The C-segment performance car market has always been a battlefield for "pure driving enthusiasts" and the "daily practicality crowd," and the 2017 Subaru WRX 2.0 CVT tries to strike a balance between the two – it retains the performance genes of the WRX series while lowering the threshold for daily driving with a CVT transmission. The main goal of this test drive is to verify whether it can simultaneously offer the fun of weekend mountain driving as well as the practicality for weekday commuting, and whether its compromises compared to the more hardcore STI version are worthwhile.

From the exterior, the WRX 2.0 CVT continues the family-style sporty design, with compact and impactful overall lines. The hexagonal front grille paired with a honeycomb mesh, along with the two raised lines on the hood, clearly denote its performance identity; the sharp-shaped LED headlights on both sides are connected by a chrome trim on top of the grille, visually broadening the width. The character line along the side of the body extends from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 17-inch multi-spoke wheels and 235/45 R17 tires, giving it a stable posture. The sporty feel is further enhanced at the rear with the spoiler and dual exhausts. The LED taillights have high recognizability when lit, and the overall design is neither too ostentatious nor too understated, enough to make passersby instantly recognize it as more than an ordinary family sedan.

Sitting inside, the interior design leans towards practicality without excessive flamboyance. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented with silver trim, and the texture fits expectations for this price range. The 10-way electrically adjustable driver's seat comes with memory function and offers good support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The front passenger seat is 4-way manually adjustable, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold, providing decent flexibility. The screen in the center console is of moderate size with a simple operational logic, though its smoothness is just average. The multifunction steering wheel comes with paddle shifters, offers a solid grip, and has well-laid-out buttons for easy access to commonly used functions. In terms of features, it comes equipped with keyless entry, push-button start, single-zone automatic air conditioning, and rain-sensing wipers, basic but adequate for daily use. On the safety front, it is equipped with seven airbags, vehicle stability control, and hill-start assist, ensuring a solid sense of security.

Space performance meets the standards of C-segment cars: the 2650mm wheelbase provides ample rear legroom, with 175cm passengers enjoying two-fist legroom space, and the headroom does not feel restrictive. The 460L trunk capacity can easily fit two suitcases, and with the rear seats folded down, the storage capacity expands to meet the needs of short family trips. The rear seats are equipped with air conditioning vents and power outlets, reflecting attention to passenger comfort in detail.

The dynamic aspect is the core highlight of the WRX 2.0 CVT. It is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine with a maximum output of 268PS and a maximum torque range of 2400-5200rpm, paired with a CVT transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, power delivery is quite linear, with brisk starts and smooth acceleration, without the shift shock typical of traditional automatic transmissions. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle responsiveness increases, and the revs are maintained above 2000rpm, offering a noticeable surge of power when the turbo kicks in. It has sufficient power reserve for overtaking with a deep press on the accelerator. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.2 seconds, placing it in the upper-middle range among performance cars in the same price bracket, which should meet the needs for occasional spirited driving in daily life without an issue.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal play and clear directionality, giving the driver enough confidence when cornering. The suspension setup, with a front MacPherson strut and rear double wishbone, is tuned on the firmer side. It doesn’t completely filter out road bumps but offers great support, effectively limiting body roll during cornering. Coupled with the all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle provides strong grip on the road, remaining stable even on wet roads. The braking performance is also commendable, with a linear brake pedal feel and even distribution of braking force. During emergency braking, the car maintains a stable posture. Noise control during daily driving is decent, with some tire and wind noise at high speeds, though it doesn't affect in-car conversation. The seats offer good wrapping and support, making long drives less tiring. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.5L/100km. During test drives, urban conditions yielded about 9-10L/100km, while highway conditions were around 7-8L/100km. This performance is reasonable for a 2.0T all-wheel-drive model.

Compared to the same series STI 2.5 MT, the WRX 2.0 CVT has slightly weaker power output, with acceleration being 1 second slower. However, the CVT transmission provides a smoother everyday driving experience and is nearly 60,000 MYR cheaper, offering better value for money. The two models have similar configurations, with the main differences being the STI's manual transmission, larger wheels, and dual-zone air conditioning. Compared to other performance cars in the same class, the WRX 2.0 CVT's all-wheel-drive system is a significant advantage. It performs more stably on wet roads and during cornering, offering greater practicality.

Overall, the 2017 Subaru WRX 2.0 CVT is a model that balances performance and practicality. It retains the sporty genes of the WRX series while lowering the barrier for daily driving with a CVT transmission and comfortable interior design. It's suitable for those who like performance cars but also need to meet daily family usage needs, such as young families or drivers seeking balanced performance. If you're looking for a performance car that delivers driving enjoyment on weekends and comfortable commuting during workdays, the WRX 2.0 CVT is a great choice.

Pros

All-wheel-drive system provides stability, offering strong grip on waterlogged roads during rainy seasons and reducing the risk of slipping
Powerful engine with quick acceleration, 2.5T/2.0T engine makes overtaking easy with plenty of pushback
Cons
The original suspension is too stiff, making rear passengers feel bumpy on rough roads.
The front bumper has sharp lines, making it prone to scratches on narrow roads and resulting in high touch-up costs.
The CVT transmission shows delays or roaring sounds during rapid acceleration, lacking smoothness.

Owner of 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT
As the owner of a 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT, having driven it for more than two years in Malaysia, let’s talk about the appearance first—giving it 4 points is really objective. The "aggressive vibe" of this car makes it highly recognizable on the streets, especially with that big spoiler and the 18-inch blacked-out wheels. Every time I park near KLCC, people always turn to look. But honestly, the stock design of the front bumper is a bit too sharp. Last time in the old streets of George Town, Penang, I scraped it against a corner, and the repaint cost a lot. If the lines were slightly rounded, it would be more suitable for the narrow roads here. Now, onto performance, also 4 points. The 2.5T turbocharged engine paired with a manual transmission makes overtaking on the North-South Highway incredibly thrilling—accelerating to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, pressing the gas pedal leaves nearby Myvi and Alza far behind. The all-wheel drive performs exceptionally well on wet Federal Highway roads during rainy days. Last time during a heavy downpour in Kuala Lumpur, while many cars skidded, I drove through the waterlogged roads without sliding at all. However, the drawbacks are obvious as well: the stock suspension is too stiff, making bumpy countryside roads on the East Coast quite uncomfortable for backseat passengers, who often complain about the bumps. If it could be slightly softened, it would be perfect.

Owner of 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT
As the owner of the 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT who has been driving in Malaysia for over three years, the aspect that gives me the most peace of mind is its safety performance—I must give it full marks! During Malaysia's rainy season, on highways like KL's LDP or Penang's coastal roads, which are often slippery and waterlogged, I've encountered several unexpected situations on rainy days—such as the car in front braking suddenly or a motorcycle darting out unexpectedly. This full-time all-wheel-drive system combined with the vehicle stability system reacts extremely fast, and the tires have outstanding grip. I've never experienced any fishtailing or loss of control. Moreover, with its 7 airbags, one time when I had a minor collision with a Myvi that suddenly changed lanes on Jalan Ampang, although the car wasn't damaged, the safety system immediately triggered a warning. At that moment, I felt the money spent was absolutely worth it. As for the exterior, I'll give it 4 out of 5 points. It’s actually sporty enough—with wide fenders, a large spoiler, and 18-inch wheels, it attracts a lot of attention when parked at the KLCC parking lot. However, maybe because I’ve been looking at it for too long, I feel the front design looks a bit too "aggressive." Sometimes when I’m meeting clients, I feel it’s a bit too flashy. If it were a little more understated, it would be perfect. But that said, as a performance car, this exterior design definitely aligns with its positioning. On weekends when I take it to Genting Highlands to drive through the mountain roads, this design really complements those routes, so overall, I'm still very satisfied.

Owner of 2017 Subaru WRX 2.0 CVT
As the owner of a 2017 Subaru WRX 2.0 CVT, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I sincerely feel this car was the right choice! First, let me compliment the exterior. That sporty front face and sleek body always turn heads when parked near KLCC. The red body shines particularly bright under the Southeast Asian sun, absolutely deserving a 5-star rating. As for the interior, I’m very satisfied. Although it’s not a luxury brand, the build quality is solid. The multifunction steering wheel and paddle shifters are convenient to use, and the seats offer good support, making long-distance drives not tiring. The center console layout is clear, the button feel is great, and there’s plenty of space. The rear seat can comfortably accommodate three friends for a trip to Genting Highlands without feeling cramped. The trunk can fit several suitcases without any issue, a definite 5-star experience. In terms of performance, the 2.0T turbocharged engine is powerful, making overtaking on Malaysia’s highways a breeze. The 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.2 seconds is indeed impressive. However, the CVT gearbox has a slight lag during rapid acceleration, not as direct as a manual transmission, and can feel a bit sluggish in Kuala Lumpur traffic jams at times. So, I’m deducting 1 point and giving it 4 stars. Overall, the WRX performs excellently on Malaysian roads. Whether for city commuting or weekend road trips to the East Coast, it handles everything with ease. Highly recommended!

Owner of 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT
As the owner of the 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT, I’ve been driving it for nearly five years, and I have to say, its safety and performance totally deserve a full score! Let’s talk about safety first. In Malaysia, we often encounter sudden heavy rain during the rainy season, and the highway surfaces can get as slippery as mirrors. There was one time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front of me suddenly braked hard, and I had to slam on the brakes – the ABS and vehicle stability system immediately kicked in. The car stayed incredibly stable without skidding at all, and it came to a stop right away. My wife and kids were in the back seat at the time, and thinking about it now still makes me nervous. If it weren’t for these safety features, I really can’t imagine what could have happened. When driving on mountain roads with inclines, the hill assist feature is super helpful too – no rollback during uphill starts, which is a lifesaver for manual transmission beginners. As for performance, there’s nothing more to say, it’s just amazing! The 2.5T turbo engine and 300 horsepower are no joke. Malaysia has a lot of mountain roads, especially the winding routes on the way to Genting Highlands. The WRX STI’s full-time all-wheel drive is simply a godsend – the grip during cornering is phenomenal, the steering is precise, and the 5.2-second 0-100 acceleration feels incredible when overtaking on the highway. Step on the gas, and you immediately feel the power push you back. Even though the fuel consumption is 8.5L, it’s totally worth it for this level of performance. In conclusion, whether it’s on highways, mountain roads, or in the city, the WRX STI makes me feel completely at ease, and its performance is absolutely thrilling. It’s really the perfect car for driving in Malaysia!

Owner of 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT
As the owner of a 2017 Subaru WRX STI 2.5 MT who has been driving it in Malaysia for over two years, I am overall quite satisfied! In terms of appearance, the classic sporty design has a very high recognition level in the traffic in KL, especially with that large spoiler. My friends say it looks like a "little rocket," but the car paint is a bit thin. Last time a small pebble chipped it when parked by the roadside, so deducting one point is fair. In terms of performance, the manual transmission paired with the all-wheel drive feels super thrilling when stepping on the accelerator to overtake on the North-South Expressway. It's steady even when cornering on rainy days, but it can be a bit tiring to use the clutch during traffic in the city. Overall, I’d give it 4 points. In terms of safety, with 7 airbags and a stability control system, it once helped me stabilize the car when avoiding a motorcycle that suddenly appeared on Penang's mountain road. However, the reverse camera only has a rear view and no 360-degree panoramic view. This might make new drivers feel a bit nervous, so I’d also give it 4 points.
