, and with its 220mm ground clearance, I don’t worry about scraping the undercarriage when driving on Cameron Highlands mountain roads or over potholes on weekend trips to the East Coast beaches. It’s very suitable for Malaysia’s diverse road conditions. However, if a larger wheel option were available, it would look even more imposing. As for the interior, the materials are solid, with most of the dashboard wrapped in soft-touch materials, which feel great. The 8-way power-adjustable seat is very user-friendly for someone like me who drives an hour to and from work every day, as adjusting the seating position helps reduce fatigue significantly. The dual-zone automatic climate control system is absolutely essential in Malaysia’s hot weather, and with rear air vents as well, family members sitting in the back won’t complain about the heat. However, the response time of the central control screen could be faster—sometimes it takes about a second to load after tapping, which slightly affects the experience. Overall, both aspects perform well and meet the expectations for this price range. If the details could be further optimized, it would be perfect!

Owner of 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite
As the owner of the 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, and overall, I'm quite satisfied with the experience! Let me start with the performance, which I rate 4 stars. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT transmission offers smooth daily commuting in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic. While it may not be exceptionally powerful on the highway for overtaking, the 156 horsepower is sufficient for Malaysia's highways. The full-time all-wheel-drive system is especially stable in rainy weather or on rough roads. For instance, when I drive to Genting or the East Coast for self-drive trips on weekends, it provides great confidence even on slippery surfaces. However, the acceleration isn't particularly fast, taking 10.3 seconds to go from 0-100 km/h. If you're looking for a strong pushback feeling, this car might feel underpowered, but it's completely adequate for family use. As for safety, I must give it 5 stars! With 7 airbags and the EyeSight driver-assist system (although the GT Lite doesn't have it, the basic safety features are already comprehensive), along with front and rear parking sensors and a reverse camera, it is incredibly helpful when navigating Malaysia's complex parking scenarios. Once, while reversing in a narrow alley in George Town, Penang, the sensors gave timely alerts and prevented a potential scrape. Additionally, the body structure is quite rigid, providing a solid driving experience that feels trustworthy. For the exterior, I give it 4 stars. The GT Lite version's sporty body kit is more attractive than the standard version. The LED headlights and daytime running lights give it a sharp look, and the body lines are quite rugged, in line with the SUV's positioning. However, as it's an older model, the front design might feel a bit conservative compared to newer models. That said, it's one of those designs that grows on you over time and becomes more likable. In summary, this car performs very well under Malaysian road conditions, with excellent safety features. It's highly suitable for family use, and I recommend it to those who prioritize practicality and safety!

Owner of 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0i-P
As the owner of a 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0i-P, after driving it in Malaysia for the past few years, the safety features are what give me the most peace of mind! The 7 airbags (even including a knee airbag), vehicle stability control, and hill-start assist are all standard. The other day, while driving on the LDP highway in Kuala Lumpur during a rainy day, I encountered a car suddenly changing lanes, but the car stayed steady without skidding. I really have to give credit to this safety system. When driving with my family on the mountain roads of the East Coast, the AWD four-wheel drive system combined with the solid chassis ensures stable cornering and climbing, with no worries about rollover issues at all. As for the exterior, it’s exactly to my taste! The boxy contour is particularly practical for parking in Malaysian residential areas, unlike those sleek SUVs that are harder to park. The LED headlights are especially bright on the rural roads in Sabah at night, and the automatic headlights switch modes automatically when entering a tunnel, requiring no manual adjustment. The silver-gray body is resistant to dirt, so even after driving around Klang Valley for a few days without washing, it doesn’t look overly dirty. The roof rack can also hold a surfboard for trips to the beach in Penang, maximizing practicality! The overall design is understated yet timeless, and even after driving it for more than four years, I still find it very classic.

Owner of 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0i-P
As the owner of a 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0i-P, having driven it in Malaysia for over three years, the two aspects I want to talk about the most are its exterior design and safety features. Let’s talk about the exterior first. I would rate it 4 out of 5 because it’s not stunning, but it has a very timeless look — the boxy body paired with Subaru's signature hexagonal grille makes it look solid amidst the many streamlined sedans in Kuala Lumpur. Especially when driving on rural roads on the east coast, the high ground clearance along with the slightly rugged wheel arch design gives it extra confidence when tackling those bumpy palm oil plantation paths. However, if the wheel design could be a bit sportier, it would be perfect. For safety, it definitely deserves a full score! During the rainy season in Malaysia, sudden downpours often happen. One time, I encountered a flooded road section on the North-South Expressway, and the AWD system firmly gripped the road without any slipping. A while ago, I took my family to Cameron Highlands, and when descending the mountain with continuous curves and wet roads, the vehicle stability system reacted super quickly and corrected slight oversteering several times. The biggest comfort for me is the 7 airbags; last time, when a motorcycle sidescraped us in downtown Penang, it was only a minor incident, but seeing all the safety systems light up on the dashboard at that moment, I truly felt that the money spent was worth it.
