Tesla Model Y 2023 Review

The C-segment electric vehicle market has seen steady growth in local demand in recent years. Consumers are no longer solely focused on range but are placing greater emphasis on the balance between space practicality and smart features. The 2023 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive trims the competition in this segment with a starting price of RM 199,000. Its key selling points include an exceptionally large 2,158 liters of trunk space, standard advanced driving assistance across all models, and an official range of 430 km. These features cater perfectly to the core needs of family users. We managed to get our hands on the RWD version for a test drive, with the main goal being to evaluate its real-life performance in everyday commuting and family outings, and see if it matches its pricing and positioning.
The exterior of the Model Y RWD follows the family design language of Tesla, with smooth and streamlined lines devoid of excessive decorations. The front adopts a closed grille design, accompanied by sharp LED headlamps on both sides, ensuring high recognition. The headlights support automatic activation and daytime running light functions, which are convenient for daily use. On the side, the 4,750mm length combined with a wheelbase of 2,891mm offers a sleek side profile. The combination of 19-inch front tires (255/45R19) and 21-inch rear tires (275/35R21) not only ensures good grip but also enhances the visual appeal. At the rear, the full-width LED taillights are a signature feature of Tesla, offering high visibility when lit. The absence of a traditional exhaust under the rear bumper maintains the clean look of an electric vehicle.
Stepping inside the cabin, the Model Y RWD adopts a minimalist design, with the dashboard featuring almost no physical buttons, as all functionalities are integrated into a 15-inch touchscreen. The display is clear, and the operation is smooth, allowing easy access to frequently used features such as navigation, music, and air conditioning. In terms of materials, the dashboard and door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by accent trim in chrome, offering an overall quality finish that aligns with the C-segment positioning. The seats are wrapped in leather, and the front row is equipped with power adjustments. The cushions are somewhat firm but provide good support. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, expanding the trunk capacity from its regular state to 2,158 liters, which is more than sufficient for storing strollers and luggage. In terms of space, a passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the front row has a headroom of around a fist and two fingers. In the rear row, the legroom is about two fists, and the headroom is about one fist, ensuring that even three adults sitting together won't feel cramped. For features, the car comes standard with a HUD head-up display, digital instrument cluster, 220V power outlet, and eight airbags, providing comprehensive safety and convenience.
As for dynamic driving, the Model Y RWD is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers a maximum output of 194kW (264PS) and a maximum torque of 340N·m. According to the official performance specs, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. During daily commuting, the vehicle demonstrates quick off-the-mark responsiveness; a light press on the accelerator gives an evident push-back feel. Mid-to-high range acceleration (60-100km/h) remains sufficiently powerful, and overtaking does not require deep pressing of the pedal in advance. The steering is relatively light and precise, making it easy for even women drivers to handle. The chassis is fitted with a front control arm and a rear multi-link independent suspension, and its tuning is on the firmer side but still well-balanced and resilient. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly absorbs the vibrations without leaving noticeable aftershocks. On highways, the body stability is commendable without feeling shaky.
In terms of range and power consumption, we tested the car under mixed road conditions (30% urban + 70% highway), with a full-charge range achievement rate of about 85%—from the official 430km range to an actual range of around 365km. Power consumption is approximately 14kWh per 100km, and the difference from the official 12.7kWh is mainly due to the high speeds (110-120km/h) on highway sections. Regarding charging, using a Tesla Supercharger for fast charging, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%; using a home slow charger (7kW), it takes 8 hours to fully charge, making it suitable for overnight charging while parked.
The driving and riding comfort details are well executed. Tire and wind noise are well controlled, and conversations inside the car don't require raised voices even at a speed of 120km/h on the highway. The seats offer good support for long-duration rides without causing fatigue, and the rear row is equipped with independent air-conditioning vents and power outlets to cater to passengers' needs. The energy recovery system has two adjustable levels; when set to the highest level, releasing the accelerator pedal results in noticeable deceleration, approaching a single-pedal mode, which helps save a lot of energy.
In conclusion, the core advantages of the 2023 Model Y RWD version are very evident: at a price of RM 199,000, it is RM 47,000 cheaper than the Long Range AWD version yet retains most of the key features (such as the 15-inch large screen, HUD, and a comprehensive active safety system). Its 2158-liter trunk space and spacious rear seats fully meet the needs of family users. With an acceleration of 6.9 seconds and a solid chassis, it strikes a balance between driving enjoyment and stability in daily usage. Compared with peers like the BYD Atto 3 or Hyundai Kona Electric, the Model Y RWD version has advantages in terms of space and brand recognition. Although its price is slightly higher, its features and range offer a more balanced performance.
This car is suitable for users who value space practicality and need a vehicle that combines family travel and daily commuting, especially those who have certain expectations for smart features and brand reputation. If the budget is limited but you still want to experience Tesla's technological and driving performance, the Model Y RWD version would be a great choice. Overall, it is a well-balanced C-segment electric vehicle with no obvious shortcomings and can cover most family usage scenarios.
